The American hand had closed about Aachen. But the city fell slowly. Street by street, then house by house, the GIs squeezed out the Germans. Finally, the Wehrmacht headquarters in the Hotel Quellenhof was in sight. The massive hotel structure proved impervious to direct 75mm fire from supporting Shermans. As the GIs launched their first assault, Colonel Corley called on a self-propelled 155 for direct fire support.

The Americans have LOS to almost every decent location the Germans can setup in. With no initial concealment, this puts the Germans in an almost untenable position. If the Germans aren't careful, the Americans have enough latitude where they can situate some of their force to move in concealed, while the rest sit back and soften up the defense. Even still this scenario is so tiny that lucky dice one way or the other will immediately tilt the balance. For the Americans this will usually mean King Kong, while the 10-2 is the key for the Germans. The Germans will eventually face upper level encirclement and, unless the aforementioned luck is on their side, it will be curtains for them. Our match was over by the middle of Turn 2.

Being that our first playing of this was over in less than a hour, we decided to switch sides as I had a German setup all set to go. The Germans must balance manning the front line with defenders while, at the same time, keeping a reserve (hopefully concealed). I think a HMG should be placed in each of the two buildings, preferably in positioned that can be re-manned. Germans managed to bag the American 8-0 with a mortal wound, while the 10-2 became heroic. King Kong missed. It was a promising start. Turn 2 saw the American make their way into the main building, but their brethren across the street were busted up, leaving them without flank support. Turn 3 saw them storm the secondary stone building, while the units in the main building made it to the foot of the stairwell. Some lucky German fire severely rebuffed them (killing 1.5 squads), and it was back to square one. On Turn 4 the Americans advanced into CC with a concealed German squad, failed to kill him, and were held in melee. With no supporting force in position to fire on F6 the game was over with the Germans hanging on for the tough victory.

I needed a reminder on VASL. Allen took the Germans and let me loose. The US swept around the main objective then pushed in from the back side. There was nowhere to rout for the Germans, eventually.

Played as a little tutorial to the German player. German deployed too wide and I had good prep fire, soon breaking most of his units. Some Americans broke during the advance but they rallied quickly and in Turn 3 I could break the rest of the German units in Advance Fire. Fun, tense and full of decisions to make.

Played twice - both times US got into VP building quickly and won fairly easily. German MG placement and DRs critical. One misplaced MG and a CH by the M12 doomed defense. Good tutorial scenario!

Poor first turn prep no damage at all to Germans. Opponent hid behind building so tried to rush. Couldn't pass an MC. Broke the M12 MA
