The success of Operation Bagration allowed a number of Russian units, including the Soviet 3rd Tank Corps, to make deep penetrations through the German lines. On July 31, the German 9th Army believed it was in position to cut off and destroy the Soviet 3rd Tank Corps near Wolomin. The Hermann Göring Division, en route from Italy, would play a significant role in the counter-offensive. Their task was to break through and join with the 4th Panzer Division to complete the encirclement. . .

Russians were lucky early on by knocking out a few German AFV. Although my Infantry got thrashed, I still felt confident with my reinforcements coming on ... this turned out to be my undoing. Being very brash & foolish, I full-on charged all AFV up close to try some intimidation techniques & was severely smacked around with multiple Wrecks leaving no question of the CVP advantage the Germans had for the win.

Russians have a bit of a tall order, as they need to protect a lot of territory and will need a fair bit of luck to knock out the German armor. I came on with my infantry fairly evenly divided between the north, middle, and south. But my primary armor focus was on the Board 44. With the Russians having little real anti-tank weaponry, I was able to overwhelm the few upfront defenders in the middle and the south with armor, while my infantry poured in to support my armor. One Russian tank in the south was knocked out trying to extricate itself, while the HMG nest and sole other Board 44 tank in the middle were soon VBM-frozen and overrun by infantry. It was well on its way to looking like an easy German victory so the Russians called it after two turns.

The Germans set up mostly in the south, attempting to avoid the Russian defenders, who were concentrated in the village. Unfortunately, the defending Russian AFVs made quick work of the German armour, leaving them with just three mobile tanks at the end of T4. Losing so many AFVs seems pretty much irrecoverable for the Germans in this scenario, since the tanks can no longer provide exit VPs and the remaining infantry force is not in a position to inflict dozens of casualty VPs against the incoming Russian reinforcements (all while still having to hurry across the map). I found this scenario a bit too 'heavy' for my enjoyment, as the high amount of AFVs on the battlefield makes for quite drawn-out turns.

Excellent game! Loads of toys for both sides and multiple ways to play it. The German AFV'S were hot and took out three T34s with crit hits, the Russian ATG responded with 3 kills but lost its supports and was taken out by tank mg fire. Game went down to last turn but Nick had preserved his tank force and a combination of Russian AFV losses and exiting Pz IV led to the VP total being reached. Really fun game :)

Things didn't bode too well for the Germans when a tank fell into the cellar early on. By the middle of Turn 4 they were down to two mobile AFVs while the Russians had only lost one. A strong contestation of the central woods saw almost every German squad trying to push its way through break. The Russians were slowly starting to bleed broken units of their own strewing the battlefield without any leaders to rally them but, with imminent Russian reinforcements coming, the Germans called it a day.

Furious action to the bitter end. Low German TK and ROF rolls were decisive.

With one broken squad left of the original Russian force, and only 2 T-34's left, the Germans had it wrapped up before anyone even exited. The one remaining German tank was gravy.

Russian up front defense with two of the T34s in woods hexes caught JVan by surprise and they each got kills and prevented the German Mark IVs from finding their groove. By the end of German turn 4, the Germans were down to one mobile AFV and two others immobilized in poor positions. Although the German infantry was pushing hard into the main village and was pounding the Soviets, JVan conceded as 100 CVP was out of reach.
I really like the forces in this battle as both sides are loaded and it's some interesting terrain. It's too bad the German armor fell so quickly or it would have been a fun end game. I just kept rolling turret hits and the TK rolls were 90% successful. Would definitely replay.
