Overview:
An ad hoc group of roughly two parachute companies under Lt. Colonel Shanley were stopped cold on their drive toward the bridge at Pont L’Abbe. They fell back to high ground overlooking the Chef-Du-Pont crossing. The key element of the position was a standing patrol in a farm and road junction, blocking the road from the west to the bridge. At dawn on June 8th, the Germans made their most determined effort to take it. . . For two days, Shanley and his men fought off repeated German attempts to overrun the main paratrooper landings and contributed substantially to establishing the Merderet bridgehead. This action has been considered decisive in helping the airborne meet its objectives at Normandy.Attacker: German (1057th Grenadier Regiment)

2023-05-04 | (D) Ken Monson | vs | Scott Mcleod | German win | Still learning rules. First time using mortars. Americans are spread really thin initially, and my defense setup was less than ideal. My mortar up on the hill was basically ineffective as the squad manning it kept breaking, routing behind hill, rallying, only to reman the position and break again. German mortar on left flank position created a new leader for me, and then battle hardened him into a hero. Turn following the heroic leader creation the German mortar scored a CH on the building the leader squad and MG were defending and wiped them all out. Germans were able to mop up the defenders in the VC buildings as the reinforcements failed to show up until turn 6. No effective assault by the Americans was possible though as none of the paratroopers remembered how to use their smoke grenades (7 attempts, and only 1 successful deployment) Turn 8 found us sitting on the hill watching our captured brothers(2 squads and 2 leaders) being rounded up and moved toward the German rear.
2022-12-17 | (A) Terrence Dorsey | vs | Solo | American win | Played original Paratrooper scenario without errata. US reinforcements did not arrive until turn 6! But in the meantime, the US mortar scored ROF repeatedly and was able to harass and slow the German advance and the sniper kept busy as well. US started out deployed into a loose perimeter around the outskirts of the farm, forcing, along with the mortar, a somewhat wary German advance, then pulled back to the farm buildings. In the end this meant that, by the time the Germans were able to assault the farm proper, they were short on time and good order squads.
2022-07-11 | (D) Kevin Sanders | vs | Adam Barrie | American win | Some good story telling mixed luck for the aggressive advancing Germans. US Mortar did nothing at all. But effective concealment and some solid melee wins help the US hold the village and win the day.
2022-05-14 | (A) Tony Fermendzin | vs | Steve Boro | German win (VASL Log) | A fun scenario where both sides get a chance to attack. The Americans were unlucky in this one, malfunctioning their mortar on the first turn. The Germans start out with quite a powerful force and were able to push up the middle into the buildings and flank the Americans to the south taking up positions on hill 621. The American reinforcements had a tough time trying to get back into the buildings as the German force with all of their MG's were able to interdict them from the hilltop. Seems tough on the Americans if the Germans can get up onto the hilltop(s).
2021-11-25 | (D) Eric Gray | vs | Scott Gray | American win | German attack stalled from the beginning under US mortar and machine gun fire. Germans were just not able to to concentrate in force and seize any of the objective buildings.
2021-09-03 | (A) manzoli andrea | vs | Galletto | American win
2021-05-06 | (A) Simon Staniforth | vs | German win | The Germans pushed hard and had the village taken in T3 with all but one HS of the at start US forces captured or eliminated. The reinforcements came on T5 so an additional 3VP but they were met by concentrated German firepower which broke or KIAd 3.5 squads during the turn and with the German force largely untouched the US player resigned. Germans helped by some low rolls / ROF in the final Prep fire phase of the game
2021-01-01 | (D) Tripp Killin | vs | Sebastian Killin | German win | My son has graduated from Starter Kit to full ASL with the playing of this scenario! (Obviously, the big changes where Concealment and Snipers.) I suggested that he should limit Prep Fire and really push the tiny American force early. He did that, wiping me out of the buildings and off the hill handily. He matched my good fire attacks with passed MCs , and broke all my squads with Advancing Fire shots (except for the one he KIA'd with a PFPh CH by the ltMTR). He had everything waiting for my reinforcements, who promptly broke like glass as they approached. I conceded on Turn 5. "This game is easy, dad." Just wait, my boy, just wait. :-)
2020-06-15 | (A) Nate Gregg | vs | Chris Gregg | German win | Part of our Paratrooper "Campaign"
2020-05-16 | (D) David Ramsey | vs | Simon Taylor | American win | Always a great scenario for newer players or those coming back into the game. This one was in the balance throughout the game and only decided by a brutal prep fire phase by the Americans on the last turns of the game when the Germans pushed hard. Could have definitely gone either way.
2020-01-31 | (A) Ken Rutkowski | vs | Bill T. | American win | The dice were definitely against me. Never rolled lower than an 8 the last two turns.
2020-01-24 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Nic | German win | A re-introduction to ASL for Nic who restarted his ASL career with boxcars, followed by a 6 on his mortar fire & repair roll, and ended by receiving an 8 down 2 shot with me rolling snake-eyes. Seemed harsh!
2019-12-15 | (A) B-E Karlsson | vs | American | German win
2019-05-02 | (A) Tom Kearney | vs | Lindsey Murillo | German win | Things started out badly for my attacking Germans and I soon found myself down 6 CVP to nothing. I kept up the pressure though, and soon knocked out the German mortar and MMG positions with help from a platoon that made and extreme flanking move. By the time the US reinforcements arrived on turn 5 I had guys on top of the hill interdicting their movement. After a few key breaks the Germans surrendered.
2019-01-17 | (D) Stephen dedier | vs | Murillo, Lindsey | American win | A tight contest with the Germans methodically driving into the paratroopers and the Americans using concealment and an active mortar to hold them at bay. The Germans finally broke through into the town and began kicking the Americans out of the buildings when the reinforcements arrived to bolster the defense. Lindsey managed to get a hero around behind the Americans which made life tough from a route standpoint and it finally came down to a CC for the last victory building. At the end of the German turn there was a melee but the Americans were able to reinforce in my turn and force the melee to continue denying the Germans the victory.
2018-11-30 | (A) Allen Evenson | vs | Arno Lebenhagen | American win | VASL PBeM. Lost too many units trying to get close enough to make PF effective.
2018-07-12 | (D) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Leoce, Joe | German win
2018-07-08 | (D) Louis Langdeau | vs | Jason W | American win | Jason's first game of full ASL! I picked this scenario to give him a sampler pack of a bunch of the rules changes, and he was more than game. His opening was pretty solid, but I was able to catch him with a weird LoS to KIA his 8-0. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but as the game went on he continued to have broken units without enough leaders to rally them. He pushed forward reasonably well, but I locked him up once he got into the woods outside the village. There, I was able to continually break his forward units when they tried to move in, and by the time my reinforcements arrived it was looking like a done deal. Jason conceded when his last ditch push was thrown back by the newly massed American firepower. A fun game to be sure! I felt like I defended a lot better than my last play in this scenario, and the dice were very kind.
2018-06-09 | (D) Louis Langdeau | vs | Andrew S | German win | Gave Andy the balance on this one, since it was his first game of full ASL. I don't think he needed it, since he was nowhere near as rusty as I thought he would be. I set up pretty far forward, with a good amount of dummies trying to keep Andy honest. I overthought my bore sighting, and neither hex came into play. Andy pushed gradually up the middle and my right flank, helped along by my MTR breaking on American turn 2, and not coming back until turn 4. I stayed too far forward for too long, and missed my chance to pull out of LoS once he was in firing positions. Andy punished that heavily, and by turn 4 when my reinforcements arrived, Andy had already seized most of the town. I didn't really have a good plan on my push with reinforcements, and it showed as Andy diced up my new troops with wild abandon. I'd like to try the scenario again some time, as I feel like I didn't give Andy a very good game of it. I definitely didn't think he'd play as well as he did after such a long break! It was six months or more since our last game, which was only SK rules. That didn't show at all, and his advance was extremely competent and well managed.

2018-01-22 | (A) Pieter Van Innis | vs | Chris Hofland | American win | Decided to split up my attacking force and never could put enough pressure on the defending units to take the town. Once the American reinforcements arrived, it was quickly over.

2015-03-26 | (A) Russell Dewhurst | vs | Steve | German win | Late reinforcements seem to make it a bit harder on the US.
2015-03-08 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Brian S. | German win | Every time I've played this one the American reinforcements are late to the party and there's very little chance of them rooting out a well-positioned German garrison, especially when their point-blank MG fire fails to deliver when needed.
2014-11-20 | (A) Seumas Hoskins | vs | German win
2014-09-18 | (A) Doug McMullen | vs | US | German win | This was a teaching game. (I was the student.) I highly enjoyed it and even won, thanks to a long streak of very favorable die rolls. I think this is a super scenario for learning. Mortars, hills, HIP, and a very interesting strategic situation with an attack and counterattack. Lots to think about, lots to learn. My attack plan was to take the hills first rather than drive straight at the village VPs, to establish SWs on the hilltops and deny the (powerful) reinforcements easy entry to the board. As it worked out on the first turn 3 (!) of my lmgs malfunctioned and I was certain I was a goner... but that was the last bad roll I saw for the next four turns. My valiant (and patient) opponent couldn't catch a break. His reinforcements arrived as late as possible (turn 6) and by that time his small initial force were mostly POWs, and I'd taken the hills _and_ the village. After a mg hit one of his reinforcement stacks on entry with snake eyes (ldr modified -- no cower) he threw in the towel.
2014-07-16 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | Steve Bond | German win | Seems to be one of the classics and is well fit as a teaching scenario for infantry and the introductionary MTR (one on each side). ROAR has it very balanced with close to 200 playings for each side. I played this as the German. Basically, the US has to hold the village on board 4. The Germans either need to take some buildings OR take at least one and exceed the US in VP (some of which may be granted if the US reinforcements arrive late). The Germans have 12 squads lead by 3 leaders and are equipped with a decent numbers of MMG and LMG along with one small MTR. Nothing fancy here. The at start force of the us is 4 paratrooper squads (one of which may HIP), 2 leaders without modifier, an MMG, 2 BAZ, and a 60mm MTR along with a dozen "?" counters and 2 Foxholes. US reinforcements will be arriving during turn 4, 5, or 6 (of a total of 9 turns) depending on a dr. These are significant consisting of 5 paratrooper squads, a MMG(dm), 4 BAZ and a 9-1. Usually, the action should play out roughly as follows: The small US defending force tries to mess up the German apporaches across rather open terrain with the MMG and MTR perched on the hills. The Germans will try to close quickly to take advantage of their superior numbers. They probably will try to crush as much of the US at start force and grab the victory buildings before the US reinforcements show up on the scene. If the Germans are quick, they might manage to establish some sort of defensive perimeter in time. When the US reinforcements arrive, it will be the Germans on the defence. They have to hold on to their buildings and watch out not to be hit by the numerous BAZ and high firepower of the US. At start much depends on the performance of the US MMG and MTR. Heaven forbid if the manage a ROF tear which could harm and slow the German significantly. Heaven forbid if they don't perform well, or worse - break. In my game, the Germans lost some significant 4HS on their approach to the central lvl 1 building and cover behind it as well as to the patch of woods that is connected to the village woods by a grainfield. I tried to avoid the MTR and MMG as much as possible. It took some time to close and then to bring the German firepower to bear at superior range. The US played quite agressively in part, trying to slow me even before getting close to the village woods with some success. Eventually, the Germans had established themselves in decent cover moving quickly when the US MTR malfed. The Germans then moved quite agressively, clearing most dummies and taking out/capturing half of the US at start OoB and breaking another quarter. A Germans HS managed to storm the US MTR position with the broken weapon and destroyed it. The US MMG position was stormed as well and the MMG captured intact. All buildings were secured as the US cursed its luck with their reinforcements not arriving before turn 6 (which did grant him 6 extra VP, though). Now the Germans had to brace themselves against the onslaught of 7 US paratrooper squads. These could be more or less held off albeit at some cost. During the last US turn (US moving last), things got a little tighter than expected as the US managed to kill 2 Germans squads and one of the paratrooper squads managed to survive no less than five -2 attacks to stand ADJACENT to one of the victory buildings held only by one German squad. Doing the math, the Germans volunarily broke that squad and a HS both threatened by CC and yielding one of the buildings to the US because that way it was not able to top the German VP tally. This brought the German win with 4 out of 5 buildings secured and a VP Tally of 19 German to 18 US. Interesting scenario that I recommend to play.
2014-06-27 | (A) leo zhu | vs | Erwin Lau | American win | Germany has stronger force and failed to impede American's reinforcement.
2014-04-10 | (A) Ralph Shoukry | vs | DS | German win | Excellent scenario, late US reinforcements helped a German victory
2014-03-01 | (D) Martí Cabré | vs | Eloi Soler | American win | A very tight and balanced scenario. Eloi deftly advanced his Germans to avoid my mortar and mg fire until close to the village. Then he pushed hard, broke all my defending units and advanced into the hills. But just in that time the reinforcements arrived and with daring moves retook the hills overlooking the village. Firefights ensued with many broken units and in the last movement of the last turn a lone HS managed to enter one of the buildings and claim it before being broken. Finally VP tally (with one turn delay of the reinforcements) was 10-10, so very very close American victory.
2014-02-06 | (A) Keith Colins | vs | Jeffery Meyers | German win
2014-01-18 | (D) Jeff T | vs | Uriah | American win | This one was quite the see-saw affair with both sides being on the ropes throughout. It started well for my Americans as the German's couldn't dislodge the mortar on the cliffs and it got several good ROF tears and broke a few squads. Slow trudge for the Germans, but once they got to the buildings area, the paratroopers started to feel it. The Germans took the initiative and got squads around the flanks to interdict the US reinforcements as their main force ground up the village and took the victory buildings. It looked bleak as the Germans moved up the hill to take on the last US resistance point blank. US reinforcements arrived on Turn 5 and in that rally phase the roll that turned the tide of the battle. The US MMG squad was DM above the mortar HS in the cliff foxhole and they rallied. They were my only good order squad after that along with the brave 8-0 leader. They ended up breaking 3 surrounding squads over the next 3 turns while the reinforcements went to work and pushed over the hills back into the village area. I had just enough left to get into one of the buildings and Uriah was forced to counter-attack to take it as I had eliminated enough of the cliff attackers to pull ahead in CVP 9-7. The MMG on the cliffs and some point blank fire from two US half-squads broke the final German attempt in the road. Great game, very tense with some good tactical moves by both sides.

2013-12-12 | (D) Daniel Soukup | vs | Jeff B | German win | Very tight game until round 5. American mortar destroyed in round 3 but reinforcements arrived early (round 4). Americans needed to be more aggressive with the reinforcements; allowed aggressive German assault to gain advantage in buildings.

2013-10-10 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Erwin Langlois | American win | It was looking bleak until American reinforcements arrived on Turn 5. One more turn and it probably would've been the other way.

2012-09-11 | (D) Lee Hyde | vs | Nick Carter | American win | First game in anger, so to speak. Started FtF and finished on VASL, although we called a halt before t8. Excellent starter for me, with good map with lots of terrain types, blind hexes, some foxholes - enough but not over loaded. Each force has small Mortars which allow some to Hit calculations without slowing the game down too much for a newbie. Pleased that as Axis my casualties were nil, more by luck than any major tactical ability.

2012-03-19 | (D) Fred Ingram | vs | Are Elandsen | American win | So we flipped the game around and Are attacked this time. A different setup and a different attack bu tthe end was the same. He was able to close without an casualties but then took it on the chin close up. He also got one victory building with huge casualties and then the reinforcements came on to seal the deal.
2012-03-19 | (A) Fred Ingram | vs | Are Elandsen | American win | The game started off badly with a 2-2 long range MMG shot getting a K/1 on the 9-1 with 2 squads and both MMG's. The 9-1 wounds way away from the action and both squads break. The other two leaders get whacked by snipers in the next fire phase and also break the units they are with. I fought on and managed to get one victory building but was about 12 points behind with the reinforcements coming on so it was a concession. What a blowout
