The Japanese force on Attu was facing obliteration. A banzai counterattack during the night caught the Americans literally asleep. Hearing the gunfire, the divisional engineer battalion set up a hasty defensive line in the dark. Cooks and drivers, signalmen and quartermasters, grabbed any weapon handy and prepared to make their stand.
