The key to the initial assaults on the Cotentin Peninsula was the town of Carentan. Control of this vital town of approximately 4000 people would allow Utah and Omaha beach to be securely joined. At approximately 0530 on 12 June, elements of the 101st Airborne under the command of artillery commander Brig. Gen. McAuliffe deployed for the attack scheduled to start at 0600. The initial assault instantly bogged down with well-sited machine gun fore pinning the paratroopers along the road into Carentan, but company commanders rallied their troops and quickly grabbed a foothold in town. Now came the difficult task of capturing the town as well-trained paratroopers began clearing building by building.

This scenario suffers from being balanced on paper with no regard to terrain effects. Attacking a village of stone buildings is incredibly hard and skews balance by a lot. Two powerful stacks of Germans can lock down all avenues of approach. There needs to be a SSR for not stacking Germans or more American units and SW.

Game 2. Germans engaged early and were nearly flanked by the US reinforcements. Good dice rolls, falling back and a short turn count, lead to German victory in the lower portion of the town.

Germans setup mostly in VP buildings covering both approaches. Americans moved in with stacks a little too close and broke early on the west side. On the east side, Americans walked into artillery which gave a pounding and pushed them back. One of the German HIPs were lying in wait in the VP building on the north end, which the 10-2 and two squads walked right into and ended with a 1KIA killing the leader, the squads losing the LLMC, then suffering casualty reduction. The final fire in the DFPh finished off both broken half-squads.

The Germans set up most of their squads, leaders and SW in the VP buildings with the 4-4-7 out covering the western flank and the two half squads HIP. The artillery was sighted along the road in hopes of catching the Americans in the open. The Americans ran into a hidden half-squad on the first turn as a few fortunate shots by the Germans broke up the American attack early. The Americans had trouble getting reorganized, as they continued to break under German fire, while the Germans continued to pass every MC they had to take. A late push by the Americans got them into the VP buildings but it was too late as they ran out of time before they could clear the Germans out of all the necessary buildings. Fun scenario. Small but tense as neither side really feels like they have enough resources to get the job done.

First game against fellow DC Conscript recruit Keith Hiljus. After a reset on the initial set up (No, Jon, you DON'T get to HIP your entire force) the game began with a strong American push down the west side of the town. The vast majority of his force was stacked up in a building when I called in the first of my three pre-planned artillery strikes (on 2 different locations per SSR) that broke about half of his entire force. The second arty strike was not as successful, and by the end of turn three, his entire force was rallied and surrounding my far western strongpoint in the VC area. After my squad/LMG/leader stack was surrounded and vaporized, the Yank paratroopers advanced in great strength...into my next pre-registered artillery strike hex. Good rolls for me, and exceptionally poor rolls for Keith, and 4 out of his 6 747 squads were DM. I had one of my HIP units reveal to seal off one rout path, advanced two more units to a couple of more rout paths and 2 squads gone for failure to rout. One more turn of back and forth, but he realized he didn't quite have the force necessary to clear the VC area. Lady luck favored me this time, but completely deserted my opponent, Keith played much better than the outcome indicates.

The American decided to concentrate their assault on the east side of the town. A good decision, as they avoided most of the artillery barrage and reached the objective buildings very fast. The German defenders have mostly been turned and despite the few hidden units, they could not prevent the paratroopers to advance steadily. The German defense eventually collapsed. A win for the Americans who made o good use of a not optimized German setup.

Draw
The Americans attacked on the center and were hit two times by artillery. There were three turns firing that only managed to break a couple of German units, readily rallied. Then the Americans crossed the street using smoke grenades but the German fire broke a lot of them, with a couple of 6,6 causing casualties. To make it worse, of two CC the Americans lost one, with more casualties. Finally, with two turns to go and most of the German position still intact the Americans concede.

The americans decided to concentrate their attack from the north east. It was unexpected for the germans who prepared the artillery barrage on the north buildings. Hidden german troops did not prevent them to turn the german defense. The germans quickly moved east to reinforce their right wing. American and german paratroopers quickly entered melee. The melee got several reinforcements from both sides but despite odds the germans were finally victorious. Meanwhile, the remaining americans took control of the west buildings. Only one building north of town remained. A squad was about to get in when a hidden LMG spat fire. The survivors were then hit by artillery. Finally, the remaining fallschirmjaeger took control of the north ans the 101st airborne controlled the south. German resistance was still present at Carentan.
