As part of the general attack aimed at the Karelian capital of Petrozavodsk, the Finnish 11th Division was ordered to take the village of Prääzä, an important road junction over which the two sides had been fighting for a while. The division devised a three-pronged attack: Infantry Regiment 50 would outflank the Soviets from the north while Infantry Regiment 8 was sent on a southern route. Meanwhile, to keep the Soviets busy while both flanking units got into position, Infantry Regiment 20 would attack Prääzä along the road from the west. On 7 September the attack of Infantry Regiment 29 stalled in the front of the forested ridge of Niiniselkä, which the Soviets had fortified with pillboxes, trenches, and prepared fire zones. A second attack was planned for 8 September. This time, plentiful mortar support was available, including a smoke mortar platoon from the Corps reserve.
Use Finnish balance. Fins pushed in quickly with OBA helping tremendously. Flames, Blazes spread over lower portions of the hill steadily every turn making things interesting. Fins did well and took a few Prisoners which eventually turned on the Guards causing headaches at the end game. All came down to last Pillbox, but Fins could not eliminate units outside in time to also attack & occupy the Pillbox in last turn.

As the Finns, I made some poor early moves and suffered accordingly, but then my ARTY managed to fix Dan's Russians in place as I moved from one end to the other to take out the pill boxes. I managed to secure the final pill box in my Turn 8 Close Combat. Dan's final counter-attack to retake a pill box failed and the Finns had the win.

Russian setup was poor and defense too weak for the first half of the scenario. Managed to pull it off by sleazing my way to defend the last pillbox. A loooong and rule-check intensive play made better by VASL and 2 - 3 hour sessions. Pillboxes can be difficult. Defense is quite boring at first but the last few turns were fun for Russians too.

Pill boxes and prep fire zones placed badly by russians. Finnish advance took no fire from machine guns.

Took the balance in favour of the Finns: no Soviet Wire. In the end, I was able to hit both flanking bunkers as my artillery pounded the central position, essentially fixing them there.
I lifted the fire and moved in for the kill from their rear. I got into CC as often as possible, often at overwhelming odds

Finnish balance and Russians still won. Pillboxes at opposite ends of the ridge and one in the middle; the Finns concentrated too hard on the left flank and couldn't get enough guys to the right bunker before they ran out of time.
Starting to suspect this might be unbalanced.

pill boxes on right of hill and centre... placed the prep fire zones ro provide clear los from first hill crest line on left and had the 3 HIP mmc on the right.. results were fins pushed into the centre where they took a while to get over the wire... tight game which came down to several combats at the end when finnish mmc failed several; times to assault Russian mmc in 2 pillboxes... the arty mainly just stopped Russians moving about and kept them in the trenches...

Wild game. Had two shots at the CC for the final Pillbox, including one ambush but couldnt put the HMG toting Russians away. Those boys had my hatred after having KIA'd 5 squads and the 9-1 throughout the game. Fun scenario.

Russian win in final CC of last Finnish 1/2 Turn. I got the Ambush on him but failed to roll low enough to kill him. He retained Control of the final pillbox for the win. About the only 'unfun' part of the scenario was the dreadfully dark crest line changes on the board 39 hill. Still a blast.
