The Eastern GateThis is a very odd scenario, with the first turn or two just moving columns until they gain LOS. After that, the Gurkhas don't want to attack too quickly because they can't lose CVP. And the Japanese want to wait until their forces arrive.

So, it's a bit cat-and-mouse. The Gurkhas have to decide if they want to push for the hill, killing Japanese early while they have the advantage.

I can't imagine the Japanese first column doing anything other than hustling from Board 35 to Board 37, trying to block the center path and perhaps screen any approach to the hill. The Gurkhas can easily avoid the Turn 3 sudden death VC, but then face an unpleasant fight to the hill, or turtling up in the southwest portion of the map (Board 37).

My first Japanese column rushed down the F hex row onto Board 37 to block as described. But then they needed to retreat in front of Phil's Gurkhas who have a numerical and quality superiority. My plan was to delay them until my other two columns arrived and I could smoke and banzai.

Phil tried to kill my first column, but was thwarted by some good morale rolls and an active sniper. He just wasn't able to get any thing going, except for one terrifying phase with the HMGs and an 8-1.

It slowly evolved into two matched forces coming together in Turn 7 with the Japanese able to lose every unit as long as they inflict 12, and the Gurkhas falling back into strong lines. But my Japanese sniper was awesome, and had picked off an 8-0, a broken half-squad, and then finally a 9-2. Combined with a Fate Rally roll, I was at 6CVP before the major assault.

On Turn 8, all hell broke loose. A mtr placed WP, and the Japanese ran into the guns, charging for close combat. Results were mixed, as I lost 13 CVP in one player turn, but I got to 10 CVP against the Gurkhas. There were 3 broken Gurkha squads on one side of the battle and both the leaders there had been sniped, so they would have been easy pickings in the last two turns, so we called it.

Eagles at AusterlitzFirst to play and post. Rommel killed by sniper turn 1 cutting the movement of German tanks in half. Germans could not win the armor battle and could not take the hill. Danno
Eagles at AusterlitzA lot going on on in this game...too much frankly. Some of the fun is lost because each turn takes so long and it becomes a grind. Rommel KIA'd on Turn 1 by the Sniper and that result basically hamstrings the Germans hard. My 47L AT gun on the hill was knocking out tanks at 30+ hexes. My mortar savaged a kill stack of 8-3-8's. The Germans were pressing hard on the Russians in the village, but both sides taking some hard hits. Overall...not a bad scenario...just overly ambitious. grumblejones

Four Stars of ValorI took a gamble and setup my MMG under wire in 18aQ15 to lay a FL for the entering Allies. I had him covered with the HT and 47AT in case a carrier should threaten him, and with a PSK in case of a Sherman. Thankfully it worked as planned and delayed them a turn, as well as costing them a Brit squad. I then abandoned and stripped the HT of its LMG, and repositioned my MMG in O13 for the next FL. Unknown to me, Magnus had a lot of Ami dummies to make his attack in the west look much more threatening. I had my fair share as well on both fronts. The Amis took a punch on the nose Turn 2 trying to cross the RR tracks, losing a HS, wounding and breaking the 8-1, and seeing 1.5 squads run for cover. The Brits made inroads in the first 18a factory, followed closely behind by a lot of Ami muscle. I lost a couple dummies on the bottom of the turn. Turn 3 saw the Allies used brute force to eliminate 1.5 German squads as they captured the first factory but, despite saying he'd probably regret it, Magnus risked parking the Firefly on the 18a E road. He paid the price when the 88L popped up in the very obvious E10, blasting both the Firefly and a carrier to smithereens, stopping only because he was out of targets. The much-welcomed StuGs entered and parked in front of the B7 rowhouse, as it was apparent to me that his plan was to eliminate me from the RR vicinity. So Turn 4 saw him change that plan and make more of a push on the 19a factories. At times he moved too aggressively, and it cost him a LOT of exposed dummy stacks. Inroads were again made in the 2nd 18a factory. The Germans lost a HS to combat, and another on boxcar rallying. Turn 5 was a disaster for the Allies after they risked opp firing most of their units in the factory while their HS friends stripped my wall of concealment. I allowed the placement of a DC in one fortified hex, wanting to take my chances on the whole stacks in DFPh. Meanwhile his press on the factory in the west was rebuffed by some stout shooting by my repositioned StuG (after having destroyed a Sherman), AA gun, and HIP LMG HS. Wire and mines would further constrict his path of advance there. In DFPh my other StuG broke an MMG Ami squad in one factory hex; the 9-2 went down, the DC-placing hero wounded and died, a HS was lost, and the rest of the stack (MMG squad/HS) broke. My squad would pay the price breaking when the DC detonated, but there was now nobody in reach to grab his fortified hex. His Brits survived two servings of PB fire, but failed to break my squad in the other fortified hex. This left them able to grab only one hex of the factory, and this hex was being watched by the 45L AT. After all these setbacks, and with only two turns left, the Allies called off the attack. For whatever reason I had been under the impression that a large chunk of the TotR scenarios used ElRRs, but I was mistaken. This wasn't a bad scenario, and now I'll be more apt to play some of the others. buser333
FoxtailWell...this older design is just plain bad. Some errors on the scenario card and very hard on the Russians. Even with some snakes rolled against me, my SS were able to quickly control the battlefield. New scenario card to be provided with significant changes to the scenario. grumblejones
Grenadier DashFast playing game. Scenario Card will be updated and an extra British Sherman or two will be added. My SS managed to 6 of the 10 fleeing squads to the victory zone. Max Schmeling’s Right HookEpic scenario down to the last CC DR. King Tigers were utterly dominant in final turn with ALs leveraging SSR allowing ROF to be increased by ALs’ modifier instead of TH DRM. Momentum ebbed and flowed for each side throughout. Comfortably NumbThoroughly enjoyable despite being an Urban slugfest. Good practice with moving vehicles in bypass, a little OBA although didn't use it in this game. Add in the Stuka for some extra fun too. Germans struggled with the dice Gods in this one, pretty much from the start. Russians clung to the Stone buildings on the West Side for way longer than anticipated, despite eventually succumbing. Stuka was unlucky but caused some delay with its PIN results even if it didn't hit anything. One Stug charged into the Gully, gunned the engine back out to get in front of the T34's, and rolled Snakes on the Bounding Fire to takeout one T34 which was the highlight of German play. Unfortunately the other T34 rolled its own Snakes next fire phase to leave the Stug a burning wreck. Russians got their 9 Stone Building ground locations in T6 CCPh, upon which the Germans conceded. Operation DevonMy son and I found some errors in the scenario card. Those will be fixed and a new card uploaded. This is a very early effort and it shows. But the game went down to the final turn. The British secured 4 of the 5 victory locations. The last remaining MKIV was sitting on the 5th location. It successfully won a duel with a Sherman and the final British surge was successfully repulsed for a German victory. We enjoyed this one. grumblejones
Crushed PrideThe SSR is not clear but probably intends that the attacker gets cloaking counters, including dummies. Ralph took a slow cautious approach. On turn 5, the Italians had squads in the railroad hexes ADAJCENT to the wooden bridge. Ralph understood that placing a DC under the bridge was sufficient. We played it out to see if it made a difference. Tried twice, one crew broke and the other rolled 6,6 for resolution. Larry
Chamber of DeputiesAnother interesting and fun game. Made drastic changes to the force disposition to change the Americans to actual Free French. Good to clean up these old designs. Scenario is tough for both sides. The German AA guns got repeated critical hits which destroyed an M10, an M8 Greyhound, the M8 HMC and both halftracks. Free French did not eliminate the final resistance until Turn 6. grumblejones

Goch YaI love these Engineering Scenarios. If you get most of your Smoke rolls you'll largely make it to the Ditch in resonable good order. I got that checked off. Got a bridge across. Going into Turn 3 I had a good amount of smoke that would have covered my last bit of open ground running into the buildings. Wouldn't you know, I rolled Gust!. Bye bye smoke and I was forced to run the open ground, otherwise the clock would have run out. Had I not rolled gust an placed 1 of three attempts of Prep Fire Smoke, I believe it would have been a tight scenario. Had I rolled mild Breeze instead, it would have greatly favored the Brits. A good fun attempt!

In Sight of the VolgaGame was going ok for the Germans until Turn 7 reinforcements began to roll in for the Russians, just as I was about to push into the factory. At this point I had already suffered 40% casualties and would not have enough resources to secure the building with the newly arriving 628s interfering so we called it. Dave played a good collapsing defensive game and drew me into several close combats which turned against me. His MG kill beat were less effective.

Germans attacked along two fronts to sweep buildings N5 and P9 before moving towards the factory building. But as mentioned there were too many newly arriving fresh 628 to handle. Ahriman667

The Battle of Mali SpadaritThere's an interesting tactical option at play here for the Italians from the start, which I tried to leverage. Initially, the Italians were able to break a few units, suffer a few losses, but important gain some important ground. Making some decent progress, they were on the verge of collapsing the Greek defensive position at the top of the hill until the Hidden Gun managed a 4-shot run in one phase, blowing away several units, never faltering in the subsequent turns.

Considering the scenario, I was surprised that this scenario did not feature a Hero for the Italians. I hope that if this scenario ever were changed, it would include that and halve the board, making the Greek reinforcements come in on Turn 3 or 4. Jobbo_Fett
Streets of KharkovPlayed solo. SS were able to send the three required KG Peiper squad-equivalents adjacent to the hedgehog on the last turn securing the victory.

Russians were able, mostly, to hold off the Germans, but the dice turned cold in Turns 4 and 5, and the last few Russian tanks brewed up, and the Infantry melted away, leaving the path open for the rush to the east. I also misplayed the Russian reinforcements having them come in too close to the Germans that had secured that south flank, losing two tanks in the process, with a third malf'ing its MA and subsequently Recalled.

Great Tom Morin scenario. (VASL Log) Ahriman667

Then Things Got WorseGrant split his tanks and brought 3 each on the E and W
edges, with his infantry more heavily on the E side.

Our playing was atypical, imho. Grant did give me some
-2 shots and I managed to get some lucky rolls. With
a couple of turns left, Grant was down to about six squads.

I still had my full complement of infantry, and Grant's French
resigned.

As the Germans I had the balance, but I think they need a bit more.
IMHO the scenario is waaaaay too long. I think Grant's French could
have taken a more conservative approach to advancing towards the
village and would have enjoyed better success.

Grant thinks a better solution (rather than decrease the number of
turns) is to give a the Germans a crew and LMG.

I would play this again. Not a bad scenario, but there are so many
more that are better. Indy Lagu
Breakout From PrääzäThis is a fun scenario and has a unique feel. I can see how this scenario can be polarizing. One bad turn can really change the trajectory, making it feel dicy despite the size. The Russians have overwhelming force but are brittle. The Finns have superior troops, but not enough to cover everything. I feel the scenario captures the feel of the front. One bad CC phase saw me loose two and a half squads and a leader. That put me against the wall for the rest of the scenario. The last turn saw a wagon run through a river a residual fire to push the Russians to 42 EVP and the win. First time a wagon has won a scenario in my ASL career. RJenulis

Push to PilastrinoWe called this a draw after the British had lost almost all of their vehicles, save a pair of misc stuff and the Matildas, and noticing that one of the victory conditions was having to destroy all Italian vehicles - something near impossible to do thanks to the half-level LOS obstacles in the broken terrain. One of the biggest factors in our choice to call it early was the fact that the British infantry underperformed by a wide margin, partly due to the relatively high AF of the Italian front armor and nullifying all hits against the hull. Perhaps the VCA should be specific and not the TCA? I'm not exactly sure how I'd modify this scenario to "fix" it

Gavin TakeAmericans quickly ran into German resistance in the town. 10-2 leader and a few squads tried to sweep around through the orchards, but a MMG on the second level had them sighted in and kept them from flanking. Needing to press the attack, 10-3 and several squads flushed out the Germans and progressed slowly through Chef du Pont as the surviving Germans took up positions in the buildings outside town near the bridge.

Putting some firepower onto the larger building suppressed the Germans enough to reduce the risk of a rush to take the bridge. A burst from a German squad in a foxhole broke one of the Prep Firing 7-4-7's which resulted in it turning Fanatical and creating a Hero in the next RPh.

Another American HS jumped a German 4-4-7 with LMG in a row house locking him down in melee. With time running out, the rallied 10-2 and two 7-4-7s used the bocage to get close to the last pocket of German resistance and toss smoke grenades.

With their smoke screen cover, Gavin (10-3) along with a hero, a fanatical 7-4-7, and two other 7-4-7's made a run for the bridge [only one hex wasn't protected]... as luck would have it, the entire stack survived and were able to exit the victory hex. Seton BlockI was pretty slow going in the first 3 turns, not wanting to write off my Japanese too early in early Banzai charges. Around turn 3 things looked a bit grim, and I was on the cusp of giving up, but a single snake eyes on a 4fp +3 shot changed the situation entirely. Two squads broke, and suddenly the left side of board was open. The Japanese conscripts rushed to the buildings.

The right side push was much harder, but managed to get into the outskirts. Richard's counterattack suffered from miserable dice, everything broke, and he rolled three 6s in a row for Ambush.

Shulzhenok and the Three StuG'sI'm usually a harsh critic of my designs...but this scenario played out so much better than I had ever imagined it could. I took the Russians and managed to knock out two of the 3 STUG's. Shulzenok would miss (barely) on his third shot. But I had placed him on the ground and my son had his 7-0 and a 4-3-6 KIA Shulzenok in Close Combat. With that loss, there was no way for a Russian immediate win. So the fight would come down to the 3 victory locations. The poor quality Germans had trouble moving through the rubble and broke and disrupted. The Russians MALF'd all of their MG's, but a single 4-5-8 and the Russian 9-2 with a 2-4-8 successfully flanked the Germans and in the final close combat phase took back the M3 location to deny the German victory. My son had not been able to react quickly enough to stop that movement all the way back in his rear and his last remaining STUG was plugged up by all the rubble. It was a very fun scenario. With Iron WillA convincing Russian victory on the last German turn. I the German defender had knocked out or driven off almost all the Russian tanks but had little answer to the horde of elite Russian infantry which swarmed my remaining position in the last stone building and won the game for him. Steve's 8ML guys kept passing MC after MC while my infantry -- who had displayed 'iron will' in the first couple turns -- melted away and marched off to the PW camps in Siberia with little complaint. I recommend the German balance of the HMG and adding a CVP cap on the Russians to give the German a better chance at winning. Agoldin
Along the VistulaTwo scenarios in one, divided by a river. Lost both tanks trying to be clever with VB sleaze. One destroyed and one immobilised. The Polish defence was well structured to delay the German advance, forcing advances through buildings and woods. Had a couple of good results with close combat but by the end of the Polish Turn 5 I had no chance of exiting any VP's and no chance of capturing all the buildings required so I resigned. Well played to Hugh. Nicho11
Esprit CombatifGreat scenario! Lots of replay value. The French bid was 23 (22 is recommended on the scenario card as a starting pooint), which turned out to be too low IMO, but that wasn't obvious at first. That bid acts as a sliding CVP cap for the Germans, but CVP they earn also make a difference. By Turn 5, I had lost too much. The Germans have to figure out the French defenses on the move, but still have to keep up a steady pace. Lots of German AFVs but lots of French AT weapons, including MOL. I would play this one again as either side. asl458

Sainte-Barbe on FireGame ended far too quickly. German units/fire lanes expertly penned in the French attacker but they averaged a ridiculous 4.91(!) on 11 MCs. A Push in the BushSome last minute heroics allowed for the Brits to push through/break the entire Italian force and just about make it off the board.

There are a lot of options here for replayability thanks to the overlays and the SSR attached to them. The vehicles can be a powerful asset and their speed and firepower needs to be managed well. Not too short, but with some fun tactics, its hard NOT to recommend this one. Jobbo_Fett

Ambitious AssaultThere might be just one way for the Allied to win this scenario, and this was it: with the Allied balance, and both the Italian HMG and MMG malfunctioning on the first turn and never repairing. Seriously now, even then it could be hard for the Allied forces if they just wait for those 6+3 or 8+3 shots to be effective. Here, the Allied player saw the opportunity and, through some tactical moves (risky, but less so without the only heavy firepower from the defenders) took things to close combat. Because of the VCs, staying in Melee would not win the game for the Allied, but the difference in FP is so brutal that the odds were always against the Italians. In the end, all forces but one DM Italian squad were obliterated from the board. (VASL Log) mestravis
Tettau's AttackCertainly a case of quality vs quantity.

I think Ben's Brits stayed a bit longer than they should
have. Should I stay or should I go is one of the most
agonizing decisions a defender has to make and I think
Ben chose to shoot a bit too long.

I managed to get three squads and a leader past Ben's

that the Brits had been bypassed.

Gavin TakeJim and I played this at our DC Conscripts Game Day, resulting in a narrow win for the Americans. Jim set up his defending Germans forward where they fell to Gavin's 10-3 fire direction. Jim quickly pulled back to the vicinity of the exit area, where he set up interlocking fields of machine gun fire. Jim's Germans threw back my paratroopers a couple of times resulting in the loss of at least two squad equivalents. It wasn't until repeated shots by a Gavin-directed base of fire finally took down one of two MMGs that I was able to make for the exit. Even with that it still came down to the dice -- I had better dice than Jim did and was able to exit the minimum required to win. Highlight of the game was a German HS going beserk and charging Gavin and his men. I had never seen a 24 -5 attack before. Suffice it to say, the HS died quickly. Fun game! Agoldin
Task Force SparksPlayed solo for playthrough video. I wanted to try an American attack on the right-hand side, where the Germans only set up a squad in xU3. The German gun was emplaced in yB2 and took care of one tank and one squad. I think the Americans need one more turn, on top of some luck, to win this scenario. The VCs mean that they have to cover a lot of ground breaking or displacing Germans: at minimum, the cluster of buildings in xDD3-DD4-EE4, the NW corner of the village in yH3-I2-J1-J3, and the area beyond the woods (around yD7-E8-F8-G9). All of these are places where Germans can set up with FP to spare. The surviving American tank tried to venture into the SW corner but was bogged even though they were careful to avoid the +3 bog check DRM by spending a whole turn. Even so, with one more turn it would've been close. Board x was secured, and the NW corner of the village in board y was about to fall. Still, a very fun and exciting scenario, great for learning ordnance and vehicles. mestravis
The Wolves' Last ToothThis scenario's objective ruins the scenario as a whole. I had set up my troops to defend 47P10 to 47I1, only to realize once things had started that the objective goes all the way down to 41P10, an entire extra board side. With no errata for this scenario that I could see here, I just assumed that this was either a typo that nobody caught, or bad design.

For the actual substance of the scenario, I think there's some fun to be had, the dance between tankettes and Greek troops with SWs, as well as the maneuvering needed for the Italians to go for the ExitVP leads to interesting results. Because of my setup and our realization, I simply wasn't able to catch and/or punish the Italians travelling along the 9/10 hexrows on Board 41 for the easy off - especially as my own troops were being broken/routed in the process. A new publisher in the shop!
Le Franc Tireur have joined the ranks of third party publishers who will be selling digital packs on the shop.

Their first publication in English (and some French!), LFT #8, is now available via LFT #8's publication page and features both the 90+ page magazine and 10 scenarios, for $24.

LFT are trialling the service and if there's enough interest he will be adding many more publications, so if you can support them either through words of encouragement or by purchasing the pack, we have more digital content to look forward to!

Minor updates
The scenario page now has an Order of Battle editor to ease the pain of editing scenarios and slight update in the way scenarios are linked by name to scenarios in ROAR.

More updates
The Publications page has had a minor face-lift and I've amended the scenario recommendations to exclude scenarios recommended that have the same name as scenarios you've already played before.

Site updates!
There's some updates to the scenario pages and the "My Page" that help find fun scenarios to play, based on other player's recommendations.

On the scenario page, you can see other scenarios that have been rated highly, based upon user ratings who have rated the initial scenario highly. (It's all a bit complex but it does try to quell the problem of good, popular scenarios outranking lesser played scenarios that might have a higher correlation).

On your "My Page" I've updated the games played and the publications owned tables to be a little more useful, and made an effort to speed up the rendering of the page, too. There's also a scenario recommender on there that takes into account scenarios that you have rated highly, and the input of other players - and checking that you haven't already played that scenario before (no promises on scenarios that have been released multiple times though, currently!)

Firstly, just visiting and using the site is great - thanks for being here. You can contribute in many ways, from simply entering data like logging your plays, or your collection - through to rating scenarios or writing reviews. The site does cost me about $100/month to host, which I've been happy to do for a number of years now, and will continue to do so. Don't worry - we're not going away! However, if you'd like to support further donations are welcome (and all donations go towards the costs of running the site) or you could become a Patreon supporter for all sorts of funky benefits! (More details on the Patreon page.)

Patreons and regular donators are signified with a checkmark
on some panels across the site.
