Dug into the snow along the edge of the village of Longchamps, weary Americans watched as an armored force deployed from Compogne in the fields to the north. Orders went out to the gun crews to engage the armor as soon as it was in range. Within minutes a fierce firefight developed as the armored force drove into the American positions. The “mad minute at Longchamps” had begun. . .

I made my defence with the AT guns and M10 GMCs covering the approach routes and waiting for him to commit. I was able to hit with long range fire and with some pretty good luck, kept concealment. I ended up losing an AT gun and one of the M10s, but displaced with the other M10. It was moving up for a counter attack when I sprung an ambush with bazookas. One missed, the other malfed. But in the next phase I was able to finish off a tank, reducing him to 2 mobile fully tracked AFVs for the win. Good timing for me, because he was just about to storm the village!

The Germans attacked from the NE crossing the open ground to the tree line. The American HMG with 9-2 leader, which had been HIPed on a 2nd level floor, revealed itself and cut down the attackers. A MMG and Mortar were equally effective. On Turn 1, the German AFVs strayed into 2 AT guns, a M10 GMC, and bazooka. The guns and AFV Def Fired and IF'd with no effect. The bazooka was able to wreck one Panther. On the American Turn 1 the AFV and AT guns had better luck, wrecking 3 Pz IVs and immobilzing a 4th. The Germans dispatched one AT gun and the AFV and pushed into the tree line, but suffered heavily when the HMG KIA'd the German 9-2 leader and a MMC with him. While the Germans pressed the attack, the Americans slowly withdrew using the buildings and woods for cover leaving little for the Germans to shoot at for Def Fire. The Germans began to make some better progress and attempted to flank the Americans with HTs loaded with infantry. But these vehicles encountered the last AT Gun which left two burning wrecks as well as immobilizing another Panther. The Germans had 3 Mobile AFVs remaining, one with a malf'd MA. There was no time to be cautious. Smoke neutralized one MMG and a Pz broke a defender with Bounding Fire. But a German Pz IV with malf'd MA ventured forward leaving itself vulnerable. The 2nd M10 came out of hiding and drove up to the Pz with the support of 2 MMCs, one with a Bazooka, and 2 leaders. The German Pz IV survived AFPh and CC. But with the destruction inevitable in the next turn, the German player conceded.

I took several PzIV with my M10 so he had to hide the rest behind woods, to avoid compromising his cap. His halftracks fell to my bazookas but his Panthers started pounding my line while the SS infantry fell to my MGs crossing the open ground. Then I did a mistake and moved forward the M10, trying to flank the Panthers, and he burned them. Then the Panthers and the PzIV reserve moved forward and routed my first line, entering with the rest of the infantry and taking about 16 buildings before the last turn ended.

I had to pass several PMCs in the first turns, as Martí received my troops with a hail of fire when they had to cross open ground, killing several tanks and a lot of infantry. As the game progressed, however, little by little his troops also wore out, and when he ran out of tanks or cannons, it was time to storm the village. Unfortunately, I lacked infantry and time to occupy the necessary houses. However, it has been a very intense and exciting match. A highly recommended scenario.

Germans went on their left. Took too many casualties on the way in to town. Conceded after six turns.

Fast movement presented a problem for the American defense. Even though the SS lost two Panthers, one KIA the other immobilized, the Germans were able to finish the game with a win.

A heavy dose of VBM freeze cleared the way for the opening infantry moves. By the end of Turn 1 both Wolverines were gone, taking only one Panzer down with them (but exacting a fairly heavy toll on the German infantry). By Turn 2 the Germans had completely taken control of the Board 16 wood mass, while the Americans scurried to reposition themselves west. Turn 3 saw one of the AT guns lose its crew (the other two guns effectively out of the action in the far east), allowing the Germans to begin their flanking sweep from the west. Turn 4 saw the Germans begin their brute force assault into town from the west. By turn 5 the Americans had no answer for the six remaining German tanks so they called it a day.

What was once a highly unbalanced scenario in favor of the Germans has now become a highly unbalanced scenario in favor of the Americans. There are at least a half dozen changes in the update, some of them quite major. Germans conceded already on Turn 2 as the Americans just devastated them, leaving them with only 4 mobile vehicles.

Fun game for the Germans, maybe not so much for the US...Germans have lots of toys and high quality infantry. I managed to take oyt two of the ATG and 1 M10 by T2 and swept down into the Churchyard area, good smoke and not so good US dice meant it was too tough for them.
