After a hard struggle, the Red Army had succeeded in establishing a significant bridgehead at Serafimovich, on the west bank of the Don. The German XVII Corps and the Italian XXXV Army Corps were assigned to a joint counterattack. At the crack of dawn, after a short artillery preparation and number of Stuka bombings, the confidant Italians attacked. Despite a hard defense, and significant Italian losses, the Russian lines were broken, and the defenders were forced to retreat. Later that day, the order was given that the secondary target of the attack, Kotovskij, was to be assaulted.

Russian guns are powerful but setup severely limits their use. Not sure if it was bad tactics or bad luck but the Russians never looked like winning. Lots of boxcars and snake eyes but only 1 sniper activation (to break an Italian tank crew that survived CS2). Italians achieved victory conditions by turn 4 and had completely cleared the town a turn later.

A nice little scenario featuring the very soft Italians against the Russians with a handful of light tanks thrown in. The key to this one (for the Italians) is to either push to the buildings as fast as possible, or cut off the Russian reinforcements. It's more than likely the Russians will set up their 2 ART guns right behind the 2 hex wooden building and use it as their last stand. If they are able to get reinforcements up into the woods/buildings the Italians are going to have a hard time of it. The Italian player should waste not time chasing the Russian armor and should focus all their firepower on cutting off the Russians.

Great scenario, went the distance with the Italians holding on in CC against the Russian counter attack; this after both Russian guns were destroyed, one by a DC attack; The other Italian DC was used against one of their tanks after it was picked up by a Russian crew!

My defense concentrated on protecting the multi-hex building with a modicum of resistance provided in the church. The Russians just don't have enough to try and hold everything, especially against a rather tough Italian force (half elite/half 1st line) who have a couple DCs, a FT, and five radio-equipped tanks. A very strange situation, that seems to go against the rulebook, provides them with two commissars and only one leader. These commissars doing their jobs will be vitally important to the Russians. The reinforcements MUST make it to the woods mass on their turn of entry to help bolster the defense. As such, the Italians should concentrate a large portion of their forces to try and prevent just that. My guns were of little help early as they were stuck behind the building, but they did make moving into hexes Q3 and R1 dangerous for the Italians and were especially important in the late-game defense. And don't forget their smoke capability, which certainly came in handy versus the FT. The Russian tanks and a plentiful amount of ATRs/MGs took their toll on the Italian armor, knocking out three while only losing one to immobilization. By the end of the game it felt like the Italians were trying to push a square peg into a round hole as they just got massacred every time they came near or (briefly) entered the main building. A very fun scenario against a very fun opponent.

VASL league game. Superb design. This one came down to time, Ken's Russians simply couldn't get close enough and my Italians got an entire turn to setup a defense for turn 6 and 7, so Ken kicked off his attack on turn six with all Italians except steeple unit concealed. He also had no tanks left, although the Italian tanks had all died in their efforts to kill off his tanks and reinforcing infantry, with only one tank surviving its UK roll in turn 7 too late to move. The last T26 went down to an ATR shot from the steeple (hit the rear turret as its TCA had change to obtain the shock result on the last Italian tank).

Did not get a shot off with the FT. However, the 5 tanks stuffed the ability of the reinforcements to get anywhere near the victory area. I was able to break one gun crew and force it to rout away (and then I captured the gun). The other gun malfed it's main armament. Immobilized a soviet tank with a 1st line squad CC. The other was killed with a CH. Let's see how this goes next week when I am the defender.
