The American XXth Corps’ advance through central France brought it to the banks of the Moselle River in early September, and the 5th Infantry Division’s 11th Infantry Regiment forced a crossing of the river in the rain at Dornot on September 8. In the early hours of 10 September, Major W.M. Haughey’s 1st Battalion of the 10th Infantry Regiment crossed the river by boat. Once ashore, they overran a small German outpost on Hill 386 and were in the process of deploying a defensive line when they were hit suddenly by armor and infantry of SS Panzergrenadier-Division 17 from the nearby town of Arry.

American won but the scenario does hinge on (usually) the AT gun and its invulnerability (with the exception of malfunction).

This fighting withdrawal tutorial went down to the wire. Jim was pressed for time after clearing the board 62 woods but managed to take DD4 and DD6 AND get around my right flank to grab U8 and threaten Y6. I held Y6 but his 8-0 and two HS grabbed V2 and X2. I was able to retake X2 to preserve the win, but it was close. The 57L proved quite effective against moving infantry but this one hinges on how long you can stall the Germans on board 62.

Looking at ROAR before starting it looked quite balanced with 22/18 in favor of the US. But I think depending on which reinforcements the US elect to choose, balance might shift significantly one way or another. The ATG is EXTREMELY powerful for it can hit basically anything everywhere - hardly a place to hide. That's why I selected it along with the 1.5+BAZ+7-0 reinforcements to enter on the flank(s) where they would be needed.
The opposing Germans came through the southern woods in force, with the MTR ht clinging to its northern fringe only to be taken out by the 57L. My plan was to delay the German in the woods but to pull back some forces early to be able to delay the Germans again later and to pull my "head from the noose" and not to get stuck broken and destroyed there. My fallback defence was a little faulty as it allowed the Germans to isolate unsupported single defenders and to punch through the holes to keep brokies DM - exactly what I wanted to avoid. But I did break a number of his attackers as well, so the plan just barely worked as I planned. I had pulled back the HMG to 42Z10 supported by a reinforcig 7-0+666, the MMG+667 to 42DD7 with 9-1, a pesky concealed HS to EE6, a 666+BAZ to DD4, a 546 to Y4 and a reinforcing 346+BAZ to V3 when my southern woods force was beginning to go down. Meanwhile, the Pz IV had been killed, the StuG was hiding on a trailbreak in some woods and the ATG staring down the board at any vehicle about to enter or to move. The German not having left Bd62 at any point during the turn 4 MPh conceded after two 548s broke and a 447 pinned while moving adjacent to my last toehold in the southern woods consisting of a 7-0, 546, 236 and broken 667.
I reckon, the scenario would be much easier for the German if the US neglected to select the 57L (or maybe the 81mm MTR) as reinforcements.

Referencing a comment below, I just did not make a very competent fighting w/drawal. But after I made some moves I realized what I should have done ... doh!!! I agree though if US can preserve force for end game while still holding off a quick german surge it would be tough. Will say my AT gun malf'd early.

I opted for no additional forces as I did not want to give the Germans the ability to get a loaded halftrack. Additionally, I set up a little too far forward. My HMG dished out nothing before the manning squad broke, and the MMG got one fire lane to slow things down before it broke. After that, it was a cakewalk for the Germans

nice scenario, got lucky with the SMOKE but the american firepowe is just too much (as usual), if coupled with competent fighting retreat there is no way for the German to pull it off.

The American 81mm mortar was a great choice as sole added force. It limited the German counter options, and wreaked havoc with it's good LOS and the wooded areas the Germans attempted to form up in.
