2024-03-02 | (D) Jobbo Fett | vs | RootinPutin | | Slovak win | The Polish defense is either going to get hammered on turn one or must set up outside of all line of sight from the Mortar and Machine Guns. My best stacks immediately broke and fled, allowing for the Slovaks to easily take the right hill. I got rather lucky early on with my CC rolls, blunting the attacking force that struck on the left side (as well as swinging around towards the rear) but in the end I simply lost too many units to be able to contest the victory points effectively. Feels far too weighted towards the Slovaks - I would consider upping the VC requirement to 14 VP at least, and perhaps giving the Poles the balance as well. |
2023-11-28 | (A) nathan wegener | vs | James Treu | | Slovak win | Opponent tried to rotate troops to minimise exposure to fire. Got a couple of good rolls on my first prep fire phase and then rushed . Over in 3 turns. |

2023-04-13 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Jim Vasiliou | | Slovak win | The bulk of the Slovak force circled around the west side in an attempt to eventually take the eastern ridge from the north. A smaller force moved directly against the Polish forces on the ridge. The Slovak mortar had some initial moderate success. However, the crew broke on the Polish Turn 2 seriously hampering the frontal assault. In the mean time, the flanking force was able to close on a Polish MMG in the center stone building, despite taking losses. The Slovaks eventually encircled the MMG and then broke the Polish squad. This loss in the center left no Polish forces to prevent a further advance from the north. On the ridge, Slovak attacks were able to gradually whittle down the Polish defenders, who were having great trouble rallying. On Turn 5, with only 2 1/2 squads remaining and the Slovak mortar crew in good order, the Poles conceded. |

2021-07-22 | (D) Ken Rutkowski | vs | Jay Y | | Slovak win | Fun scenario. The Pole's need some luck. For me they didn't get the die rolls when needed. This one went down to the very last turn. |
2021-05-24 | (A) Ulric Schwela | vs | Øyvind Bjørkås | | Polish win | Pole set up the fortified Alamo on the right hand hill, with delaying forces on the left. Slovak set up MG stacks out of LOS to begin and advance concealed, as far back as possible, worried they would get broken on turn 1; in the event most Polish long range fire was ineffective, only breaking the MMG stack late in the game after which the Polish sniper went on a solo Slovak slice and dice in the woods. Nasty. Slovak MGs varied in effectiveness, scoring a few breaks that temporarily gave the forward troops some respite. Mortar started with a well placed smoke round, after which it broke and Xd; the absence of its 8 FP with ROF 3 was sorely missed. Left hand Slovaks quickly swept over the hill and overran the Poles, except for one hs that slipped through and started reclaiming buildings; sending some units back to take care of it took them out of the end game. The front of the Alamo hill proved impossible to assault, any units advancing up being knocked right back, but they provided some nuisance value. Main threat became the sweepers that moved into the rear and briefly claimed one lvl 3 hill hex, the Slovaks maxing out at 11 VP before most likely being knocked back again. A lot of interesting manoeuvring for the Slovak, and crafty skulking for the Pole. Definitely willing to play again one day. |
2021-02-10 | (D) Kevin Sanders | vs | Rob Brown | | Slovak win | Poles held till late game but just could not rally. Rate tear from mortar locked it. Would play this one again |
2021-01-11 | (A) Ross Mulcare | vs | Seb Mankowski | | Polish win | A great scenario with lots of interesting lines of sight and angles of approach. Know your rules about Abrupt Elevation Changes, Gullies, and Difficult Terrain! Slovaks captured 12 VP in turn 7, but didn't have the manpower to hold them. Poles won in final turn by taking back 2 VP locations. |

2019-08-17 | (D) Dave Mareske | vs | Rex Lowan | | Slovak win | Rex made a slow but effective advance. My Polish defenders could not make a morale check and were faced with several low rolls throughout the game. Great scenario; would like to play again. |
2019-05-13 | (D) Jeff B | vs | David Murray | | Polish win | Really fun scenario with the Slovaks having to cross some nasty terrain to grab a hilled village. Slovaks placed their heavy weapons on their high hills to clear my ridgeline. Thankfully they were almost all dummies, but that hindered my shell game defense. These weapons would prove to be a very effective deterrent to me re-manning the walls. I was a bit surprised that opponent started heavy east, which is where the most brutal terrain was, but he soon shifted to the center. The center proved a bit difficult to crack however and he once again shifted part of his force east. As weak as my defense was there it was easier going than we both thought it would be. I really regretted not putting a trench in M5, though my trenches did prove usefully placed in the back center. The second half of the game played much faster than the first, with a lot of close quarter fighting and CC. Going into my last turn (the Poles get last move) the Slovaks had 13 VP and I needed to retake two. My opponent made what I consider a fatal mistake in his APh, moving a squad to a spot that allowed me to retake four VP with relative ease, but when he had clear shots at the hex I moved into with both his mortar and MMG nest I thought I was the one with egg on my face. As it turned out, luck was better than skill, as only one of my MMCs broke, allowing me to retake three VP for the win. Great game! |
2017-10-15 | (A) Alan Krause | vs | Sebastiano Caltabiano | | Slovak win | A good showing by the Slovaks, again. |
2017-04-09 | (D) walter mcwilliams | vs | Tom Kearney | | Slovak win | Work issues kept me from Derrik's "Where Iron Crosses Grow" tournament, but Tom Kearney was nice enough to fill in so I could get a little ASL in this weekend. Tom and I had started a Low-Countries Campaign two weeks ago, but after receiving PiF as a gift he requested, and I agreed, we should play through those scenarios. We both have a sweet spot for the early war fights. He also requested we give the "Campaign Game Leaders" option a try as well, to which I also agreed. I have the poles through out.
Winter City looks and is a challenging and fun scenario for both sides. I set my defense strong on the Polish right and placed a couple squads on the left to keep him honest and used my concealment advantage to keep him guessing as to where the real killers where. I also used the trench counters to build secure movement routes to the reverse slope to all me to shuffle guys around.
Tom came hard through the woods on he polish right and across the orchard covered hill. The halfs squads I had posted on the far right did little to impede his advance. His fire support teams took a beating. The mortared malf then failed to repair after only one fire phase, while the kill stack was broken up in my first DfPh. He kill stack recovered quickly and moved back into position and survived another round when tom rolled back-to-back-to-back 2MC's by rolling 3's, and I failed on 3 tries to get a Sniper Activation ugh! None the less as we entered the later part of the middle innings, my defense was still in excellent shape and this was shaping up to come down to the wire.
The Mr. ROF himself showed up again! I say again because in the opening phase of BFP 119 "The Narrow Front" Tom's dual 50cal went on a RoF tear that ripped my right flank to shreds. This time in the PfPh of Turn 5 Tom's dual-LMG's w/ -1 ldr held ROF 4x vs poles in +2 TEM and got 4 NMC/1MC. I failed all four!
The right flank was now completely compromised and he waltzed right into the trenches and village with out a single DFF shot to stop him! I capitulated with only a GO 7-0 left!
I would play this scenario again as either side. I love the extremely unfriendly terrain and attack and defensive options, and I feel most matches will come down to the wire. My campaign leader did earn two merits for rallies while Tom's earned 6. |

2017-04-01 | (D) David Garvin | vs | Ron Duenskie | | Slovak win | |
2016-11-16 | (A) Michael Rodgers | vs | Erik Lindblad | | Slovak win | Recently retired Erik Lindblad and I had a FtF session today at my place. I chose BFP105 THE WINTER CITY from my "to play" list because I didn't remember Erik's abilities with vehicles or PTO. This scenario has Slovaks attacking Poles in mountain terrain. The Slovaks have 17 squads with MGs and an 81mm MTR. The Poles have 10 squad equivalents with MGs, foxholes and trenches. The Slovaks gets points for buildings and level three hexes and need twelve points. Erik placed the bulk of his units on and around the hill on the Polish left; that hill is also surrounded by a gully. He placed a few HS and dummies on the Polish right. I put the 81 on a level three hex far away from the Polish. I put an 8-1, MMG, HMG and one squad on the other level three in my setup area, closer to the Polish. I sent 3.5 squads and one leader towards the Polish right. All other bodies attacked the Polish left. A key moment occurred on turn two when the 81 had back-to-back CH against the HMG team, then the MMG team. Erik had difficulty re-manning the HMG (which he had unfortunately placed in a foxhole instead of a trench) and the MMG was eliminated. A sniper took out one of the Polish HS on their right side which helped the Slovaks on that side of the board. After four turns, I had eliminated the Polish units on their right side and so could obtain ten points from that area. My troops on the Polish left were on the hill and in the nearby gully. I had captured the Polish HMG. When Erik's prep fire failed to break that unit, he conceded.
We agreed that his trench placement could have been a little better. |
