Spring of 1944 found the Red Army juggernaught in the foothills of the Carpathians and all of Germany's allies in Eastern Europe were now in danger. The ebb of the rasputitsa made mechanized operations possible and on April 25th, Konev's 2nd Tank Army moved across the Romanian border with the objective of Iassy. German and Romanian forces defended well enough to buy time for their own armored reserves to move into position around the town of Targul Frumos. There, the Panzergrenadier Division Grossdeustschland met Konev's tanks in the mud of May's thaw.

2020 Street Fighting (round 5). OBA never came into play and the Russians over ran the Germans. One Panther malfunctioned it MA and was recalled. A PzIV random selected both CMG & BMG for malfunction, 10-3 failed a MC, malfunctioned MMG.... you get the picture. Paul also played a solid game with an initial plan and never deviated from it for a well deserved third place tournament finish.

Lost my AT gun, radio and MMG to 12swhich offered little resistance to the Russian advance. When the German tanks arrived the Russians were able to kill two panthers, one with a critical hit. Want to play this one again.

This is an unsual scenario pitting a lot of Russians supported by tanks and with good leadership vs. a German crack force led by a 10-3 and a hero. Good tanks will reinforce the Germans and they have 100mm Arty and some Wire to slow down the Russian attack. As the Germans have either to pass through a muddy stream with increased chance of bog in most adjacent hexes to it and the Germans can hunker down in mostly stone buildings, it looks intimidating to the Russians at start. The three bridges crossing the stream without fear of bog are likely unsafe due to a hidden German 75mm AT Gun and even more so for infantry with the potential of a 10-3 led MMG for some -5 shots... I decided to avoid the bridges with both my tanks and my infantry. To my surprise it later turned out that no bridge was covered with Wire nor the German ATG. Nevertheless, the advance through the stream felt the safer way. The Russians reached the Stream mostly unharmed. But getting out of there reaching some protective terrain was tricky and proved to be difficult. I moved in my tanks mostly via the Russian left flank and most of the infantry in the middle with weaker forces on both flanks. The tanks moved forward relatively unimpeded, but the infantry was broken in large numbers when struggling out of the stream and into the scarce protective terrain. The German 10-3 King Kong was just fearsome as the Russians had stretches of OG to cross. Feeling that I would be desperately short on time if nothing happened, I resolved to move agressively sacrificing some infantry to get my own MP with some infantry in position to try to duke it out with the 10-3. While not hopeless odds, the bet was in favor for the 10-3 to prevail. But that old tactic of rolling low helped me. Snakes killed the 10-3 and his accompanying squad+MMG. This was the turning point as now the Russian infantry could dare to move towards the Victory area. Still, morale 8 Germans in Stonebuldings are exceedingly tough to root out. The Russian infantry assault to get into the village and stonebuildings was largely shot to pieces. But close to the bridge I could bring some units closer, even brashly driving a T-34 brashly direcly under the nose of the German panzer-ace (8-1) in his Panther and disappearing out of LOS into the stream beneath the victory bridge. He did not fire for fear of my IS-2s which were yet to move. Both the Russians and the Germans had their lucky rolls. The German Arty was not working, because his Spotting rounds always seemed to land out of LOS. This contributed to the Russians seeing some light at the end of the corridor. The game came close to the very end with the German winning by 2FP of a Panther's BMG. Fun game.

Tough enough for me!!! This is a tough one for the Russians to be sure. I struggled to get my infantry into play to support a strong armored thrust around the German left flank. Combined arms is a must for any chance at victory.

Liked the scenario, but tough game for my Russians. Had four bogs in five chances. Other poor Russian rolls coupled with favorable German rolls sealed my fate. Will play again.
