Following the disastrous loss of Stalingrad, German High Command faced another threat in northern Russia. After Russian breakthroughs at several points on the Don River, the Germans were in danger of losing three Heeresgruppes – in total, more men then they had lost at Stalingrad. In response, on March 6, Manstein’s Panzer Armee 4, including crack formations such as SS-Panzerkorps 3 and Infanterie-Division “Grossdeutschland” launched a counteroffensive, which would later be known as the Third Battle for Kharkov.

A slight delay in the german offensive when the AFVs waited for infantry running to the village may have swayed the balance to the russians. the hideous rolling on the russian side swayed it back. Malfed the Gun on the second shot, malfed a tank MA, hit with a 76L into a building and then dudded the shot and so on. It came down to the last turn where a close combat against a pinned russian squad didn´t succeed and the russians won this time. Taxing on morale and several personal moralechecks resulted in pin for the german player who was ready to throw in the towel at least five times during the game but stood as the victor in the end.

Fun scenario. My Germans suffered terribly on the first two turns as Dan’s AT Gun took down all 3 of my MK III’s and 2 of my half tracks beforehand he MALF’d it. My Tiger was killed by Street Fighting and a T-34 took down a MK IV . At that point I thought it was time to concede, but by game end, my Grenadiers had taken 10. Victory locations and eliminated every Russian tank. Turned out to be a really fun game despite my terrible early choices. Dan would get the win in the end.

Tense scenario - used the 250/1's to find the 76L in D6 and lost one, also found T-34 in F3. Main attack went around the Russian right. T-34s proved very hard to kill but eventually HEAT and the Tiger got them. T-70 got an SPW but fell to a PzIVF2. PzIIIN's never ran out of HEAT and PzIII Flamm didn't run out of fuel until GT5. LV hindrance reduced hits for both sides, but Panzers got two CH's on occupied buildings and broke the Russian defense. Lots of sniper activity but only one pin and a kill on the German 9-1. If a few more shots had hit, this one could have easily tipped the Russians way.

Draw
Only did set-up and 1.5 turn. Of note was that the Tiger put one of the T-34's out of action with it's last APCR round on turn one, and that the Flammmpanzer got immobilized on turn two. To be continued.

I think the scenario is pro-russian, it takes a lot of experience and finesse from both sides, a scenario for expert players.
And the German has to be uber-aggressive in order to take the needed ground.
Reccomanded.

Aggressive use of the Tiger almost led to disaster when a point blank shot from a T34 penetrated the front armour but I finished the game with no Russian squads and 31 CVP exactly. A very exciting game. The Germans do need to be aggressive.

We played it right after opening the AP10, so no study or preparation and this probably had a big effect on the result.
The Russian gun was too forward and was swamped by the entering turn 2 infantry halftrack.
From there it was a skill full retreat by the Russian that lost only a couple of squads retreating to the last line of defence.
With no loss caused by the gun, it was a bit too much armor wise for the Russian to handle.
Its a very nice scenario, very balanced in my opinion with a good setup by the Russian.
It need some study and preparation.

HIP gun knocked out a Pz4 first turn - after that it was down hill for the Russians. FlammPz kicked some booty. Tiger got all 3 T-34s and survived numerous hits...
