At the start of the Malayan Campaign, British forces thrust into Thailand with the intent of capturing strategic points to deny them to the Japanese. Once the Japanese landed at Kota Bharu, however, the British realized they would soon be flanked and recalled their troops. This useless movement weakened the British line at Jitra, where the Japanese finally attacked and soon overran the initial British units, forcing them to withdraw. Near dawn on the 12th, the Japanese forced a detachment of tanks and infantry down the trunk road until, on the outskirts of Asun, the lead tank was knocked out and a Gurkha position was discovered blocking the road.

I was Japanese attacker vs Gurkha Defender. Attack purpose is to seize a road through the Jungle moving north to south. The Gurkha defense was centered/rear of play area. I was able to get my tanks and infantry into good attack positions without difficulty. My tanks removed two wire obstacles as they did their bog checks. Unfortunately, my Japanese did poorly in Hand to Hand with one stubborn Gurkha Squad who eventually took out 3 squads and infiltrated back to the north to remain out of range for an end game effective attack. One tank was immobilized by a ATR but still was in good position when immobilized. My dice was awful late in the game. I MALFed the guns on my tanks or missed badly with shots. Gurkha squads did not have to do much to win.

Interesting and tense game. Gurkhas fell back slowly, retaining concealment and trying to deny it to the Japanese, whilst leaving two half-squads top and bottom of the board. Japanese advance seemed relentless but the took casualties, meaning they had insufficient forces to clear the last few road-adjacent locations on their final turn. The two "outlier" half-squads also came into their own at the end, moving round the back of the Japanese to take up positions next to the road,; the Japanese had too few troops left to stop them.
HtH CC between Japanese and Ghurkas can be bloody, so a bit dicey, but the luck probably balanced out in the end.

Used Jap balance. A lot of CC that dragged on into multi Turn Melee. Crucial MMC self rally on the flank created an 8-1 leader which clinched the win in the end by forcing Japs to reorganize & divert dwindling units to counter the new threat.

My second playing having cocked the VC last time. Early DR favoured the Gurkhas and saw 2 IJA squads KIA. Tanks Bogged on the wire slowing their progress. Gurkhas retreated in good order and kept their force in tact for the endgame avoiding CC until they had the ambush advantage. Went to the last turn with IJA needing to win final 3 CC which they couldn’t quite manage.

Misread the VC area so had 2 HS out of position in the end game. Nevertheless a chance to win but lost a crucial Melee in final British turn with mutual elimination and the remaining Gurkha units then went down in Japanese final turn Prep. Good fun the dense jungle throws in the occasional surprise with Straying in the MPh.

The Japanese thought they had this one well in hand. On the final Japanese turn there was only a Gurkha HS that was within reach of the victory hexes (thanks to a fortunate Japanese sniper activation earlier in the turn) and the rest of the Gurkha OOB was pretty much decimated. The Japanese had a full squad and a HS within reach of the Gurkha unit. The Japanese HS was concealed, the full squad was not. I (Japanese player) advanced both units into CC. The Gurkha HS pulled off an ambush and was able to withdraw into a neighboring victory hex and I couldn't do anything to counter it. Victory to the British.
This one was a lot of fun!

This is a short nasty jungle fight that has everything one could ask for except flamethrowers. Dice were very much on the Gurkhas' side this time around-- it's not often that a force in ASL will end a scenario with more leaders than they started, and the addition of not one but two 8-1s turned the few surviving Gurkha squads into nigh-unstoppable monsters.

The IJA tried to bull their way through the jungle road but a stout Gurkha defense stymied them. As it was, it still came down to the last CC.

Jason picked this one for an easier intro for me to PTO - Well you could just tell it was going to go my way when my first die roll was snakes against a moving IJA squad....I rolled a further couple of good shots as well as escaping from some nasty HtH situations by successful ambush and withdrawal.

A tough attack for the Japanese since CC against the Gurkhas is offers bad odds. Also Banzai possibilities are few in the dense jungle against a high FP, stealthy opponent. My opponent played a skillful defense and early CC results went against the IJA. Once Japanese leader fell in CC while the 2nd got nailed by the sniper leaving the leaderless Nipponese to fail badly. Good scenario for PTO practice.

My IJA troops defeated Txema's Gurkhas at ASL147 A Stiff Fight. Txema conducted a skillfully retreat but finally fell against a very good rolls from the Japanese and a terrible rolls by his troops. This scenario is a great introduction to the PTO terrain.
