Overview:
In the days following Operation Spring, the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division conducted several short but sharp engagements to improve their positions. One such position was the adjoining villages of St. Andre-sur-Orne and St. Martin-de-Fontenay. The Canadians held the southeast portion of St. Andre and all of St. Martin except the church on the southern outskirts. Brigadier H.A. Young wanted the church taken. He believed the objective could be taken by a company of infantry supported by engineers.Attacker: Canadian (Les Fusiliers Mount-Royal)

2022-12-31 | (D) Jack Wilson | vs | Mark O. | Canadian win | Fun little scenario. Canadians have 9 SE trying to overwhelm the German SS 4.5 SE. Germans have to keep at least one unbroken MMC in the church building or lose automatically. The German fire was effective early and slowed the Canadian advance. But they eventually got into the building by T5, and it came down to several frantic CC. A lone German HS held out to the final CC on the final turn. Mark needed to roll a 7 or less to win the game, and rolled exactly a 7. C'est la vie! Fun game, and an excellent learning scenario: no vehicles, OBA, guns, etc. Although the Canuks had an LtMtr (malf'd and then eliminated early on) and a DC to play with. Worth a replay.
2022-11-16 | (D) David Ramsey | vs | Bill Durrant | German (SS) win | Germans hunkered down across many levels in the church but the one lone HS who broke, rallied and held up the Canadian flank attack was the star, despite berserk-charging to his death.
2022-10-09 | (D) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Slava Zipunov | German (SS) win (VASL Log) | British had bad times with fire rolls, so German defenders were able to hold the church and its approaches.
2022-06-10 | (D) Kevin Sanders | vs | Adam Barrie | German (SS) win | Really good game vs a newer player that played well. Got into the Church and almost won on last turn.
2022-03-10 | (D) Fedor Melnikov | vs | Alexey Kolleganov | German (SS) win (VASL Log) | A very intense and fast scenario. The German troops held their defenses until Turn 4, but eventually the Canadians broke through and the fighting was already ultra-short range. The outcome was unclear until the last roll!
2022-03-10 | (A) Alexey Kolleganov | vs | Fedor Melnikov | German (SS) win
2022-01-30 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Nick Faryna | German (SS) win | What a barn-burner. Came to the final turn. I had a squad as the Germans and was locked in Melee. His CC roll failed to knock me out, so I won. Barely!
2021-12-18 | (D) Steve Gibson | vs | David Wiesenhahn | German (SS) win | Canadians pushed hard on the left, but were delayed by a stubborn German squad, lmg, and hero gaurding the eastern approaches to the church. The Canadian HMG broke, then rolled a six on the repair to take it out of the fight. The Canadian killstack formed and was crushed by a really lucky roll, leading to a Canadian concession at the end of turn 4. The mortar only landed smoke on the front of the cathedral one time before rolling high and losing smoke ability, which also hurt the Canadian prospects.
2021-12-17 | (A) Vilis Pavulans | vs | Omid Mashregh-Zamini | Canadian win | Canadians got smoke on MMG-leader in the church and managed to make good progress across the open space on turn one. A smaller force went the long way around. Few Canadian losses on first two turns but got a few good hits on the germans losing a whole squad early to fire and then soon a fateful rally accident which decimated more germans. Then it was a slow advance up the church to flush out the last defenders who managed to create a hero and that lone hero killed a Canadian squad and hero in CC just before the end but the Germans had to accept defeat in turn 5.
2021-11-21 | (D) Vilis Pavulans | vs | Omid Mashregh-Zamini | German (SS) win | Hard advance for the Canadians. They did spend too much time on prep fire in midgame when they were getting close to the church in hopes of making a gap in the German defence but then the final steps in towards the church took it´s toll. In end game the stairwells were cramped on most levels by Germans refusing to let go.
2021-11-04 | (A) Liam Reid | vs | German (SS) win | A bit of a tough scenario for the Canadian, but fun. I fell behind after gaining and then losing a toehold in the church on turn 3 due to a flubbed CC roll. I managed to get into the church, but with only one turn left I couldn't clear it before the end of the game.
2021-10-29 | (A) Owen Edwards | vs | Solitaire | German (SS) win | Learning Mortars. Bit of a knife fight, with a lot of ineffectual Canadian fire and natural 2s and 3s from the Germans somewhat counterweighed by Canadian boldness and manoeuvre. Ended in a classic final half-turn CC between the one remaining German half-squad with accompanying Hero, and a Canadian 9-2 and 2x4-5-8s. Canadians failed to kill by 1.
2021-10-16 | (D) Kevin Sanders | vs | Jason Littleton | German (SS) win | Refresher game - lots of mistakes both sides. Ended with CNDs in the church but not enough umph
2021-03-27 | (A) Paul Works | vs | Tom Meier | Canadian win | I made my main attack along the left side, through the building lines on that side. I did keep a couple squads and leader on my right to keep him occupied. My mortar had no smoke (sigh..), so i was forced to do it the hard way. Tom played a nice, rotating defense; sleazing his troops back when he could. I was able to get the DC placed (!), but it had no effect. I was able to start breaking his troops which allowed me to get into the church. On the final turn, I had to rush up to the top floor to get one of units in CC while encircling his final squad on the first floor. To win, I had a 1:2 CC attack to kill that final squad. That CC was the last DR of the game and I rolled a "3" (!!). Crazy. Fun game with Tom.
2021-03-18 | (A) Grant Linneberg | vs | Bruno Javanabal | German (SS) win | Looking good for the Canadians but they left the back door open. A german unit self-rallied and made it in that back door after surviving a 4-2 2mc. Fun scen. Hadn't played it in 20+ years.
2020-12-31 | (A) Herbert Heyman | vs | German (SS) win
2020-09-07 | (D) Jason Nichols | vs | Eric Topp | German (SS) win | Canadians popped smoke on my concealed MMG on level two of church on turn one but malf'd the mortar on turn two. The German sniper took out a leader and the Canadians took a number of casualties for no loss to the Germans. Dice rolls were not kind to the Canadians and they resigned at end of turn two.
2020-09-01 | (A) Dmitry Klyuykov | vs | Fedor Grachev | Canadian win
2020-07-25 | (A) Lawrence Spangler | vs | Diane Spangler | German (SS) win
2020-07-24 | (D) Mike Whittemore | vs | Sébastien | German (SS) win | Séb and I are still learning the system so don't make the greatest choices. Séb established a ring of Canadians in the buildings surrounding the church, and I had withdrawn all units into the church. I had a lucky route/rally allowing me to tie together a strong fire group that obliterated his main force. He decided he had too many broken units to continue and conceded. One thing we agreed is that he should have been using his mortar to drop heavy smoke in front of the church, instead of lugging it around like a suitcase. That's on me since I am both learning and teaching the game. Since this scenario is so simple we agreed to play it a few more times to try to get our chops.
2020-06-24 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Paul Washington | German (SS) win | I got off to a pretty terrible start as my 2 inch mortar failed to get SMK and then switched to HE. My approach was pretty good and Paul was kind enough to have me create a hero. That said, I was unable to break into the church. I probably unwisely went to my right to try to break in; that said, Paul had an MMG covering that other approach. Great fun
2020-05-17 | (A) Michael Davey | vs | German | Canadian win | Game was in the balance going into last turn
2020-04-10 | (A) Tom Rodwell | vs | Lee Hyde-Sellars | German (SS) win | A good learning scenario to consolidate basic infantry skills. A slightly inept Canadian scheme of attack was further undone by failing get smoke with either the mortar or infantry smoke grenades. This was compounded by not bringing up the critical Vickers quickly enough. As a result Lee's very competent German defenders were scarcely troubled as the Canadians belatedly secured a toe-hold in the church but all a case of too little, too late.
2020-04-09 | (D) David Ford | vs | Dan Barnaba | German (SS) win | A series of firsts. My first Vassal game and my first losing of a scenario on the Archive. The Germans managed to stay in unbroken in the church, although everyone was in melee. Dan's Canadians came in hard from the North. They eschewed any strong flanking move and went straight for the church. He had good luck with his mortar placing smoke in the courtyard, thus covering his advance. There were several attempts to place the DC which failed until a lone HS managed to place it right in the middle of a large melee-lots of fun resulted from that! The game came down to the last two CC rolls in the last German turn of the game. The Germans managed to avoid getting killed and pulled out a close win. I really enjoyed the game and will be using Vassal much more in the future.

2019-12-18 | (D) Pascal Boileau | vs | Lionel Colin | Canadian win | A nice and fast scenario. As the German player, I had the balance but it was not enough to stop the powerful Canadian attack. Well played Lionel !
2019-11-06 | (D) Martí Cabré | vs | Lionel Colin | Canadian win | A quick game ended in Turn 5 of 6 with no unbroken German units inside the church. The attacker advanced on a wide front and got to the church with zero casualties, while the German lost a leader and a couple of units. Once inside the church the Canadians quickly broke the rest of the defenders.
2019-06-27 | (A) Doug McMullen | vs | S. Craig Zahler | German (SS) win | OOOf. What's that old saw about not underestimating the enemy? Yeah, well... Craig was playing only his second Full ASL game (transitioning from SK) but he set up like a pro.. taking slightly forward positions on defense allowing for a fall-back to the church, and he made so that I had no easy attacking routes to the church. His MG had the obvious high ground in the church and tore up my Canadians as they crossed streets or blundered into the open (including a hideous careless stack move that cost me big). The Canadian Attack got to the foot of the church and no further... they never really got traction. This one ended early and Craig got his first Full ASL win.
2019-03-30 | (D) Jonathan Kapleau | vs | Duenskie, Ron | Canadian win
2019-03-22 | (A) Alan Krause | vs | Bill Jenkins | Canadian win | Good, close match.
2018-11-10 | (D) Allen Evenson | vs | Luis Del Castillo | German (SS) win | Germans were able to skulk to center of church to limit Canadian shots - then advance to cover approaches. Used stairwells to 'cycle' concealed HS up stairs and gain concealment on ground floor units that shot previous turn. Luis conceded on finial turn during his movement - feeling that there was no way to break all the MMC still in church.

2017-11-06 | (A) Simon Staniforth | vs | Canadian win
2017-10-01 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Ed Donoghue | German (SS) win | Germans fully deployed, covered the lanes with the LMGs, and manned the walls and church with the rest of the troops. Canadians were a bit too tentative. It also didn't help that almost every roll they made involved a "6." Germans managed to maintain almost full concealment and the Canadians conceded after Turn 4.

2016-12-04 | (D) Christian Knudsen | vs | Neil Andrews | German (SS) win | Again Neil got unlucky at vital times, another win for me.
2016-10-07 | (D) Michael Rodgers | vs | Rich Fulcher | German (SS) win | I deployed all but one SS squad. Rich obtained only one smoke round from the mortar, but he used it too early. When the Canadians made their main push on the church, many were cut down in the open ground. Rich conceded after taking too many casualties.

2015-11-24 | (D) Michael Dorosh | vs | Colin Emerson | Canadian win | Lots of CC in ours, and C.E. fired on Melee stacks twice...(!) Good game, over in 5 turns
2015-11-24 | (A) Colin Emerson | vs | Michael Dorosh | Canadian win | Tons of CC, multiple squads locked in melee. A hero survived a 4-1 attack, was reinforced and next turn every one died! Canadians have greater number of troops so I accepted those losses. Fun scenario, mortar was ineffective, I dropped it and rushed the Germans.
2015-09-26 | (D) Alberto Griffa | vs | Jamey Cribbs | German (SS) win
2015-09-20 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Connor Mullins | German (SS) win | First game against my 21 year old and he wiped out my Canadians as they advanced under withering MG fire with ROF that wouldn't quit and his Sniper KIA'd my 9-2 early on.
2015-06-19 | (A) Kevin Duval | vs | Dwayne Duval | German (SS) win
2015-06-19 | (D) Dwayne Duval | vs | Kevin Duval | German (SS) win
2015-04-24 | (A) Raoul Duke | vs | DD | Canadian win | Second time I've played this one, first time as the Canadians. A rate tear by the Canadian HMG probably took a turn off the time it took me to assail the church, resulting in a win at the end of turn 5.
2015-03-03 | (D) Shawn Shifflett | vs | Matthew Evans | Canadian win
2015-02-17 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | Philipp Janssen | Canadian win | Played this one as the attacking Canadian as a teaching scenario vs. a new player. It is well suited for the purpose, as it is rated pro German (and rightly so). In this playing, the MTR managed to get down one SMOKE round, which was helpful. Probably best, to save the try for the time when you really need it and see any "extra" SMOKE round as a bonus. Of course the main diffiulty in this one is breaking all SS troopers in that large lvl. 2 church building. Even if you go into CC, the SS is still unbroken in many cases as opposed to the requirement of "Good Order" squads that are part of the VC of many other scenarios. All German units were eliminated by the end of British turn 5.

2014-11-13 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | Markus Bader | German (SS) win | I played the Canadians in this one and think that they have a tough job to do to bring this home. My approach towards the first line of resistance went well and smoothly. But the first line of houses in front of the church needs to be cleared before much further progress is to be had. My MTR never had any SMOKE and when I finally had run the Germans out of the first defensive line, the time schedule was already tight. Then I conceded after a German HS managed to break my key 9-2, 458+LMG, 458+LMG poised to strike at the Church with a 3+2 shot. This was immediately followed by another attack which resulted in a MC vs. another leader on the other side of the church which rolled boxcars and went "fate" into oblivion. Needless to say, the squad with him also broke. Game over. There is not much that may go wrong for the Canadians in this one. They must not lose time. The church is BIG, many levels to clear along with stairwells that can be blocked by bodies. Not one of my favourite scenarios I have to say.

2013-12-30 | (A) Daniel Soukup | vs | Matt S | German (SS) win
2013-12-29 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Randy Mauldin | German (SS) win | It looked grim for the Canadians until they got a toehold in the building. A dud DC and a dragged out CC prevented them from claiming a victory though.
2013-12-03 | (D) Daniel Soukup | vs | Chris C | German (SS) win | Very tough scenario for Canadians. Smoke was plentiful until Allied turn 4 when they ran out. Even with smoke, Canadians were unable to get adjacent to church or force any Germans out of the church.
2013-10-14 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Chad Cooper | German (SS) win | Without adequate smoke and facing SS troops this is too tough a nut to crack.
2013-06-02 | (A) Juhani Bonsdorff | vs | MM | Canadian win
2013-05-11 | (D) Raoul Duke | vs | MH | Canadian win | Short, nasty little fight. Canadians effectively used smoke to get in close.
2013-04-24 | (A) Russell Dewhurst | vs | Gordon | German (SS) win | Canadians claimed no casualties and didn't even get into the church.
2013-03-04 | (D) Allen Evenson | vs | Roberto Chavez | German (SS) win
2013-03-04 | (A) Roberto Chavez | vs | German SS | German (SS) win | I charged and ran out of units that could rout defenders out of the church
2013-01-12 | (A) Lee Hyde | vs | Nick Carter | German (SS) win | Fairly small deceptively simple scenario. SS have to hold the Church but outnumbered 2:1 although time is tight. Started well for my Canadians turning the SS MMG crew berserk with my first shot. Went downhill from there as despite charging across open ground they walked through a hail of lead and entered melee but would not die until they tied up 3 ful squads. Lost a game turn in getting into the church. Sniper took out my squad with the mortar so that restricted my smoke capability. SS had fully deployed so they were scattered everywhere which made it impossible to force all MMC out of the church. Great fun and certainly worth trying again.
2012-12-17 | (A) Rohan Carty | vs | Nick Kerr | German (SS) win | Canadians didn't quite use their SW effectively enough, rest of town was cleared, every in-game machine gun on each side jammed on the same turn, resulting in a canadian charge which ended with them trying to fight up the stairwells in the church which caused a melee which held up the canadians for the rest of the game.
2012-09-20 | (A) Luis Felip | vs | R | Canadian win | The game ended in a melee against the german leader alone. Canadians won in the last turn, capturing the building and three squads of prisoners.
2012-09-13 | (A) Benjamin Dale | vs | Jacob | German (SS) win | Mutual rudimentary understanding of the rules lead to an interesting game, took us a whole day to play. I managed to blow up a building with a couple of HS in and we both learned a few things about just how useful smoke can be. I love mortars.

2012-06-17 | (D) Richard Carter | vs | Mark Moore | German (SS) win | Came down to last turn. He was able to rubble an entire hex with 3 hs's on different levels and smc. I held on to church with one hs. Great game!

2010-02-21 | (A) Ian Willey | vs | James Short | Canadian win | Whittled down the Germans for little loss. Two turns from the end charged in with just about everything. With only 1.5 squads left in the building upstairs and being encircled it was over when he failed to break my HMG (yes I took it with me) a rate of 4 shots was what broke the last defence. The German Sniper was the biggest problem.
