Overview:

From the very beginning of the invasion, Polish defenses had proven to be woefully unprepared for the German onslaught. The blitzkrieg tactics employed by the German armored columns allowed great territorial gains in just a few short days. As the panzers raced across the Polish countryside conducting their breakthrough-and-pincer maneuvers, it ultimately fell upon the German infantry to mop up areas of bypassed Polish resistance. One such operation occurred in the farm community of Pabianice, just outside the city of Lodz. As the German Eighth Army advanced along the eastern and western flanks of Lodz, the grenadiers of Die Leibstandarte were sent into Pabianice to clear out its staunch garrison.

Unfortunately my push through the center got mauled, and without proper support and coordination my gains along the eastern and western edges fell apart. A tough fight for the Germans.

2024-06-17(A) Jobbo Fett vs JobboFettA German (SS) winThe Germans managed to win, mostly because the squad (and leader) with the Polish MMG went berserk and abandoned their excellent post to get murdered in close quarters. The Poles were massive leaders in the head-to-head knife fights by comparison, and it wasn't until the last (extra) turn where the Germans rushed the last Polish MMC and successfully eliminated them thanks to the -2 Leader in particular. A good scenario, but definitely needs German balance, and maybe something better than just an extra turn.

2023-03-27(A) Craig Renier vs Mark Thompson Polish winDespite taking little risk, the Germans were cut down on the first 3 turns, losing 2 1/2 squads and a leader before Turn 3. The Poles followed this up by breaking the German 9-2 leader and 2 MMCs with MGs on Turn 3. The Germans pressed on, a now tiny flanking force moving around the Polish left and a paltry strike force pushing up the right. Finally having closed the distance, the Germans were able to make some attacks. The Poles were slowly whittled down and the Germans scratched their way forward. On the final turn, the last two good order Polish MMCs were surrounded in the stone building. But, on the RPh, a broken Polish MMC within the 2 hex radius rolled snakes, the only possible roll to rally. With no German unit in LOS, the Germans had no choice but to concede.

(VASL Log)		The Polish MMG/8-1 in Level 1 of Building 07 severely attritted the German's flanking force to the East and blunted the German's Schwerpunkt in the West with RoF tears and hot dice, eliminating the 8-0 and breaking the 9-2 leaders, respectively. When the MMG malf'd, accurate long-range inherent from Level 1 of 07 and 008 further stymied the Western thrust. By mid-game, the Germans began to turn both flanks, with the Poles retreating the village, with several DM'd, FTR'd, or No Quartered. The Poles entered their Player Turn 7 with the one remaining GO MMC in O7 facing enormous FGs and long odds of remaining intact, but a leader rally and freak HoB rally by a HS just outside the village but within 2 hexes of N8 sealed the game. An absolute nail-biter than would likely not have been this close absent the Poles' hot dice in Turns 1 and 2.

I had a pretty fair defense set up for my little walled garden but was unable to attrit the onrushing Hun hordes to a sufficient extent to warrant extending the game to its inevitable Close Combat bloodbath. Conceded after the 5th turn. Thanks for the game Andy…safe trip back to Oz!!
2022-05-16(A) Owen Edwards vs Solitaire German (SS) winWent down to functionally the last roll of the German DFPh, as the MMG managed to keep ROF, and, firing down from the First Floor of one of the village buildings, broke the last Polish forces in their trenches in the village centre. It was generally a tale of steady German advance, managing to take a number of prisoners and generally get the better of 50/50 results, but staved off by a strong Polish position near the objective. The Polish still nearly pulled it off, though, as one DM unit in the village HOBbed on the final RPh - only to go Berzerk!

The Germans took got a kill stack in the woods on their left, and with good ROF rolls and great fire grouping were able to systematically neutralize my forces on both sides and in the first floor of the farm building. My rolls didn't help. Really great game, with a great opponent.

Multiple 4 down 3 shots added up quickly, and he decided to call it on Turn 5 to try again another time. Looking forward to more games with Connor!

The reduced Polish force tried falling back to the victory zone but the Germans, essentially still at full strength, were able to swarm the last defenders. It still came down to the final turn to decide it. Fun little scenario.
2019-09-03(D) Vilis Pavulans vs Tim Hundsdorfer Polish winA memorable shootout across the grain fields of Poland. The german troops were near the goal in the end but despite the poles losing one leader into a berserk frenzy in turn two they managed to hold firm in the victory area.
2019-03-07(A) O Ramaille vs Javanabal Radjah German (SS) winFirst FtF play using VASL. The Polish decided to strongly defend the building area by retreating the advanced units. The German attackaed in two groups. The main one along the South border reached the woods without suffering any loss. A small group advanced along the North border to distract the defenders and eventually surround them. The German direct assault was quite successful and they took hold of the main building in CC. With several routed units and the German firmly holding the area, the Polishes conceded the game at the end of turn 5.

2018-11-28(A) Jeff B vs Mark Peak Polish win4.75 hrsMark played a fine defensive game, not shooting until he saw the whites of my eyes (and even then sometimes not). It certainly didn't hurt the cause any that two Polish squads didn't shoot less than "5" all day and that German MCs were lousy. He had just the right feel for when to withdraw and reposition too, not always an easy task. In the end the Germans still had a sliver of a chance, but a key Polish SR allowed them to sneak a MMC into the winners' circle by surviving a 6+1 unpinned, which they did.

My Germans had hot dice and managed to push through the cornfield and into the complex and captured four Polish squads at the end. One German 4-6-8 was KIA'd moving into the complex, but the rest of the German force took control of the complex for the win.
2018-05-10(A) Scott Sherer vs David Langley German (SS) winDefinitely pulled this out out by the skin of my teeth, getting the victory in the Polish CCPh of the final turn. Started off well enough for the Germans as they overran some of the trench outputs early on. However, the Poles weren't eliminated and the broken units routed through the sunflowers back to the victory area and eventually rallied. A single tough Polish squad in Q3 stood up to several high-FP German attacks and held up the right flank of the German for at least a couple of turns before finally succumbing in CC. At the start of the German Turn 6, things did not look good, but then a string of fortunate events turned the tide. The biggest was probably advancing a 248,9-2 into CC with a 457 out of desperation. The HS survived into melee, I shot into the hex in the Polish Turn 6 DFPh and broke the 457 and then eliminated him on a 1-2(-6) CC attack. This opened up the left flank and was able to get enough Germans into the walled compound to eliminate the rest of the Polish MMC via FTR or CC. An enjoyable scenario and a very good learning scenario as David is a newer player and this one allowed a good focus on infantry tactics and mechanics.

2017-12-06(A) Jeff B vs Roberto Alesse German (SS) winEvery single time I play this as the Germans it comes right down to the bitter end. The Polish MMG did its job breaking and suppressing the Germans, eliminating the 9-2 at one point with a fatal wound. Germans rushed through the fields and, once within normal range of the Poles, crawled through, slowly whittling away at the defenders. On the last Polish turn the Germans managed to break the one remaining squad standing in the village and one trying a desperate charge to get within the perimeter. Great game.
2017-11-25(D) Jeff B vs Shane Woyak Polish win4 hrsThings did not bode well for the Germans early when they lost two squads and the 8-1 to a random selection KIA shot. The 1st level MMG would continue to suppress them (or worse) throughout the remainder of the game. Poles played a relatively strong up front defense, keeping concealment as long as possible. Once they lost it they kept at arm's reach from the Germans and slowly whittled them away while making a successful fighting withdrawal. By the end of the day the Germans didn't have much left. Did I mention my dice were quite hot and his were quite cold? That always helps. My first FTF game in probably 20 years! Great to have Shane over and look forward to more.

Jeff's dice were pretty hot, and that darn Polish MMG was on-target! Looking back, I think maybe trying to spearhead through the grainfield might have given me a better chance than spreading out along the front.
2017-09-05(A) Jeff B vs Pierce Mason German (SS) win3.5 hrsAgainst some of the longest odds in my ASL career, my Germans pulled off a miraculous victory on the last turn. Needing to account for 6 Polish squads and both leaders, my Germans bravely charged the complex. Facing multiple 1:2 and 1:4 CCs, they tied up or eliminated all but one Polish squad going into the last half turn. Still facing overwhelming odds in two of the CCs, the Germans gambled and shot into the melees with mixed results, meanwhile breaking the lone Polish squad that was not in melee. Against unlikely odds again, the Germans hung in there for the victory. One of the most exciting ASL games I can remember playing.

The Germans advanced aggressively putting the Poles under severe pressure - slightly relieved when the Polish MMG went on a rate tear during a prep fire phase causing multiple breaks and leader losses - but the Germans didn't care and swarmed through the middle wheatfields before close assaulting the compound - some really bizarre CC results with both side creating, and losing, leaders in short succession! The Poles just hung on though with one squad sneaking back into the VC area on the last advance phase. Great game :)

I pressed every opportunity to break them and advance at the same time. Luckily I did not have many losses and at the last turn I managed to break the three squads that remained in the victory area. German victory!
