Overview:

The Allied approach to Monte Cassino was agonizingly slow. The commanding heights gave the Germans superb observation and fire positions. In the valleys, small rearguard groups ensured that each hamlet had its price in blood. The Irish Brigade’s attack on Sinagoga was preceded by a full divisional bombardment. Soon after the barrage lifted the “Faughs”, named after their battle cry, “Faugh a’ Ballagh”, stormed the shattered village. The bombardment had knocked out all of the defender’s mines and fixed antitank weapons, as well as spilling mounds of stones from Sinagoga’s buildings into the town’s narrow streets. The German troops and armor, however, were left unaffected. . .
Attacker: British (38th (Irish) Infantry Brigade and 16/5th Lancers Regiment, 26th Armoured brigade, 78th Infantry Division)

2024-06-20(A) Craig Renier vs Gary Fortenberry German winDefinitive German win. The Brits made a bit of progress through Turn 2, despite have one leader wound on a rally attempt and one MA malf on a smoke attempt. But, on Turn 3, the German MMG went on a rate tear taking 9 consecutive shots leaving 2 1/2 broken squads after 5 failed MCs. This was followed by a German sniper killing the Brit 9-1 leader. By the end of the RtPh, the broken Brits were eliminated for FTR. With the Germans still solidly placed in the first line of buildings, no losses and little threat from the Brits, the Brits conceded.

2023-11-02(D) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne DuvalD British winBrits got around & Encircled half the defenders, quickly taking prisoners as they broke. Lone AFV took out two Churchills before Gun disabled. Barely held on to two last buildings for three Turns until falling in Turn 6.

2023-07-13(D) Yuqi Xiong vs wf German winMy JgPZ IV was stunned by British infantry fire, and soon knocked out in CC, very painful. But my PSK managed to ambushed a Churchill trying to flank my stunned JgPZ.
Wf did push hard, but by turn 7, some of my little forces successfully rallied and sneaked into some VP locations behind British.
2022-12-12(A) David Garvin vs Nick Faryna German winInsane game. Lots of ASL action in this one.
2022-07-15(D) Tuomo Lukkari vs Jarkko Autio German win
2022-07-11(A) Andy Goldin vs Jamie Montgomery British winHUMAN WAVE 2022. A nail-biter of a game against Jamie's Germans, made possible in part by a AFPh critical hit on his JgPz and his malf'd PSK. It was slow going at start as I was probably too cautious approaching the town, losing time. I chose to attempt to flank his position from my right, around the town, while pressing on the left. Prolific use of Churchill MG fire and smoke, smoke, smoke from the MA and SM helped suppress or neutralize his prolific MGs while my infantry closed to break or CC those who wouldn't flee. There were a lot of ups and downs; just when the situation looked dire for me I'd break a key German squad or vice versa. The game ended with my Irish grabbing the last unoccupied building while winning one of two CCs I needed for the win. Very close game and fun playing with Jamey again!
2022-06-27(D) Alex Ashton vs Martin Barker German winContinued my learning with Martin. Was able to inflict significant damage to MB’s British squads by retaining ROF with my AFV.
The dice rolls were good to me and I was able to hold on to two buildings defended in strength and also send one squad behind Martin to retake buildings he had occupied.
MB resigned on turn 7 as had no chance of winnning
2022-01-28(A) Dave Mareske vs Craig Renier British winThe Irish got lots of smoke and made the Germans retreat rather than fight. The allies kept their tanks out of the way of PSK, PF and the SP gun, but eventually lost one tank and another to a bog check, but eventually swarmed over the German defense to capture the necessary buildings.
2022-01-14(A) Craig Renier vs Peter Dunn German win

(VASL Log)
The Irish attack made good use of smoke during the initial assault, maneuvering a heavy force on the German right with a flanking force sprinting to the left. However, an early mistake placed an AFV within striking distance of a German HS with PSK. The Germans did not let the opportunity pass leaving the Churchill a burning wreck. The Irish pressed on making good progress. The Irish suffered steady casualties without inflicting any in kind on the Germans. The German HS with PSK, now with a Hero due to HOB, took out another Churchill before finally succumbing to superior forces. The Germans carefully fell back while the Irish were regularly Pinned, slowing the advance while the Jagdpanzer IV wrecked the last Churchill. The outcome seemed certain when the Germans made an error skulking out of a VC building relinquishing control to the Irish. With few forces remaining on Turn 7, the Irish captured the final required buildings for victory, but needed to hold them to the end of the Game Turn. The Germans counter attacked, retaking an undefended building while smashing the Jagdpanzer IV into a building with an Irish MMC and leader, followed by a German MMC and leader. The CCPh ended in Melee. The Irish made a last desperate charge, surviving DefF, and entered into CC in an attempt to again take control of the 6th building. At the end of the Allied Turn 8, there were two Melees which would determine the victor. The Germans had the upper hand, only needing to win one. But the CC odds were slightly in the Irish favor. The Germans tried and failed to reinforce a Melee. In the final CCPh, the Germans rolled low, regaining control of the mistakenly lost building. The Irish won the other CC, but it was no matter. The Germans secured the Victory.
2020-05-02(A) Andy Bagley vs Carl Roberts British winThis looked for the British at first because they need to cross almost the whole length of the board to capture the buildings he needs for victory. However, I managed to outmaneuver the Germans by keeping out of the way of his JgdPzIV and - most significantly, by using Smoke from my Churchills. Their smoke mortars are really useful in close street fighting.
