The Japanese offensive against the Dutch East Indies was designed to gain control of the rubber and oil production facilities found on the many scattered islands in the region. The Dutch defense on Tarakan Island was organized by “Fronts” protecting the port area, the airfield, and the main oil wells at Pamoesian on the east side of Tarakan city. This area contained a series of built up strongpoints, centered around automatic weapons in concrete bunkers. The Japanese landed early on the 11th on the east coast of the island and aggressively pushed inland. By mid-morning, they had heavily engaged the line of strongpoints. . .

Game decided by last turn CC. My Japanese had to roll 8 to win - I rolled a 9

The first shot of the game malfed the dutch HMG. It was instantly repaired but prep fire disrupted the Dutch 8-1 and destroyed the squad (ELR/CR). A green squad grabs the HMG and immediately jams it again. This time permanently. I broke the other Dutch leader on turn 3 who never rallied but I could not get any other result better than a pin. My 9-1 was mortally wounded on a 1MC. Needed to win 3 CC on the last turn. Could only win 1 (both of the others managed a CR but Dutch managed a kill)

Dutch employed a good rear defence to keep the hill swept of Japanese and deny them any TEM on the final rush. Japanese dedicated MMG+MTR vs each Dutch MMG/HMG which partly worked to suppress them. No Banzai charges, but rush to the hill from all sides then steady closing in with few losses, and simultaneous advance onto about half a dozen lvl 2 hills. Dutch MMG+HMG had a few lucky KIA shots, but were eventually suppressed by small arms DF or SMOKE, and finished off by CC against Pillboxes. A close run thing, it wasn't decided until the CCPh of the final turn.

Think this was my second time playing the Japanese. Dutch deployed most units further back and waited with defenses centered on the single level 2 hill. Managed to get squads around the back of the bunkers. Japanese leaders kept troops motivated. Once Japanese close in things get tough for the Dutch. Good scenario. 2.5 hours

Seems evenly balanced, did a reverse slope defence and conceded on the second to last player turn when it became apparent the Japanese had effectively secured the hill.

The outcome of this Banzai charge tutorial depends on how often the Dutch MGs get ROF. In this case, not enough. Banzai charges carried the trenches on the front side of the hill. All leaders on both sides were gone by the end of GT3. With the Japanese in trenches, Dutch fire was ineffective. The Dutch that routed off the hill couldn't get back on it and the last two trenches fell to the Japanese in HtH CC.

Hard to gauge this scenario as this one was over in 3 with probably the most extreme diceyness I've ever seen.

We chose this scenario from a list that Matt had. The list contained ROAR scenarios having more than 100 playings and play balance near 50%. Since I needed to eat lunch with my wife, Matt took the defending Dutch. He had an hour to construct an excellent, mostly reverse slope style, defence. The swamp and marsh hexes channelled the Japanese attack and Matt took advantage of that. I perhaps should have banzai’d some of his defenders early on, because I ended up running out of time. Losing the best Japanese leader, breaking an LMG, and breaking both MMG on their first shot, did not help either. We kept playing a while past necessary, but there was no way to take the last level 2 hex with the time remaining because of the Dutch occupied trench and pillbox fortifications.

Fun Scenario. Hard to stop the banzai waves and Bruno's moves were spot on.

My first PTO scenario, and Mark was an excellent teacher. Went down to the very last CC roll of the dice. Very exciting.

Starting to get the hang of the Japanese - lots of smoke and hang back with the DC to force FPF that he *must* use. Lost a lot of guys to Dutch mg's though.
