German panzers dominated from the hilltop taking out all the Shermans by second turn and cracking a few defenders trying to shuffle the line. It's About TimeWith almost all the British tanks down the Germans were able to secure the bridge with a tank, get it blown up, and then secure the bridge with the escaping crew. Fun game that provided attacking and defending for both sides. dmareske
Commando Schenkelooked bad initially as the Russians ended German T1 with 3 broken squads + 8-1 and the Maxim MMG malfed on its first shot. However in T2 the 10-2 boxcarred an NMC taking out wounding with both FT squads breaking. I was able to keep them broken for another 2 full turns which really turned the tide. Germans simply did not have enough troops to take down all the Russians the fortified building nebel
The Professor's HouseSuper fun game. My Germans struggled to eliminate the Russian 4-2-6's on the flanks. This slowed me down just enough to keep from taking all the needed victory locations. I managed to secure on half of the building, but ran out of time. Lots of brutal close combats. Russian ATR managed a level 3 rear shot and knocked out one of the MK III's. Just a lot of fun.

Death's Head DenouementTough dice against the Germans as they broke two Tiger MA, but the infantry stepped up and knocked out two T34/85s, with one to go in the last CC phase, needed a 7 to eliminate the last Russian tank and failed with a 9. The Germans were effective in keeping the Russians out of the building, though had to break and CC them in the last turn as well. dmareske

The Merville RushFun scenario. Dan and I gave its play testing and found it to be pretty good. We make some SSR changes that were needed and played through some ways to beat the scenario. Placement of the gun is key for the British. Place it wisely. I didn't and lost my own scenario on Turn 3, when the MKII took the bridge. grumblejones
The Amy HGerman AFV quickly eliminated which stalled the assault through the center of town. Kydder
Shenam PassVery interesting situation for both sides, and a blast to play, but also quite an exhausting brain burner, esp. for the Japanese, given the two separate victory location areas and the VERY tricky lines of sight. The turn 4 Brit reinforcements are crucial and more or less guarantee that the Brit player is always in with a chance at winning, however badly things have gone before. Not so much for the Japanese, however: if the Brit OBA is available and the observer well-positioned, the British right side is hard to crack, since the Japanese have to come through the jungle and ther are many good spots for OBA barrages. In our game, a couple of Harassing Fire barrages decimated the Japanese attack on that side, and the reinforcement of that side by the Gurkhas further made it unassailable. We felt that instead of the normal balance, simply taking away the Brit OBA might result in a more balanced scenario. Houtje
Bare Foot BeatingThe Japanese favored a rear defense with strong elements blocking the reinforcement area, but executed a fine fighting withdrawal with their forward elements. The Chinese Schwerpunkt was on the right with a left wing to keep pressure on all sides. They were too aggressive initially, with their 9-1 and a squad buying the farm on a 1KIA with Yatzhee RS drs, and their 4 fanatic/AE reinforcement squads getting nicked up quite badly at the hands of the INF gun. Nonetheless, the Chinese had a decent chance to pull it off with 2 Player Turns left, but the INF gun broke 2 squads in position to advance into CC with an intensive fire shot and the Chinese conceded. Courage of CowanAn excellent scenario that could have gone either way.
I advanced too slowly at the start so that by the end of turn 3 we thought I had no chance of meeting the victory conditions.
On turn 4 my luck changed as I was able to shatter Martin’s front line and make significant progress.
Martin trapped two of my squads in melee with a half squad for three turns. This proved significant at the end as they were not in the most advantageous position going into the end games.

At the start of turn 6 I had 7.5 squads in range of the victory hexes however I had to cx across open ground. Martin rolled a 2, a 3 and a 2 on the IFT that KIAed 3 squads and put pay to any chance I had of victory.
Finished with 2 out of the 5 victory hexes I needed to win.

This is an excellent scenario that I would highly recommend.

The Doomed and the DamnedFun scenario but difficult for the attackers. Eric correctly appreciated that the lynchpin for the Japanese defence is the I7 hill, since the Japanese will have to capture at least one hex there irrespective of where they direct their attack. He put the heavy mortar there together a squad led by his best leader manning an MMG. I decided to go for it early and try to take down the MMG position. Japanese infantry and DC heroes charged the position with the benefit of some smoke cover but couldn't break the position. The Japanese made decent progress to the south but ultimately just failed to clear the southern hills. Dougban

Engineering Defeat von Garvin
The Road to WarsawA strong start from the Poles, eliminating an Armored Car and breaking several units, saw the steam run out as the Germans started to gain ground. By the time they started inflicting casualties, the dice turned on the defenders and it soon became a slaughter where nobody could rout and No Quarter was in effect.

I liked this one, though it feels like the Polish balance should be an extra squad or perhaps an LMG rather than a 1-2-7 and some extra concealment counters. Once the ? counters dry up, there's really not much to hold back the SS. Regardless, worth a play.

The Wrong Side of VictoryThis was a very enjoyable scanrio. Both sides have to mauver and even throuh it is "PTO lite by SSR" (basically only Palm trees and Kunai exist) it had this classical Japanese - British feel to it. Jolly good! asloser
Crimson SnowThe Russians concentrated their attack on two boards but they were not able to capture all victory buildings in time and have to declare a lull at the end of turn 5. The Estonians still strong turned against the Russians and helped recapture a victory building. The Russian reinforcements were able to seize two more victory buildings. But, the German reinforcements captured back another. With only 6 captured victory buildings, the Russian conceded. The scenario is tough on the Russians as time is short and the German reinforcements appear quite on the very end of the game with only a turn left to the Russian to react. lt_steiner
The Guards Counterattack GOUREAU
Curly and the BrigadierTom and I have played through 36 of the 42 scenarios in Blood and Jungle.
We fought this one down to the last turn but, Tom was unable to secure the final PB for the win. We both had a serious problem with the timing of the British reinforcements especially, the armor and it greatly detracted from our enjoyment of the scenario, If there's ever a second edition or reissue I highly recommend a serious relook

Assault on the Assembly HallIn the beginning I was concerned about having so many units with little no no S! activations, but boy did this ramp up by the time I hit the Assembly Hall. By turn 8 the Hall became a total meat grinder. By turn 10 the Hall was secured and game ended. feralhuntsman
The RavineScenarios like HS11 and this one are making finishing all the Operation Watchtower scenarios painful. I got the US in this one, and Jim gave me the balance. I hit Jim's right flank to get behind the big hill and roll up his reverse slope positions but sent some of my reinforcements at the 11oM6 hill to get those two Level 2 hexes. I took 11 Level 2 hexes, but took too many mutual elimination results in CC. A Fate [A10.64] DR in my last RPh gave Jim 21 CVP and the win. This one is a grind. Jim: My IFT DRs were lousy but being aggressive in CC and getting average HtH CC DRs was enough to win. Not a very exciting scenario for either side. dieneuner25
Villy Muss Fallen! EastThings looked pretty grim for the Germans early on. A well-placed mortar
and some accurate shooting meant the Germans were down 2 squads before
the end of turn 1. When the 9-2 and another squad went down on turn 2,
it started to look hopeless. I was even contemplating shaking hands after
turn 3.

...then the tide shifted...

A couple of missed shots by the French and a bit of luck with the OBA
meant the beginning of the end for the defenders.

At the end of the game, there was one unbroken French squad left.
The Germans had captured the village, as well as the buildings C5
and D5. One last French turn wasn't going to do anything.

My plan was to go to the French left in force as it was weakly held.
The accurate French firing scuttled that plan, and I ended up going
head on with the French, more-or-less.

It feels like there's not a lot for the French to do. Colin said he'd rate
this one a 7 or 8. I think 8 is a bit too much, as the French just seem
to have to sit there and take the pounding the Germans unleash on
them.

Worth playing once for sure.

Not Apt to Drag FeetMy Marders were deadly and killed every Sherman that was in their LOS. Having said that, I set up a Marder in T14 without LOS to the US entry hexes because I forgot that the brownish hexes are the hill hexes! Mark had bad luck with his BAZ crews who kept missing the Marders. On turn 7, I walled up around the S15 VC hex. Mark had to commit his remaining Shermans against my Marder blockers instead of Exiting them so was forced to concede. etopp

Ride Across the CaucasusThe Russians placed lighter blocking forces in the NW and NE quadrants, an MMG with Commissar (G9) in the SW, and an MMG (Y7) and HIP'd MTR (X7) in the SE. The Axis attacked heavily in the NW (Germans) and NE & SE (Slovaks), with their HMG on NE level 2 hill with 9-1. Attacks were slowed a bit by HS pickets, the MMGs, and a RoF tear by the Russian MTR. However, the NW hilltop was taken by turn 2 and the German MTR there hit almost anything in woods and within range, including 7 RoF shots against the Commissar, with a CH to boot. In turn 3, the SE Russian MTR & MMG both malf'd, and a wild race toward the VC hexes ensued with Mud hampering movement but Heavy Rain in the middle turns dampening Defensive Fire. The Russians managed to reach the VC hexes first, took Crest Status where appropriate, and nicked the Axis up a bit, but were eventually overwhelmed and conceded at the end of their Player Turn 5. Fun scenario where Russians must conduct an effective fighting withdrawal and get the set-up right. Here, they were understrength on the NW hill, failed to place their MTR there, and probably retreated a turn late - which is almost always fatal when playing a skilled opponent. Thompsonmg(MGT)

A Surprise EncounterAnother exit VP scenario (although with an optional CVP goal instead) where the outcome can almost entirely be decided on setup due to the Russians having to split their defense and the Finns having the advantage of movement, especially on the first couple of turns. Throw in better troops and you have an uphill battle that, I feel certain, must be skewed by players who did NOT know about the errata before playing and thus have misrepresented the fight that the Finns have in this one.

Regardless, it feels harsh to say that we've had few positive things to speak at length about when it comes to the Winter War. Perhaps other scenarios will get our attention and get us craving snow scenarios soon...

Cradle to GraveI was originally slated to play the defenders in this game and opted to set up the Americans well forward while the partisans started as far back as possible with the intention of falling back and making it impossible for the Germans to amass the needed CVP total for victory. After I sent out my defensive set up, Marc opined that the game was unwinnable for the Germans and conceded! I suggested that the results suggested that the scenario was well balanced and suggested that I play the Germans instead. The Partisans set up well back but the Americans didn't defend the hill in front of the village as strongly as I had in my set up. I duly ran my Panthers onto the hill to take out the two mortars that were sitting there. I incautiously allowed a German TD a shot at a Panther's side turret and it was duly destroyed in US turn one. Not an auspicious start. After that, things changed for the better. The other Panther destroyed both US TDs and survived an infantry charge that left the US defensive positions devoid of defenders and March conceded on turn three. I definitely got lucky here when the second Panther survived a DI shot and an OT assault gun survived a MOL attack but if you can't be good, be lucky! Dougban

Parting ShotsA fine example of how ASL can quickly turn in favour of the other side and why you should always play to the end. Going into the final Japanese half turn I had possession only of buildings W8 / U6 giving me 5 building VP vs 12 for the Gurkhas and I was a couple of CVP behind as well. A lucky LMG Prep was able to stun (on a 3) one of the IP Carriers and a Banzai through a couple of open Ground hexes managed to get a HS to it who in subsequent CC, with mods of -4, was able to take it out. The key though was building DD7, repeated attempts to take it through the game had foundered and the Japanese were only in possession of 1 hex vs 3 for the Gurkhas. An 8 VP swing if the Japanese could take it. Surviving OG shots I got some more guys in so it was down to CC. 3 to roll and with a couple of ambushes it was a clean sweep for the IJA racking up 5 more CVP in the process and taking Control of this key building. A most fortunate win - the odds were certainly against a Japanese victory and my opponent was cursed with stone cold dice in the final turn. It just goes to show if you can see a path to victory, no matter how slender the odds, you’ve just got to play it out and hope the dice gods are smiling on you Simonstan

Beggar LiceWell...it's a scenario. It's pretty well designed for the Americans to lose and I did. Germans have waaaay too many support weapons and a nice Fighter Bomber to play knock-knock on LAX Americans. I hung in there for three turns, before the weight of German firepower overwhelmed my weak-@%% Americans. Giving the Germans the ability to attack from two directions also really impacts whether or not the Americans have a chance. They the Fighter Bomber pretty much prevents the American reinforcements from reaching a victory location. So play this one just for fun. grumblejones

The March Madness Korean War pack is available for download at a cost of $20 from the shop.

8 scenarios, ranging from small to large all featuring the KW. Look out for an episode of IR focusing on this pack, shortly!
ROAR record importer
After too many requests from players, I've now added a way for you to import your playings from ROAR into the archive. The instructions can be found at the bottom of your My Page, but essentially requires you to copy and paste your playing records from your account page in ROAR into a spreadsheet, then from there into the input box.

Games aren't removed from your account but duplicates won't be added (duplicates check player name, scenario and dates).

Please do carry on using ROAR if you choose to do so, but this is being offered to players who'd like to consolidate their records here.
Reports and statistics
I've added a replica of the roar balance report (based on archive plays) underneath reports -> balance, on the left hand menu and some statistics charts, too.

Want to see how many games have been logged and when? Are we playing more now than we did 3 years ago? What about the year when the most scenarios were published? Or are games played with vasl more regularly than ftf?

All this and a little bit more on the statistics page (found on the left hand side under reports).
Map page and new search options
The Maps link on the left hand nav bar takes you to a maps page that provides the opportunity to search the maps via names and tags. The maps that don't have images will slowly get updated, and those who have admin rights can add tags to help scenario designers and players filter maps by a set of tags, such as Rural, City, Stream, etc.

You can update your map collection, in order to search by maps owned on the advanced search, by ticking the boxes on this page which should automatically update your map collection. The button that is on this page takes all publications that you own and adds the maps that are listed on those into your collection.

As always, a big thanks to those who help populate this data!
Map data update
The way maps are stored under-the-hood has been changed. Previously maps were simply strings of text that were split into map_strings and added to the scenario. They weren't really unique map rows, which meant that there could be duplicates with similar names, and it wasn't really feasible to do nicer things with them, like attach images to them, or work out which publications they were from.

This has changed now, and the data has been ported across to the new map objects. All that's missing is the publication->map data, ie, which publications have which maps!

For those that like to edit and update these things, it's now possible to enter the maps for each publication (by logging in and editing the publication page and adding the maps). If we can get a good set of this data we can do things like "show me scenarios that I own the maps for" and other module dependencies for scenarios.

I've not done the same for overlays, because it seems a bit more of an overhead, but in theory it would be possible, but maybe a bit too much effort.

Finally - you can now hover over the map values within the scenarios and publication pages (if the maps have been added to them yet) to see a map preview. If the map image isn't there yet, it might need updating, but the standard ones should all work - I think!
