The armored forces were committed on the second day of Operation Cobra, and 2nd Armored Division made significant gains. The following day the armored forces were racing through the German rear lines, as they had been given the directive “speed over caution”. The 2-22nd Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Division was part of TF 2-66. On 27 July they initially met little resistance other than a couple of isolate pockets, and Canisy was abandoned by the Germans. The advancing Americans met some stiff resistance after passing through le Mesnil Herman. German infantry was hidden in the bocage and two Panther tanks awaited their prey.

I lost two Shermans to hidden PSKs and a third to a lucky Panther shot but got to the victory buildings in time to seize all of them, driving away his infantry. A chancy 'sleaze freeze' of his concealed HMG allowed me to surround and capture the squad, which withered at my point blank firepower. I even managed a lucky kill a Panther in CC on the last game turn. Unfortunately he left a HIP HS on the upper level of Q7, and I didn't think to clear the building by declaring a "mopping up" so he eked out a win..

The first four German sniper checks resulted in three "1" and a "2". This resulted in the decollation of three tank commanders and a small "stun" for another. In the end, a platoon of tanks went home short one head each, another tank returns to base with a malfunctioned MA, one was burning and the last was a wreck. The American attacked refocused on the village. The last turn saw three CC attacks. The Americans needed all three to win. The 9-1 leader was unable to evict the German vagrants and the other two didn't matter.

Enfilade 2019. Came down to last tun. Stewart was ready to call the game the turn before, but decided to play it out. It payed off. I lost by one point when a crew pinned and squads and a half squad next to the exit hex failed to rally. Stewart went on to win the tournament. Close, enjoyable and fun game.

Chris had a great defensive setup which I approached with Americans on both flanks, heavier on the western side by the exit hex. He defended generally along the "J" hex line, with a Panther and infantry forward and his second Panther back by the P6 building and roadblock.
I lost three Shermans to get a penetration (two to Panther fire, one to a hidden PSK) but managed to open up the western side of the board. He malf'd his remaining Panther's MA and I drove for the exit. Sadly I malf'd the MA of one of my Shermans taking a potshot and no longer had the VP needed for the exit win, so I focused on the main building. Shrewd play, in the form of his last hidden HS, and effective MG fire by Chris prevented me from entering the building on turn 5. Supported by smoke and tanks, I got in the building on turn 6 but his broken units on the upper level denied me control of the building, resulting in a win for the Germans.

One panther went down to a Sherman swarm. The other malfed its MA and recalled on German turn 3. Americans win on exit VP on turn 5 against rusty German players.

This is probably the tenth or so game between us two as we get to meet up in the Milwaukee area at various ASL get-togethers. I probably have a small lifetime win edge over Rick – and we always seem to have a great time. He came in on both flanks, but heavy (4 vehicles and 70% of infantry) on my left flank which contained the area for the exit VC. I had a panther in L8 to blunt this move a bit with hidden half squads around him for a little extra protection. We traded shots on turn 1 & his turn 2 prep with no damage to either side. On my turn 2, I decide it is best to back up and reposition the panther since it was apparent he could blow by me with the tanks and at best I might be able to take out only 2 assuming no rate of fire (2 tanks and a small gaggle of infantry off the board would assure the win for him). So, I announce a startup in reverse and immediate roll a 12 invoking a stall (which was for 11 MP due to the follow-up roll). I no longer had enough MP to actually get out of the hex so I was stranded. Not too bad a position since I could still kill Shermans. As defensive fire, he announces a bazooka shot from 3 hexes away. His shooter is in +3 smoke, there are 2 orchards between us, and I am hull down. 16 TK with 16 turret armor seemed pretty darn safe until he rolled snakes with a subsequent 1 dr for the improbable critical hit. Just a burning panther left after that debacle. So the rest of my movement phase was frantically spent moving infantry over to that end of the board to use the panzerfausts and the 2 schrecks that I had in my OB. I was a little worried he might switch his attack and swing in towards the alternate victory buildings. As it turned out, he was pretty focused on the exit VC. So he moves forward down the board on the following 2 turns and swings the tanks that were on my right flank back down around the board to follow his others on my left flank. I get a tank or 2 with the infantry, but it was apparent I needed to move the other panther down there to plug the gap. Unfortunately that meant another stall roll (which I passed), then a turn in woods for a bog check (which I passed) then exiting from the hex in front of another bazooka 2 hexes away with a side shot. He takes the shot, misses and I am able to get the panther into a good position. I was able to get 2 more tanks. But Rick was able to get his required 2 tanks, some infantry, and a couple prisoners off the board on the last turn for the win.

Very tight game. Ed had to get one tank and a few squads off the board for the win. He used sM to hinder his tank moving off the board, but my Panther (the only unit left) was able to secure a hit and blaze it. This made it easier for his infantry to get off as there were 2 hexes with smoke. As they poised to move off, I got SNAKES for the TH roll (random selecting the leader for the CH) and a 3 on the IIFT effects roll, killing the leader and breaking all the others Very enjoyable even if I would have lost.

Fun game - good balanced forces for both sides. Thought I was in trouble when first 2 shots by opponent resulted in tank wrecks. But bringing all troops to bear eventually overwhelmed the defense.
