Overview:

The North Shore Regiment had been ordered to advance toward the Rhine. Its Commander, Lt. Col. John Rowley, was known as the Good Shepherd for the long walking staff he usually carried. The regiment closed on Keppeln with the two lead companies advancing on either side of the narrow, paved road that ran into the middle of town. As they approached the innocent looking barn at the edge of town, they stumbled into a concealed German strongpoint. From the edge of town an infantry gun opened up, followed by a well-concealed Sturmgeschütz and significant crossfire of small arms. The Canadians sent in their Wasps to burn out the defenders.

2023-04-09(D) Richard Webb vs Tim Reade Canadian winIlluminating Rounds First Round Match. Neither of us had a preference for side, I rolled and got the Germans. Had that nasty choice of concentrating and getting blasted or spreading out and getting overrun piecemeal. For the Canadians, Capt Ramsey (9-1) directed 2 squad with Mgs to efficiently mow down my defenses where they stood, lowly Cpl Barker (7-0) led troops up the left with cautious panache (if that's not a contradiction in terms)
A rare moment of hope appeared when the Stug broke cover into the Canadian right, accounting for 2 Shermans send to dispatch it, but swarmed and the crew met a fiery death at the hands of the wasp. An AT mine immobilized he remaining M4, but the left flank had collapsed by this stage, and the cE1 building fell in a brutal ambush on turn 4. No way I could retake any of the 4 by that stage and failed personal morale check . A well deserved Canadian victory by Tim
2023-04-09(A) Tim Reade vs Richard Webb Canadian win

(VASL Log)
Richard and I had a very enjoyable match for round 1 of the Illuminating Rounds (VASL) tournament. My initial attack failed to lay smoke and the German defenders got in a few shots from MMG which pinned and broke a few Canadian attackers. Lucky for me the, the MG nest was taken care of in the AFPh with a critical hot ATT from one fo the Shermans. After that, despite a brief and deadly AFV battle, the Canadian infantry rolled up the german defenders. My strategy was to get the 3 VC buldings on the Canadian left with an infantry shwerepunkt, and then proceed to take the front building for the victory - ironically, the appearance of the Stug provided the perfect reason to redirect some forces for that outcome. A bad bay for the tankers, but a good one for the Canadians overall.
2023-04-06(D) David Ramsey vs Richard Dagnell German win

(VASL Log)
Richard's bold attack didn't come off, but he gave it a good try.
2023-04-03(A) Simon Staniforth vs Paul LeggA Canadian winIlluminating Rounds tourney Rd1. We both wanted the Germans so a dr and I got the Canadian attacker with balance - an additional Sherman V which felt very significant given how well stocked these tanks are with smoke generating capability. Most of the at start on board infantry went down the German right with the reinforcing 9-2/squads supported by some HS going for building cE1. Wasp was key in this game getting 4 shots away, 24FP flat, breaking a squad every time. The German StuG came out of Concealment but managed to malf both it’s MA and CMG in the same fire phase. We both had a string of boxcars but they certainly hurt my opponent more and the 4 VC buildings were secured in T4.
2023-04-03(D) Paul Legg vs Simon StaniforthA Canadian win
2023-03-11(D) Asad Rustum vs Steve Slunt German winFirst round of Illuminating Rounds tournament. Defence focused on the three buildings on the German right flank. The Canadians had a miraculous streak of boxcars and lost almost three squads to them. To add insult to injury, the Wasp X:ed its flamethrower in turn 2.
2023-03-10(D) Douglas Leslie vs Tom Repetti German winFirst round of Illuminating Rounds tournament against bon viveur, raconteur and wit, Tom Repetti,. As the Germans, I opted to put most of the defenders at level two in order to reduce the threat posed by the Wasp FT. The Canadian attack concentrated on the German right flank but was not helped when the Wasp ran out of gasoline for its flamethrower on Turn two and a Sherman MA malfunctioned. Add in a ridiculous four consecutive drs of “1” for German sniper checks and it wasn’t the Canadians’ day. Tom was a pleasure to play against and never complained about the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that went against him.
2023-03-05(A) Dave Mareske vs Tuomo Lukkari Canadian winFirst round of the Illuminating Rounds Tournament. Nice fast game. The defense unhinged when a Canadian squad went berserk, charged through a minefield and entered the hex of the German position. After that it was slow progress with good use of Smoke and passing Canadian MCs.
