On the morning of September 5th, the 48th Highlanders attempted to seize an opportunity to capture the ridge at Coriano. The operation was placed in jeopardy by the risk of an open left flank, and forward progress was halted until reinforcements could be brought up. By then, German soldiers found their footing on the ridge, causing heavy casualties from the attempt to capture Coriano on the fly.
