Overview:
During the initial invasion of Sicily, many American parachute units were given the task of blocking German movement towards the landing beaches. One such, the 3rd Battalion of the 504th Parachute Regiment, landed two miles northwest of Biscari. After gathering as many of the scattered troopers as possible, the understrength battalion moved out towards the town of Niscemi. As they approached the Niscemi-Biscari highway, they encountered and captured two Italian anti-tank guns. With the newly acquired guns to bolster their defenses, the paratroopers dug in on positions covering the main highway. Not long after the Americans had finished laying mines, a German column approached, composed of mixed units of the Hermann Goring Division. Caught by surprise initially, the Germans soon recovered and pressed the attack. . .Attacker: German (Aufklärungs-Abteilung, Panzer Division "Hermann Göring")
Defender: American (3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division)

2022-11-18 | (D) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Herbert | American win (VASL Log) | Another great game with Herbert. American defense plan was to give up the VC building closest to the German entry areas and concentrate forces over other VC buildings. Americans also fired up some woods to make it harder for Germans to outflank the position. Mines covered the German advance through the grainfield and HIP HS with bazooka had to sacrifice itself to catch the Puma off guard. Dummies near the farest building had to win as much time as possible just with their presence, as the Germans doesn't have too much squads to risk them in the open that early. Luckily the every piece of the plan worked, so the game was very eventful like a war movie. Italian guns were malfunctioned almost instantly, so their crews had to push themself into the frontlines. One Crew even banished one German squad in the dangerous close to VC building and then killed in CC the German hero that appeared in the Heat of Battle. Thank you for the game, Herbert! It was great as always.
2022-08-20 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Bill Sosnicki | American win | The Germans chose to attack from the south advancing through the gully. The first turn went as planned. But, on Turn 2, one of the American captured guns went on a rate tear with six successive shots, all hits, one of which was a CH. The result was an enormous hole in the German force. The Germans scratched their way forward when an American HS rolled snakes on a interdiction MC, went Berzerk, survived 16 -4 and 20 -2 shots and subsequently immobilized the German AC before being eliminated. The American gun finally malfed giving the Germans a long shot opportunity to flank the crew and take control of two buildings. The crew DFF on a 2 -0 shot, rolled snakes, and the German SMC and MMC broke. At this point, the German player conceded.
2022-03-16 | (D) Neal Ulen | vs | Scott | American win | I don't know how the American's held on to win this one, but I set up a small fortress around the Y9 building when I saw Scott coming down that side of the board. I'd already placed minefields around it in setup. My Italian AT gun in the woods on the far right American flank took out the German AC early, then the crew wheeled it all the way down the road to set it up directly behind Y9. My other gun crew broke and I left it in the small shack next to y9 to keep the Germans from using it as cover on their last turn blitz, forcing them into the mines surrounding it. The Americans were beaten and battered, having only 1 squad (guarding CC6), 1 crew, 1 HS w/baz, 1 hero, and 6+1 leader (guarding Y9) during the last turn, up against 5 full German squads and a 9-2 leader around Y9. But the bastards did it. I was shocked.
2022-02-01 | (D) Alexey Kolleganov | vs | Dmitry Klyuykov | German win (VASL Log) | My first full ASL game. It was an unforgettable experience.
2022-02-01 | (A) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Alexey Kolleganov | German win (VASL Log) | Germans entered from the wooden area and started slow advance with shoot-out for the nearest objective. Puma broken MA with the first shot, but was useful in bypass, blocking dangerous US shots. Left flank was cleared by the dettached "gully" platoon. One HS secured and held the second objective. The ending was nervous because of similar chances shoot-out from the both sides, but Germans stood fast.

2022-01-31 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Peter Palmer | American win (VASL Log) | The German's attacked from the north through the woods. They made very good progress through Turn 3 while the Americans Pinned and Broke. The Americans were on their heals at the end of German Turn 3 with only 3 1/2 Good Order MMCs, one of which was surrounded, and 3 SMCs, but the tide quickly turned. Units were able to withdraw and rally. At the end of Turn 4 the Americans had reconstituted most of their original force. In addition, an American prisoner MMC successfully escaped, won CC creating a 8-0 SMC, and recovered a Baz. At the same time the German forces regularly broke, pinned, or suffered KIA. At the end of Turn 7 the outcome was decided with an American victory.
2022-01-29 | (A) Ken Rutkowski | vs | Bill T | American win
2022-01-23 | (D) Stephen Stewart | vs | Kevin Hannan | American win (VASL Log) | GOTM for the ASL RECON Group! Discussion. With no knowledge of Kevin's Experience, I just defaulted that he would take the woods approach as it "appears" to have the best cover. So, my AT gun's BS hexes were on the roads on the woods side AND most importantly POINTing that way. The Right half of the map (bottom half on the ASL ARchive image) had NOTHING but dummies. Where did Kevin come in ....Yep, The dummies. I was scrounging on how to setup a defense to salvage what was left of my game. I had setup Paskevich (9-1) in the Grain with the 2 minefields at the bottom of the map...(left side from the ARCHIVE) Plan was to TORCH the grainfield to leave nothing but OG to get to the bottom buildings...the mines covered the 2 hexes he could traverse...WELL< someone forgot the matches!!! 2 turns I tried...Nothing with 3 rolls each....so, I abandoned that plan...and had to duke it out with the Germans... Crazy fights and skirmishes all game... Germans were ADJ to my last hidden gun in the 3 hex Grain next to the gully...Again, pointing the wrong direction...His AC comes behind the gun....well. it's captured and if he's moving and I have to turn....I can't hit him. Firefights ensued with some Tricky LOS shots led to an American Victory on Turn 8...the LAST turn!! Great opponent in Kevin!
2022-01-15 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Craig Renier | American win | The Americans held off the German advance, taking out the armored car as it came up out of the gully. Keeping concealment and limiting the German fire is key. The mines ended up being well-placed slowing the advance even further.
2022-01-11 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Dave Mareske | German win (VASL Log) | The Americans were fully expecting a German attack through the woods rather than up the gully. That left a majority of the defenders out of position for the initial turns, especially one gun which was well out of the fight. A quick shift helped stem the tide, but when the armored car got an open ground overrun eliminating a squad and leader, the American fate was sealed.
2022-01-05 | (A) Dave Mareske | vs | Craig Renier | German win | Slow advance up the gully side of the map proved to catch the Americans slightly out of position. The armored car got an open ground overrun attack on a squad and a leader proving to be a turning point in the game. The Germans eventually broke the two of the American positions and leaving very little forces to make an effective counter-attack.
2021-09-25 | (D) Michael Rodgers | vs | Andrew Luden | American win | Germans came in on their left. Lost the AC on turn one. They took no buildings.

2021-02-13 | (D) Dan Best | vs | Kermit Mullins | German win
2021-02-13 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Dan Best | German win | As the Germans, I elected to come in on GG5-GG6 and move down the gully. I managed to eliminate one AT Gun and then the other MALF'd. My armored car went down to a bazooka shot on Turn 3, but by then I was moving across Board 4 to the CC6 and Y9 buildings. My 9-2 kept the Americans broken and DM'd on that side of the map as the other squads advanced to take the positions. Final American counter-attacks were repelled for a German win.
2020-05-05 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Nick Faryna | German win
2020-04-14 | (A) Pascal Boileau | vs | Doba Serge | German win | The Germans entered through the woods and planned to capture the upper and the lower buildings. Serge with the Americans was not helped by Italian guns (one was captured on turn 3 and the other broke on turn 4). Then two German squads rushed for the upper building whereas the American troops were placed under pressure by the armored car and most of the German firepower. The American defense collapsed in the last two turns leaving scattered units unable to recapture the two lost buildings.
2020-04-14 | (D) Doba Serge | vs | Pascal Boileau | German win
2020-01-30 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Ken Mioduski | American win | Ken was able to whittle me to the point that I was unable to carry on the attack. I was doing the same to him; however, the kicker was about mid way when I was moving in on an objective building and faced an IFT 2 DRM 0 attack. I had an 86% chance of surviving the attack unscathed. My stack melted, even though the attack cowered. That would have sent me back 2 turns with not enough turns left to recover, especially after losing my Armoured Car.
2019-03-05 | (A) Eric Partizan Eric | vs | German win
2018-09-20 | (D) John Malaska | vs | Jeff Buser | German win | Left one AT gun exposed to observation at start. Still, despite some poor early play, I made a game of it til the end.
2018-09-20 | (A) Jeff B | vs | John Malaska | German win | Having played and lost this from both sides under the old version, I decided to give it another try with the updated one. The only difference appears to be that the Americans can setup a squad (and any accompanying SMCs/SWs) HIP. I tried to bull my way in through the woods the first time around, ending in a great disaster, so this time I thought I'd try the open ground approach. Since the entry hex could not be fired upon I figured I run in some half squads and safely move in a couple kill stacks to blast any Americans that dared fire at them. My first far-ranging scout ran into a board-edge mine and, since I was quite certain the other would be in the central woods mass, I felt a little relief (especially when he entered and left it without incident). One of the guns was behind the hedge next to the furthest victory building, while the other was boldly positioned forward in the grain where I was approaching. When he whiffed on my AC the gun was soon overwhelmed by my infantry, though the crew did manage to escape. The AC was destined to soon be taken out by a BAZ anyway. My plan at this point was to grab the two furthest victory buildings but, when the Americans repositioned en masse to protect them, I gave up on the idea of taking the far building and switched my sights on the central one. Turn 3 saw the northwestern building secured, while the central building was most certainly next on the following turn. This proved to be true, and I pressed onward toward the third and last building while my superior range, SW, and leadership provided cover from afar. A fortuitous snakeeyes roll on a spraying fire shot ended those dreams however, while some hidden Americans popped up on my left to threaten the northwest building. Suddenly this turned back into a game when his 9-1 and HS survived umpteen shots to get within striking distance. In the end, my lone remaining HS in the northwest victory building rolled a KIA to eliminate the last American push. Great game.
2018-03-19 | (A) Paul Works | vs | Rick Reinesch | German win
2017-08-13 | (A) Michael Rodgers | vs | Keith Hill | American win | My last Tussle match was against Keith Hill in 178 THE NISCEMI-BISCARI HIGHWAY. We diced for sides. Having played it now, I believe the Germans need the balance of one less American squad. The Germans must choose one of two entry areas: one in open ground and the other in a woods road. The open ground entry is so frightening that the American can concentrate his forces against the covered entry, which Keith did. I chose the covered entry. I even ran the AC through a woods hex to avoid the two HIP ATG. It did not bog! My infantry, however, had very much trouble passing morale checks and inflicting damage. My forces very slowly worked their way to the nearest building, finding both mine hexes in the process. Amazingly, two HS and a wounded leader took the building from a 747 in CC by snake-eyes. This was after four turns, however, and I did not have enough troops left to attack another building, so I conceded.
2017-05-18 | (D) Gordon Jupp | vs | Simon Church | American win | Won the game on last turn by running a 1/2 squad which had remained HIP throughout into one of the buildings thus recapturing it so that Germans only held one...seemed a bit gamey....
