Overview:
Colonel Robert Sink and the 506th PIR had orders to seize the main highway bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal and then secure Eindhoven, the southernmost objective of the airborne “carpet” and only ten miles distant from the British armor waiting to surge forward from the Meuse-Escaut Canal bridgehead. With his regiment down in good order along the edge of the Zonsche Woods, Sink sent his 1st Battalion racing to grab the great bridge. There was almost no opposition . . .until the paratroopers reached the northern outskirts of the village of Zon. As they entered the village, fire erupted from a concealed heavy AA piece, one of several in place to protect the vital bridge from Allied bombers.Attacker: American (1st Battalion, 506th Parahute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division)

2024-01-21 | (A) Brian Lazewski | vs | Darin Lesefka | American win | The German's had the misfortune of an 88 malfunction on its very first to hit. I've played this one a few times, it always comes down to effective use and placement of the 88s.

2022-10-30 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Craig Renier | German win | The middle game found the Germans making their MCs and the Americans failing some of theirs. The biggest delay was the Americans were unable to rally their units quickly and some risky German chances were rewarded by keeping them DM. The Americans also forgot their smoke and rolled several 6's trying to place some, further delaying their movement. The sprint on turn 6 left the Americans facing a fairly full compliment of German units. Hard fought, but the Germans prevailed this time.
2022-09-14 | (A) Jack Wilson | vs | Craig Renier | German win | Well-played game on Craig's part. He did an excellent job of combining skulking and concealment in the early turns which took some of the bite out of my American FGs. Eventually, with the help of some good dice, I was able to drive back most of his screening force and set myself up for the sprint for the exit on turn 6. There appeared to be a glimmer of hope when one of his 88s X'ed out on an IF shot. On the last turn I had to navigate a MMC w/LMG and his last 88 lining their sights up on my exit hexes. Game came down to one last all-or-nothing 6 down 2 SFF shot. Not great odds by any stretch, but his 2KIA result ended all doubt. Great game, and I learned a thing or two along the way.
2022-09-14 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Jack Wilson | German win | The Germans effectively delayed the American advance while simultaneously retaining concealment. Also, a very lucky shot broke 2 American MMCs and a 9-2 leader on the east side costing the Americans a full turn to get off the board. The Americans rallied and thrust quickly on the east and west sides. The first German AA gun revealed itself and got a CH against two squads and a leader crossing a road, but did not keep ROF. The AA gun IF'd against another MMC crossing the road and rolled boxcars, eliminating the gun. On the final turn, a broken German MMC in a board edge building blocked part of the approach to exit. The Germans helped by making another DFF blunder offering a window of a chance for an American victory. The 2nd AA gun missed on its first shot and only pinned one MMC with IF. The last American stack with more VPs needed to exit, was forced to face a 6-2 shot. The Germans rolled a 2KIA ending any chance for an American victory. The dice on the last turn handed the Germans a victory despite a number of significant blunders.
2022-08-25 | (A) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Cusick, John | American win
2022-07-31 | (D) M T | vs | V K | German win | The German defense held, partly due to some great ROF rolls and lots of ITT Critical Hits. Those 88s can really be a nuisance. A classic scenario for sure!
2022-07-28 | (A) Jack Wilson | vs | Ken Walsh | American win | I've played the SK version of this old classic a few times, but this was the first time for ASL. On the surface the two OBs look out of balance. The German player has only five SE (all 2nd line or conscripts) to oppose 11 American 7-4-7s. The Americans have to exit 7VP of the far edge by turn 6. Keep in mind that the three American leaders alone add up to 7 VP. However, two things give the Americans pause here: the exit corridor is only three hexes wide, and, oh yeah, it is guarded by two entrenched 88s! I made a mistake on turn one by giving up an OG shot to one of his 88s that KIAd one of my squads. A definite unforced error. Ken chose to fight a forward defense with his entire infantry force in hopes of grinding me down and eating up the clock. I felt that maybe a fighting withdrawal, or a defense in-depth, might have worked better for him. Nevertheless, due to his rallying three squads in one RPh, and his sniper wounding my 9-2 leader, I found myself suddenly one turn behind my timetable and not feeling optimistic. I eventually neutralized his infantry screening force, thanks in part to going 3-0 in three important CCs. By my turn five I was in position to charge into the flaming mouths of his 88s. At this point, the odds looked very much against me. I had a bunch of puny shots at his entrenched 88s, while he had the potential to make rate a couple of times and chew my assault wave up. Fortunately, the DRs went my way. and he ended turn five with both of his crews broken and DMd. So, it all came down to the turn six RPh, and when he failed to self-rally both crews, there was nothing left to stop me from running past the useless 88s to the finish line. Another one of those scenarios that came down to the last turn, and that I fully expected to lose right up until I didn't.
2022-05-16 | (D) Tony Fermendzin | vs | Stephen Stewart | German win | The German force seemed brittle in this one, so the plan was to conduct a fighting withdrawal with the emphasis on withdrawal. The Germans were able to capitalize on a good shot on the first turn eliminating an American squad along with the Americans 8-1 leader. The Germans were then able to pull back each turn, trading space for time. Trying to delay the Americans and hoping that the Americans would not get close and tear them up in the AFPh. The Germans held up quite well until near the end when they malfunctioned one of the 88's, and the American fire just became too much too handle. But then on their last turn, seemingly out of nowhere, they were able to repair the gun and rally nearly all of their forces, even managing to roll snake eyes on a self rally attempt, creating an additional leader to assist with holding back the Americans as they made their final push to get off the map. The Germans, now a formidable force, with their newly found courage proved to be too much for the Americans in the end as every shot seemed to hit home on the last turn breaking the Americans as they tried to get off the map to the bridge. Thanks Stew for the great game.
2022-05-16 | (A) Stephen Stewart | vs | Tony F | German win (VASL Log) | My Americans tried to force their way into the dried out gully...seeking a clean end around to the 88's. Tripping up in an Ambush, Cpl Stew refuses to yield and pays the ultimate price. Turn 1 Disaster, no leadership no momentum and the 88's haven't even awoken. Turn 2 sees the necessity to send Leadership and reinforcements to the Gully GI's...While the Big Boy 9-2 has to go it alone into the Teeth of the Wermacht. Smoke nades being tossed around like Hot Potatoes! Blurring every approach...Good progress made albeit with no German casualties, but progress none the less.... BOOM...BOOM 88's have awakened... Bring them Bazookas up NOW!! Units berzerking under the pressure, Paratroopers getting shredded in the streets YET we manage to take out an 88 crew (well, his 12 MC helped a little) Poised for the ULTIMATE plan of attack...The Germans, inspired by the heroes of the Gully Ambush ALL RALLY and take up defensive positions to repulse the YANKS from ever leaving the village.... Seeing themselves being flanked...Americans have lost the will to fight... MC's just not holding up after numerous empty smoke nades tossed into the deadly roadway leading to some hard awaited R&R... The Fury of MG fire ends the last push of the Paratroopers as they approached the victory exit...
2022-05-04 | (A) Mark Thompson | vs | German (Not Sure) | German win (VASL Log) | German victory. After shaking off a few dents when entering, the two wings of the American attack advanced as mutually supporting columns down the gully and West side of the village and reached the approaches to the exit hexes relatively unscathed. The Germans skillfully retreated to delay the columns, but were unable to hold them back and lost one 88L to AFph and CC/Melee. However, the American's concentrated push in the West failed to cover one 4-4-7/LMG in the East moving to block one of the exit hexes. On the American's final turn, 14 Exit VP were in reach of exiting - and victory seemed assured when the one remaining 88L rolled boxcars - but 8 VPs (including the 9-2 leader) were unable to push through the FF, SFF, FPF and the wall of residual thrown by the one blocking 4-4-7/LMG, all failing MCs., leaving the Americans with 1 VP short of the 7 required to win. A very thin margin that ultimately went to the German's skillful defense and the American's inexplicable failure to drop smoke on one the blocking 4-4-7's hex to lessen the effect of its Defensive Fire. Good game @NotSure
2022-04-20 | (D) Mark Thompson | vs | Americans (Squire of Gothos) | German win | German victory. In this intense, seesawing scrap, the Americans were pinned and badly attritted in their entry hexes in Turns 1 and 2 through a combination of smiling Dice Gods and FTR. Payback came in Turns 3 and 4 in the form of a devastating American sniper attack (KIA on German 8-1/break 4-6-7 via LLMC), which sent the Germans scurrying back to their "Alamo" entrenchments with 88Ls near exit hexes with 2 GO squads (some others cut-off when caught in over-zealous route cutting attempts). The tide swung back to the Germans with a sniper attack (KIA on HoB-generated hero/break Baz 44 toting 7-4-7) and 88L hits on another 7-4-7 in bypass and a 9-2/7-4-7 stack caught in the open with a risky intensive fire. This proved to be decisive as these units had the best prospects of exit. Tough scenarios if Germans use forward defense and get good early rolls and Americans fail multiple smoke attempts.....
2022-04-20 | (D) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Fedor Melnikov | German win (VASL Log) | Americans tried a rush for a quick distance advantage, but German fire was deadly and 2 initial US squad disappeared. Second wave entered more cautiously, but 88's fire from the woods was unforgiving. US conceded after dr 6 on smoke attempt at Turn 3, as German defense was still intact.
2022-04-14 | (A) Alexey Kolleganov | vs | Fedor Melnikov | American win (VASL Log) | A great puzzle game for both the defending and attacking player. As always keeps in suspense until the last throw.
2022-04-13 | (A) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Fedor Melnikov | American win (VASL Log) | Americans played very aggressive, moving through the open alot. 88s were deadly, but didn't have shells for everyone. The game was face-to-face, so I tried to approximately restore the story in the VASL log.
2022-03-21 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Nick Faryna | German win | Great little scrap, although the US had great difficulty passing MCs.
2022-01-22 | (A) Pascal Boileau | vs | Tony Gibson | German win | A really entertaining scenario. I managed to place half of the American troops near the exit hexes but the 88s were on fire from the beginning to the end game. They performed outstandingly inflicting many kills in the American side while maintaining ROF...Tony's last moves finally ruined my last hopes. It was a very nice game !

2021-10-08 | (A) nathan wegener | vs | Keith Spurlock | American win | Was able to close rapidly as the Ami’s made their rally rolls every single time they broke…. German 88’s were placed well but weren’t able to make enough of a difference. ASLOK ‘21

2021-05-26 | (D) Jacob Elmqvist | vs | Ingemar Gardell | German win
2021-04-11 | (D) Paul Works | vs | Dan Best | American win | Dan's Americans attached heavily on the west and were generally able to withstand my 2-2 and 4-2 shots, and one 88mm hit I obtained. I broke a few units, but only killed a HS. I was able to slow him done in the mid-game. He was able to get a hero(!) and a HS into melee with one of my gun crews and tied it up for most of the game. My other gun was in one of the exit hexes and was able o get a few kills on Turn 5. On my Turn 5, I also set up two squads and one leader to interdict the exit hexes, forcing Dan to run through a substantial amount of FP. Which he did. I shot up quite a few Americans, but he made just enough MCs and 1MCs to get 8 VC on the board. Good job by Dan, and totally fun!
2021-04-11 | (A) Dan Best | vs | Paul Works | American win | The 88s got few hits and when they did few kills. Allowing the Americans to push the Germans back and kill half their troops by turn six. Then 8 VP ran the resid gauntlet for the exit. Including a wounded 6+1 leader created by a self rally HS. Very close match with Paul. Great fun.
2021-03-19 | (A) Jacob Elmqvist | vs | Kalle Widell | German win
2021-02-17 | (A) Alberto González Ramírez | vs | Solo | American win
2020-06-16 | (D) X von Marwitz | vs | Lars-Peder Jensen | German win | One of the classics. I can't remember if I ever played this before but if so, it must have been decades ago. Some weak German forces that are supported by two powerful 88 AA guns have to fend of US forces of the 101st Airborne Division, which means that they have tremedous infantry fire power. Board 24 is not exactly well suited for sweeping fire by AA guns, so it should be carefully considered where to place them to make them count. I had the defending Germans in this one. When the US forces enter, the Germans have the opportunity to fire at many of the entry hexes. But they need to be careful not to be caught by the advancing Americans. Nevertheless, the Germans need to delay the enemy as long as they can. What helps the Germans is that the US must exit some forces through 3 hexes, so it is known where the Paratroopers will eventually head to. In our game, my initial successes to take some good shots at entering US units were not very good. Nor could I do much damage otherwise. Luckily I did manage to fall back to places without the Americans being able to cut off my retreat The game crystalized in the area around the exit hexes. In US Turn 5, at long last I managed to break plenty of US troops (5 HS and a squad), which took out some of his steam and prevented the units to fire at the Germans in German Turn 5. However, by US Turn 6, almost all of them were again ready for action. Meanwhile, one of the gun crews had been killed and I had only one 88 AA gun, a HS, a 8-1 possessing the second 88 AA gun and a lone leader left in good order. Several brokies were cluttering the exit area. And this is what in the end prevented the Americans from moving offboard the required number of Exit VP. Interesting and tense game.
2020-04-25 | (A) Allen Evenson | vs | David Wolfe | German win | Got off to a slow start and never recovered. Finally had some success turn 3, 4 but ran out of time. Fun game - part of our PSASL 'Virtual' Game-day, due to not being able to meet up at Around the Table Game pub.
2020-03-25 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Dave Mareske | American win | Hard game from start to finish. Dave had an upfront defense that stalled me on Turn 1. Slowly I managed to advance and due to many unlucky rolls for Dave's 88's, my Americans succeeded in exiting 8 VP on Turn 6 for the win.

2019-02-03 | (A) Derek Rowe | vs | Mike | German win | I lost as the Americans. I could not penetrate the forward defensive line fast enough. This slowed down my progression and forced me into several hastily disastrous double time moves. The German 88s were well positioned and caused me many a headache as well as wind that picked up to moderate speed blowing my smoke into the opposite direction. Tough loss but would love to give it another go.
