Although desperate to buy time to allow the 45th Division to be ferried across the Volga at night, the Russians had no more reserves. During the 27th, the shattered 118th Rifle Regiment had a bit of luck. To their surprise, they recovered three tanks from the front lines, one with a functional flamethrower. Anxious to buy time and spread their newfound joy, the Russians threw together these tanks and sent this hastily formed armored reserve to counterattack. Supported by artillery and katyusha batteries, the Russians launched their attack in the pre-dawn twilight. . .

Oh joy? Oh misery! I'm not a fan of Stalingrad scenarios and didn't enjoy this one, although this may have been influenced by appalling luck early on (sniper hits my dummy stack, 4+3 shot rolls snakeyes against my best units and they all break, PzkwIII malf's MA on first shot). All credit to my opponent though, putting his 10-3 leader to direct a successful DI shot with the ATR against a StuG (of course, the crew bailed out and were shot dead doing so) and then getting the FT tank round to the rear of my units to cause more havoc. After a failed CC attempt against this tank on my turn 3, I conceded as the Russians had already achieved their VCs.

AFV Flamethrower was Eliminated on first attempt to fire it. 10-3 assisted the 458 & MMG to their deaths through 12 FP Minefield. Germans turned it into a classic counter attack immediately and it quickly unraveled for the Russians.

For me this was all about the FT tank. It destroyed everything that came up against it. Would have been completely different with one DR >=10...

LV hindrance, a Commissar and patience helped the Russians who lost their tanks but were tough as ever in CC and got a hard-fought win. Fun to play a small-scale scenario on the RB board; those big hexes are stack friendly.

The low visibility hindrance made moving in the open a little more palatable. However, most of the troops were walking wounded and were not going very far very fast. The commisar was not too friendly, providing 3 CVP to the Germans. There was a close call with the sniper moving right next to my 10-3. Mines did not do much the whole game. The 37L HT was recalled by a sniper, denying me the VP as I could not destroy it. I did close combat a stug early on. The 10-3 stack was formidable on attack and defense (and was a constant CC threat). I was over on Turn 4 as most infantry was mopped up and the FT tank was going to go tank hunting.
