Overview:
The very first scenario for the original Squad Leader. 25 years later this all infantry affair is just as challenging as it was when it first appeared. A must play for grognards and newbies alike.. . ."After an extremely successful summer campaign, the Germans came upon the Volga fortress of Stalingrad. Here the Red Army had dug in and was determined to make a stand. Sensing total victory, the Germans threw more and ever more troops into the fighting. But for the first time in the war, German infantry found the Russians their equal. Rebuffed by stiff resistance, the Germans committed crack assault engineers. Gradually, the Germans cleared one block, then another—only to lose them again to sudden Russian counterattacks. By October 5, the Germans had almost taken the key Dzerhezinsky Tractor Works. However, the fighting had been so heavy that the line troops occupying the surrounding area were exceptionally weak from the previous week’s combat. At that point, the Russians counterattacked with their crack 37th Guards to break the ring the Germans had thrown around the factory and reinforce the desperate defenders."Attacker: Russian (308th Rifle Division / 2nd Battalion, 37th Guards Division)
Defender: German (Company H, 389th Infantry Regiment)

2023-12-16 | (A) Dave Mareske | vs | Robert Adams | Russian win | The Russian rolls were just good enough to break the German defenders with some good morale checks on the Russian side. The Germans tried to hold and repel the Russians in their left flank building and ended up getting surrounded and captured. Down 6.5 squads to the Russian 1, the Germans conceded on turn 3. Welcome Robert to the the KC ASL Club!
2023-11-25 | (A) Taneli Selin | vs | jotudin | German win | Second full scenario ever played against human opponent. First round took many hours but then it got much easier. Less mistakes rule-wise as on first time. Russians lost it after making desperate assaults on second-to-last turn.

2023-07-16 | (A) Vic Lauterbach | vs | Trevor S. | Russian win | Trevor and I ran ASL A as full ASL tutorial. Trevor has played other board wargames and had a good grasp of the ASL basic game rules. As "programmed instruction" ASL A worked well. By the end of the game, Trevor had mastered MG ROF, Fire Lanes, LOS and movement around multi-hex/multi-level buildings, CX, ELR, HoB, PoWs/RtPh surrender, snipers, low crawl, etc. We had plenty of ASL craziness. Three SMC were wounded and survived, one twice, and one was captured. I took F6, H7 and I7 then fought off late counterattacks on M2, N2, and N4! Trevor said he liked how the game created a 'narrative' which was very insightful. Every ASL scenario is a little drama!
2023-05-14 | (D) Yuqi Xiong | vs | Gregory | German win | A good tutorial scenario for sniper, human wave, dash, fire lane and commissar. Russians tried a dauntless human wave to cross street, but one single 2FP fire lane broke most of the 628s. The 10-2 leader and one last 628 were broken in the stone building and surrendered! In turn 1 my opponent conceded the game. If I were to play as Russian, I'll need better fire preparation before cautiously crossing the deadly street. Perhaps launching a human wave after capturing a first VP building is a better choice.

2022-12-07 | (A) Alvaro Radigales | vs | German | German win | Down to the last roll. A first successful human wave took the building at F5, killing all the Germans inside; I7, however, proved much tougher to crack – three of the charging squads made it inside, but were eliminated in close combat. On the rest of the map, frequent sniper activity kept both sides pinned down for much of the fight, killing two leaders and reducing a broken squad. In the end, the Russians did not manage to capture the second building on time, and failed keep a 3:1 superiority by the end of the game.
2022-10-14 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Adrian Benigno | German win | For Tanksgiving 2022
2022-06-17 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Jacques Buchanan | Russian win | Jacques is a new player, but he is quite good. His attack was deliberate and plodding and we saw it all. His sniper took my SAN down to 5. He had 3 squads (and a leader) go berserk. His commissar failed to shoot any of his own guys; however, he did direct some key attacks. His 10-2 ended up leading a successful Human Wave that saw my defensive shots at him do little (though I was aided by a sniper attack on him). In the end, he had 10.5 squad equivalents and I 3.5 squad equivalents, giving him exactly the 3:1 ratio needed. What a fantastic match!
2022-05-09 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Neumann, William | Russian win

2022-04-28 | (A) Alexey Kolleganov | vs | Fedor Melnikov | German win | As always, in suspense until the last move and the roll of dice
2022-04-15 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Cusick, John | Russian win
2022-02-26 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Peter Bartlett | Russian win | Peter's first-ever ASL game. I did a bit of coaching, but not a lot. He grasped the concepts quite well and by turn 3 had decimated the Germans. Even though it was full-rules, we went as though all buildings were single-level. As German, I didn't deploy my men, but I did coach him through capturing some POWs after his sniper reduced all my squads in the middle building to broken, DM squads. This was due to his sniper killing my leader there and left them essentially helpless.
2022-02-01 | (D) Frant Anderle | vs | Jim | Russian win
2022-01-25 | (A) Michal Kostan | vs | Polda | German win
2021-12-23 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Simon Taylor | Russian win (VASL Log) | A cruel game for the Germans who's 9-2 was wounded fatally by a sniper, then, when his replacement arrived, the sniper wounded & killed him, too. Each of the three squads failing their LLMCs, too, in both instances.
2021-12-04 | (D) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Vasiliou, Jim | German win
2021-11-03 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Bronson Banhart | Russian win | An unusually tame Turn 1, ending without a single unit lost (or even broken). Turn 2 not so much...with the Germans receiving a broken nose, and an eviction notice in building G6; the Russians able to gather a few prisoners to begin the deploying process. The next turn saw I7 fall to the Russian juggernaut. From there it was just a matter of consolidating and holding their gains. Always fun.
2021-10-08 | (A) Jason Wert | vs | Dan Stanhagen | German win | ASLOK 2021
2021-09-28 | (A) Noel Herradura | vs | Pierce Mason | German win | My very first game! Attempted to rush the western German building but was mowed down by MG fire. No one got through. The German sniper killed my Commissar early on, so my squads near him were not able to rally. Was eventually able to take the center building, but with many casualties. A few squads were able to storm the western building, but they were not able to get rid of the German squads hiding on the third floor by the end of turn 5. I had a great time and am looking forward to playing more games!
2021-05-19 | (A) Steve Smit | vs | Howard Jones | German win | A very fun game, played by PBEM with alot of humour. Close game. Russians lost after a desperate last turn mass assault.
2021-05-17 | (D) Howard Jones | vs | Steven Smith | German win | My first game in well over thirty years. Played by VASL and PBEM, Steve was a great opponent. The game threw every crazy twist it could, with quite a few potentially game-changing HOB results. Soviet Sniper had a field day. Soviets easily took the F5 building, not without plenty of HOB chaos - berserkers, fanatics... We laughed a lot and the game came down to the final turn, with practically every Soviet squad coming at the Germans from all sides, but ultimately unable to take the second necessary building. We both recommend this for returnees and newcomers to ASL: a small map, infantry only, and pretty basic LOS to work with. What a great way to return to ASL, thank you Steven for being a fun, patient, considerate and graceful opponent.
2021-05-10 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Martin Barker | German win (VASL Log) | Started off ok, but a big swing of fortunes in the middle left the Germans with barely an unbroken squad. As featured on episode 45 of Illuminating Rounds.
2021-04-01 | (D) Steve Smit | vs | Chris | Russian win | First game in 30 years complete. Chris got his forces across into the first building in the first turn and never looked back. The war of annihilation had begun. I forgot what a hard master the dice could be and how quickly your best intentions can be dashed. Half my leaders taken out by snipers in the Russian first turn did bode well. Enjoyable game, played well by Chris. Glad to be back. Lots to learn.
2021-03-13 | (A) James Forrest | vs | In progress
2021-03-09 | (D) Lee Hyde | vs | Grant Hewitt | German win | First time of trying this classic, since SL days. Snipers were so active first off, with the German Sniper taking out the 10-2 Russian Leader, and disrupting the Elite Guards, which delayed their rush for the first building. The Commissar met his end with a risky BP attempt, and the Russians struggled with an ever increasing Brokie count. That said, one Eussian unit BH to fanatic and a Hero generated made a good effort at leading a charge for the centre building. Only a wounded Hero made it, but killed a German Leader in CC, before succumbing to weight of numbers. Hard fought, and next the Tractor Works.
2021-03-09 | (A) Grant Hewitt | vs | Lee Hyde | German win | This was my second game of ASL after a 30+ year long hiatus. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though the german sniper broke a number of my elite squads and eliminated my 10-2 leader in the first turn - somewhat delaying my assault on building F6. My attack on building J5 from the eastern side of the board was halted when I lost my commissar to a rookie error, not noticing the LOS from the german MMG in K7; leaving me with only my 9-2 in hex J2. The germans consolidated their position around hexes H7, I7, K7 and K8 and I felt pressured into launching an attack from buildings J2, H3 and F6 into J5, which was now defended by mostly broken units. Alas, my assault stalled with many elite russian units being broken and/or casualty reduced under withering machine gun fire; and I only succeeded in entering J5 with a hero. In the last turn, I noticed that I could reach the now abandoned M9 from M5 using double time to bypass N5; but the hail mary failed under MG fire from K8. I thoroughly enjoyed the game against a patient opponent who has graciously accepted the task of showing me the ropes.
2021-02-22 | (A) Owen Edwards | vs | Russian win | My 4th game. Went down to the last half-turn, but the Russians were in a strong position from, really, turn 1, and definitely turn 3. Their first big Human Wave (of the Guards) swept the 1F5 building, and then on turns 2 and 3 the Soviets mopped up some broken Germans and then Human Waved again. The central building was the ultimate victory building, whilst German pressure on the southernmost building was stymied by very poor rallying. In the last turn they finally made a couple of breaks for it, as they'd finally broken the Soviets inside, but their Prep Fire hadn't broken enough overwatching Soviets in the central building, and it wasn't enough. The key stat is shown in losses, though: with no extra losses in Turn 5 on either side, the Germans had lost 7.5 squads, 2 x LMG, and 3 Leader, to 5.5 squads and the Commissar for the Soviets. The Germans couldn't buy a final K, even with big FGs. Not that the rolls were wildly divergent - but it was definitely a factor with all the stone buildings.

2020-10-28 | (A) Stephen Solomon | vs | Chris (Graff) | Russian win | I’m returning from a 25 year break and Chris is newish, so we muddled through a lot of questions while having a good time regardless. With some lucky dice, my Russians were into Bldg F5 at the end of turn 1, with only the German leader, and two broken squads in a melee. By the end of turn 2, brutal prep/opp fire whittled the Germans down to the bone. Germans never really recovered and conceded early. I wonder if a key to the defense, is holding Bldg F5 for as long as possible to run out the clock. Attacking, I couldn’t get any results from the north or east edges of the boards and clearly I need to figure out how to use a Commissar.
2020-10-05 | (D) Michael Rodgers | vs | John Otromke | German win | Russian player was a returning fellow playing at beginner level. Russians also had the sniper take out two of the leaders.

2020-07-10 | (A) Markku Heikkilä | vs | Russian win
2020-06-20 | (A) John Smith | vs | Scott | Russian win | The Guards Counterattack always ends close, not exception here. The Russians managed to capture three buildings, building F6 being the first to fall..as it usually does. But due to a dumb Russian mistake (me) and the Germans cleverly breaking voluntarily to rout into an upper story building to avoid CC...I manage to capture 2 by pushing my 10-2 and some guard squads to I7 to take it on my last Russian turn in CC. I missed the center building due to clever German routing. Not a whole lot happened in the east, every time I probed across any rode I ended up broken or KIA and had to retreat. So we just traded lead for 5 turns on that side of the board. A last turn blitz by the Germans to try and take back a stone building came up short...and bloody. The Germans were hampered early when my Russian sniper when on an absolute tear and took out three German officers (two in one phase alone). I named him Sgt. Deadeye
2020-06-12 | (D) David Stoffey | vs | Eric Duckworth | German win
2020-06-03 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Ethan Delwood | German win | Like in my previous game, my opponent was very aggressive in his opening moves. Unlike last game however, the dice were with me this time. He managed to knock me completely out of the western building led by his 10-2, but at a fairly steep cost in lost and broken men. I also managed to hold fairly tight in the middle, and busted his MMG squad and leader in J2. Things got worse for him on Turn 2 when I managed to evict him and retake the west, and even managed to reinforce the middle with a squad. His assault in the east was almost completely busted up, and his commissar didn't prove any inspiration to his men. It was all but over at this point, but he played on. Turn 3 saw him make another aggressive push, and the results were bloody indeed. We played one more Russian turn after that, but there were almost no Good Order units left on that side.
2020-05-21 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Magnus Rimvall | Russian win | Magnus was very aggressive with his opening moves, and it paid off. He got a strong foothold in the westernmost building on his first turn, preventing me from sending any reinforcements that way. It didn't help that my 8-1 leading the machine gun nest in L7 got sniped. Meanwhile he advanced into the street for his push on the central building. Turn 2 saw him consolidate his gains in both buildings. What men I had left were either encircled or soon-to-be. When he busted both squads in I7 I saw the writing on the wall and conceded. Probably the shortest game by far I've ever played of this.
2020-04-11 | (D) David Ford | vs | James Fardette | Russian win | My Germans were overwhelmed by superior numbers, and superior play by Jim. Snipers and berserkers spelled the end for the Germans. By the end of Turn 4 the Russians had enough buildings to win and the Germans did not have enough force left to recapture any.
2020-04-03 | (A) Gordon Jupp | vs | Simon Church | German win | Lost a leader to German Sniper on my first Prep fire shot :( took one building, couldn't get a 2nd, last desperate HW failed miserably....

2020-02-06 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Dan Portelli | German win | This was Dan's first ever ASL match. He's no stranger to gaming, however, and he played well. Soon I had to stop giving him tactical tips. We saw everything: heroes, snipers, battle hardening, berserk! He really liked using his firelanes on me. In the end, the building in the middle failed to fall to me. He had a broken, DM HS floundering in the corner and I couldn't kill, even though it did used to be a full squad. Great match!

2019-07-02 | (A) M T | vs | Russian win | My first game with the full ASL rules. I got in a great sniper shot, which combined with a 628 rush shattered the Germans on their left flank.

2019-04-13 | (A) Vic Lauterbach | vs | BL | German win | Multiple ties on K/# results decimated the Russian human wave and their attack collapsed. Still a classic scenario though that teaches all the basics of the system including that the dice can be cruel!

2019-01-10 | (A) David Garvin | vs | David Damrel | Russian win | This was his first match ever. In spite of this, he did well and really liked the experience. Hope to play again.
2018-11-11 | (A) Andy Goldin | vs | Stephen Worrel | German win | I cleared building F5 with my Guards in short order. At the end of Turn 2 casualties were about even (three squads of mine lost, two of his and a leader). My sniper got some nice hits, killing a leader of his and breaking squads here and there, but he managed to move up his HMG, which succeeded at breaking up my Guards as they were preparing to attack I7/K5. The time required to reform the attack left me with little time to attack by fire. My MMG wasn't effective so my men went into the street against German rifles and machine guns, with predictable results. A quick and deadly scenario.

2018-05-02 | (A) Jeff B | vs | John Malaska | German win | A hot sniper early for the Germans set the Russians back at least a turn, and that was just enough. I thought I had him cornered on the 2nd level of F6 on the last turn but I made the mistake of leaving G6 uncovered and he was able to sneak away. He reminded me of the 3:1 ratio though and, having finally busted his kill stack in I7 to a man, I needed to connect on an 8+3 to break one squad in M7. Didn't happen. Great game and opponent.
2018-05-02 | (D) John Malaska | vs | Jeff Buser | German win | My return to ASL. Squeaked out the win, but Jeff was forgiving when I made goofs.
2018-04-20 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Scott Holst | Russian win | My sniper was the deciding factor, killing 2 of his leaders on the first two turns. As always, a fun match!
2018-04-19 | (D) Louis Langdeau | vs | Lee M | Russian win | Didn't complete the game, but with the way things were going it almost certainly would have gone to the Russians. My first game of full ASL! Lee did a great job teaching, and effectively took apart my defenses. He seemed to take a fairly aggressive route through my forces. He drew fire where he could, and then exploited holes that developed in my firing lanes. Great fun all around, and excited to get my next game in.
2018-04-11 | (A) Dave Mareske | vs | Greg Wegst | Russian win
2018-02-10 | (D) Stephen dedier | vs | wilde, guy | German win | Nice throwback scenario. We did this to get guy back into playing live after a long layoff. Classic infantry slugfest. Germans managed some good shots and took 2 buildings from the Russians and the Russians did the same but lost too many troops in the effort. Good way to get back into street fighting.

2017-12-21 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Taylor, Greg | Russian win
2017-11-21 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Roberto Alesse | Russian win | Russians had some early luck in the shot tradeoffs, though they did lose the 9-1 to a HoB disruption in the very first DFPh. The MMG-manning squad was soon to follow, but they were able to sneak over a few squads from the N building when the tough-to-hold J/K building's Germans all were busted early. The F building's Germans tried to hide in the upper levels, but they all were either forced to surrender due to encirclement or died in CC. The I building's guards then fled to the safety of the L building, leaving their building the next to fall. By this time the Russians had satisfied both parts of the VC so they just hunkered down and waited for the German counterattack which never materialized.
2017-10-18 | (A) LOUIS PADOL | vs | Garry Kaluzny | Russian win | Hot dice nearly melted the cup! Garry conceded after Turn 3. Fun slug-fest.

2016-12-23 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Andrew Goldin | German win | Great match via VASL. Came to the final roll of the dice for the win for Germany
2016-12-22 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Cole Peterson | German win | Came down to his 10-2 failing a NMC and taking his stack with him. Otherwise, the Soviet would have won the game outright.
2016-12-07 | (D) James Woodall | vs | David Douglas | Russian win | That's a hell of a lot of Russians!
2016-12-06 | (D) Itinerant Hobbyist | vs | Jim Burris | Russian win | Russians got into the bottom right building because I didn't take a shot at them as they rushed through an open spot. Not sure why I didn't shoot. Jim was very easy on me as this was only my second ever full ASL game.
2016-11-18 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Ross Earnheart | Russian win
2016-11-12 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Ross Earnheart | German win | I will never get sick of playing this scenario. A nail biter to the very end. German east flank was in imminent danger of collapse, only to have the 9-2 and company swoop to the rescue. Once those boys were whipped back into shape he had to return to his south central stone building to hold off the encroaching guards who, had they not been leaderless since turn 1 (casualty to no quarter surrender), would've probably proved too much to handle.

2015-08-20 | (D) JP Laurio | vs | Ron | German win
2015-08-10 | (D) Alberto Griffa | vs | Mike Johnston | Russian win
2015-07-21 | (A) Shane Pask | vs | German win | I started well and quickly captured two buildings to the east. A flanking attack to the west was broken up, however. I noticed a potential counterattack by the Germans but was mauled when trying to cover it. I managed to advance reserves to cover the German dash and managed to break up the move but one squad still reached J2 to claim victory.
2015-05-31 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Andrew Luden | German win

2014-12-03 | (A) leo zhu | vs | Erwin Lau | German win | It's the second time we played with scenario A.Erwin is a ASL master who teach me how to use HW. The progress is full of fun and surprise. Finally, Rus give up for lost too many units.

2013-12-22 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Giorgio Winter | German win | It came down to the final CC roll of the game.
2013-10-22 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Terry Johnson | Russian win | The Russians actually sneaked out a victory on the Germans' last turn by eliminating the pile of brokies who had taken refuge on the 2nd floor of the middle building.
2013-09-01 | (A) Juan Garrido | vs | Solo | German win
2013-07-21 | (A) Arnie Felix | vs | Jeff Buser | German win | Significant number of bad dice rolls sealed the Russian Guard's fate. Russian Sniper was the biggest casualty producer for the Germans.
2013-07-21 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Arnie Felix | German win
2013-06-25 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Craig Kennedy | Russian win | Always fun to go back to the basics.
2013-05-23 | (D) Russell Dewhurst | vs | Jeremy B | Russian win
2013-04-30 | (D) Jonathan Davis | vs | Scott Eichelberger | German win | Much closer than last weeks game. Russians used sewer movement well Turn 1 and poorly Turn 3. We ran out of time, and Scott had already failed his PMC after a rough turn and so he conceded.
2013-04-23 | (A) Jonathan Davis | vs | Scott Eichelberger | German win | Russians human waved turn 1. Germans rolled tons of 3s, 4s, and 5s, and scored 4 big snipers on Russian Turn 1. The devastation was too great to come back from.
2013-02-28 | (A) Juhani Bonsdorff | vs | Russian win
2013-02-22 | (D) Zac Belado | vs | Dan Lepore | German win | Fun scenario that had a lot more to do for the Germans than I expected
2012-11-05 | (A) Russell Dewhurst | vs | [Solo] | Draw | Solo to practise building rules. Very close, Russians eventually took J5 but were hampered by lots of German leader battle hardening and heroes in CC, but on the last turn, a total wipeout in CC left the crucial I7 building with the Russians and the Germans couldn't get through the Defensive Fire to take it back.
2012-07-27 | (A) Michal Kostan | vs | [solo] | German win
2012-07-24 | (A) Ian Willey | vs | James Short | Russian win | What needs to be said about this classic? Jame was hurt before he in turn could mount an attack of his own. Good game.
2012-07-12 | (A) Michal Kostan | vs | [solo] | Russian win | Noob German setup made it relatively easy for the Russians.
2012-05-22 | (A) Richard Carter | vs | Tom Halliday | German win | Came down to one wounded leader w/ lmg holding on to middle building, surviving a 24 +3 fp attack. I had taken 2 buildings and then lost one in last turn. Great scenario.
2012-04-30 | (A) Brent Paschall | vs | Brederic | Russian win | My first ASL scenario, played against myself. The Germans made a desperate run for a lightly guarded building behind the front lines to try to win the game on their last turn. Only a leader made it inside, and he was ambushed and killed. I got to use: dash, assault fire, concealment, ambush, bypass, heat of battle, berserk, sniper, elr reduction, rof, 1st level of buildings. Things I didn't see: battle hardening, leader or hero creation, surrender/capture, fire lanes, human wave, snap shot and probably many others.
2011-12-21 | (D) Jeff Coleman | vs | Are Erlandsen | German win | close game,always fun to play a Classic

2011-08-29 | (A) Robbie Nye | vs | In progress
2011-06-04 | (A) Ian Willey | vs | Carl N | Russian win | Very close. German's heald on to all buildings till the last turn. He nearly retook in his final turn but failed to win the CC. Great fun
2011-01-31 | (A) Oliver Schumacher | vs | Michi | German win | Came down to a very close German win in the final Player Turn. The Russian almost won due to German failures to rout, but the German managed to rally one single Leader thus avoiding losing the building.
