Beginning in September 1939, armies on both sides of the French-German border took position, behind the cover of front line protection units. France had created specific units for border surveillance, the Gardes Frontaliers. But, with mediocre training and second rate equipment, sometimes they even had part of their families in Germany, these were second-rate troops. On the 8th, such a detachment was tasked with the reconnaissance of the village of Berensdorf. - - - Victory conditions: To win, the French player must exit > 9 CVP (in Good Order) off south board edge.
I love the esateric theme of this scenario. However, after three plays of this, I am at a complete loss on how the French are supposed to win. Either there is a trick I can't see, or the German players who lost their scenarios were very unlucky. in my opinion, the Germans don't need the booby traps, nor the high SAN. None of the games I played did the booby trash even come into play. The Germans have an advantage of leadership, and the CVP count. The French are disadvantaged with short time to cover the distance under fire, poor leadership, poor ELR, and... being French. They break and they are pretty much out of the game. I tried running from the start the first time I played the French, and putting up a two turn fight before making my run the second time. If someone knows the trick for the French, please share. I'm loosing sleep over this one. :)

This was the first of two playings in one night. It's short and therefore can
be a bit dicey.
A bit like Fighting Withdrawal in that both sides are sprinting for the same board
edge. I read someone say of Fighting Withdrawal that the first to prep fire loses.
That might just apply here.
It's interesting that Dave and Martin think this is quite pro French. Rob and I had
the Germans win both times.

I clearly did something wrong - but help me figure out what. Pretty much mathematically lost by turn 3.

The French started to run away and German fire occurred breaking some squads. They let two squads behind and continue to flee in the woods. The Germans captured both squads were unable to catch or fire at the other fleeing French troops. A decisive French victory with 16 EVP out of 13 needed.

A very nice opponent for a fun and tense game. The French tried to exit 75% of their OB but they failed (helped by the Germans) and the victory conditions were out of reach at the last turn.

Wild West Fest 2019 (open play). Well placed German LMGs on the flanks tore the French apart.

A quick and fun fighting withdrawal scenario. The French created a Hero and 7-0 leader and tried to exit the entire OB rather than sacrifice a few squads as a covering force. The Germans were able to break and capture a good number of squads putting the scenario out of reach for the French. I would play it again.
