By the fourth day of Operation Cobra, it was obvious to the German High Command that their forces were on the verge of being surrounded. They ordered the front line units to break out from the evolving pocket by moving south-east towards Percy. Near La Pompe, a column of armor from the 2nd SS Panzer Division, supported by infantry from two companies of the 6th Fallschirmjager Regiment, ran into an outpost of the 4th Infantry Division manning one of these road junctions with M10 tank destroyer support. The armor and the paratroopers quickly overran the small outpost of Americans, who were forced to fall back along the road to a field where the 778th Armored Field Artillery Battalion had its M7 “Priests” set up to provide indirect fire support. The “Priests” lowered their guns, and along with the remnants of the infantry, engaged in a pitched firefight with the panzers.

I set my US SMC/MMC up in 17P2 and S4, HD AFVs in 17P4, Q4, R1, R6 and S6 plus tripwire HS in 11I6, T10 and Z10. In GT1, I pushed the 8-0 and 667 into 11N10. The M8s in the 17I4 orchard threatened passing StuGs with rear shots. Jim's attack hit both flanks. In GT2, I sent the M8s to take on HTs but a StuG torched one, so I pulled the other back. Jim quickly dealt with the tripwire HS, but the N10 stack slowed him down and he was stymied by lack of turret hits as my HD AFVs killed his HTs. Once he cleared the N10 MMC to delay my reinforcements, the tide turned. I got a StuG before HEAT ran out but StuGs started hitting and 548s closed in with PFs. His 548s took a beating from the M16 but won melees in R6 and S6 to take the crossroads. Turns 6 and 7 got wild when I slipped four HTs through 17T9 into the VC area. I ended with one GO HT in motion in 17U3 but Jim had exited a HT, 9-1 and MMC for the exit VP before my HTs entered, so we concluded that IMMEDIATELY in the VC gave him the win. Jim: This one is a true nail-biter, frustratingly fun for both sides. Good scenario that both sides need turret hits to win, but that's ASL.

A nice scenario with many toys. As the German player, I tried to delay the American reinforcements on turn 6 and I failed short by 1 MMC... Therefore, I rushed towards the victory zone on turn 4 and a bitter fight ensued (I lost 3 AFV). At the end of turn 5, no good order American MMC was close enough to R4 and I have a boulevard for exiting enough units according to the VC at turn 6.

I thought this would be a boring vehicle-heavy scenario, but I was definitely wrong. I let the Germans make the hills uncontested, but the fireworks started early, with me losing two Priests and saving another with some smoke. A lone German HT in the east was fried by an M8. Lots of burning vehicles in this one. Turn 2 saw me fry another HT on the hill with a sneaky shot, while my men tried their best to stand their ground on the Board 11 edge to fulfill the rather interesting reinforcement requirement. Without early help I don't think the Americans stand a chance. Turn 3 saw me lose my best vehicle to a PF, but I was able to position my one remaining Priest and two remaining M8s in very good central positions. This would all go to shit when the German sniper recalled two of them the next turn, and I finally lost my meatchopper who was duking it out on the front line. My reinforcements were setting themselves up for a stand amidst the southcentral bocage. They would fry a rogue StuG with a broken MA that had been hiding out here, and I got lucky and knocked out another with a CH from my last Priest. This crew accounted well for themselves, also eliminating the German PSK and HS who was toting it. They would finally succumb to a StuG on the following turn. But by this time the Americans were just too well positioned in the bocage, and when the last ditch German effort to reach them all failed the Americans held on for the victory. Very fun scenario, that most likely will play very differently every time.

A fun scenario with lots of different and unusual vehicles. The American defense is hard and they have to slowly retreat but try to keep troops on the road to allow for the early reinforcements. Germans can overrun the American position and exit the vehicles for the EVP but the fight for the crossroad is difficult.

Very fun scenario. American defense need to ensure mutual fire support or be overwhelmed. The OT AFVs are vulnerable to all sorts of fire.

Great game. Managed to prevent the US reinforcements entering on T4 and it was all over by T4. Interesting game though.

Interesting scenario. I had the defending Americans. Much in this game depends on whether the Americans can manage to have one GO MMC within 3 hexes of the specified road - having the US reinforcements enter on turn 4 and not 6 (of 6.5 turns) makes a huge difference. My defensive strongpoints were around K7, O9, and W10. The German attacked on the eastern flank ignoring the western flank. Managing to place any SMOKE he wanted, he effectively blocked my LOS by +6 hindrances from the O9 area overlooking the level 1 hill mass in the east and was thus able to quickly swamp my defences around W10. A HOB + hero creation in V10 made matters worse for it cut my way of retreat. Meanwhile, I had reinforced teh 56W3 enclosure with the M16, a Priest and an M8 along with some infantry. All these vehicles could accomplish was to break 1 squad and 2 HS before being turned into burning wrecks. I lost another 667 in CC, my sole survivors were another 667+7-0 in the enclosure surrounded by about every German in creation. Meanwhile, my other M8 had been recalled due to a sniper result while I had only destroyed one of the attackers StuGs. At the end of turn 2 the situation looked grim and I saw no chance for my Americans. But I have learned not to break on a PMC and carried on. The US heroes of the day were to be found in the form of a lone 667 in CC in 56X3 that managed to kill two German squads along with his 9-1 that he impatiently sent in to reinforce his guys together with a squad. Besides that, he fired into the melee about half a dozen times neither breaking my or his squad. With his 9-1 out, he had only one 8-0 leader left which made the situation dangerous for his infantry. Eventually, my last remaining strongpoints were the P2 and R5 enclosures manned by 1.5 sqds + MMG + BAZ + 9-1 + Priest and M36 + Priest respectively, the latter malfing & repairing its MA and suffering recall after being stunned twice. At long last, my defence crystallized and I was able to pin two of his squads preventing a large FG. I entered my reinforcements on turn 4 as infantry partly rushing into the area of the soutern central woods and partly into the area of 56U10 to threaten no less than 3 of his ht's pressuring the R5 enclosure. With some fancy WA juggling, I could prevent the German from firing PFs to the flank of my M36 thus keeping it alive and managed to kill one 75mm ht in CC while the other 2 ht's were put into some disorder by the BAZ threat. The next turn saw a hard German push across the R4-V6 road while my reinforcements were not yet fully in position. I managed to break 2 HS, kill off a unit with a CH of the Priest and to kill a StuG by underbelly hit. Thus at the end of German turn 5 my opponent conceded as it would have cost him some time to regain his footing while my reinforcements would have had time to get into position. Both sides had some serious hot dice from turn 3 to five both averaging around 6.6.

Really a good scenario and a great game. I think the key to win this scenario for the Germans is to clear fast the board 11 road in order to delay the US reinforcements. That give me a lot of time for clear the victory zone and exit the VP.

Eliminating the Americans from the road restrictions delayed the reinforcements. 2 vehicles exited on turn 4 and on turn 5 I was able to surround and destroy the remaining forces in the victory area for the win.
