The French command reacted slowly to Rommel’s breakthrough at Avesnes. Taking advantage of the sluggish French reaction, the Germans refueled and rearmed their Panzers and on May 18th they advanced toward Le Catelet. Colonel Veron, given the task of defending the indefensible, prepared the small village garrison and the 9th Army’s headquarters staff to meet the expected German thrust. In the middle of the day, French recon units spotted their German counterparts advancing on Le Catelet from the north. A group of Panhard armored cars fought back against the lead units even as German infantry moved into position for an assault on the headquarters in the town hall. . .
Attacker: German (Aufklärungs Abteilung 57 / Kampfgruppe von Ravenstein, Panzer Division 6)
French leaders (not including 8-0) were set up in HIP as close to exit roads as possible. French set up ACs spread thin resulting in a flank by all six German ACs and poor die rolls lead to the a loss of all French AFVs and the Germans had one AC and a half-track left at the end. German player blocked exit routes for French leaders with remaining AFVs and German infantry mopped up defenders in the French HQ, forcing leaders to try and exit. Exit attempt failed.

Used German balance. The Germans stumbled straight into a well placed trap, which left their infantry units forced to try to complete their objective with all of their AFV destroyed behind them. The uncoordinated effort to make up for those early losses just added insult to injury until the attack ran out of manpower by the top of Turn 7 with no real gains by that point. The "End of the ninth" was nowhere to be seen.

Used German balance. All German AFV's were quickly dispatched with good bore sighting which left their infantry hard pressed to make any real head-way.

This is certainly a strange scenario. A bunch of French leaders assisted by a few green squads and four ACs have to either hold the Germans out of a key building, or make ready for a late-game exit. The French do have a fair amount of MGs (as they typically always seem to), but it is extremely risky giving these to the inexperienced squads. So I chose to fully man them with two leaders apiece and hide out near the goal line, leaving the key building entirely undefended. I would use my ACs to initially slow a bum rush by the German Pumas, and then reposition them to provide cover for my fleeing leaders. Not a lot of action the first four turns, as he mostly just took some RBF shots with his Pumas to try and expose my entirely HIP force. I did manage to double team one of his Pumas on the western hill and knock him out on Turn 2, and then went hunting another sole Puma on Turn 4, knocking him out as well. He finally exposed one of my hidden squads on Turn 6 with a scouting HS. There would be more to shortly follow as the French finally starting shooting, eliminating three German HS that turn. Turn 7 took its toll on the French however as the Germans aggressively VBM froze them to allow their infantry a chance to move up. The Germans lost another Puma and a HT, but the French lost three squads, and had almost half their leaders and the INF crew tied up in melee with a German HT after a completely bungled CC attempt. I thought for sure this would cost the French the game when they lost four leaders due to this botched job, but thankfully they had created another 8-1 in CC. On Turn 8, their first allowed to exit units, the French got four leaders worth 6 VP off the board. They would've exited another two worth 4 VP more, but a French leader worth 2 VP was being held captive and would prevent an exit victory. Thus the remaining two free French leaders, assisted by two of their ACs, made a run for the unoccupied victory building to try and hold out one more turn. They managed to run the gauntlet and survive German OBA, only to see a tremendous onslaught of the Germans the following turn. Thankfully for the French the Germans would first have to deal with the blocking French ACs. This they managed to do, and also pinned the French 9-2. This made the French prospect of breaking one of the leaders and routing back a hex to ensure a victory dicey, having to rely on the 8-0 to rally back the broken 9-2 during the last RPh. But since this was their only real hope of surviving another DFPh they did so. Thankfully for them the 8-0 did his job, rallying back the 9-2 and giving them a final tally of 14 VP. An interesting scenario to play once, but I certainly would not want to play it again.

We both made a lot of mistakes. I misused the German vehicles and he blasted them all and I took nasty surprises from the HIP MGs, but at the end the German infantry occupied all the key positions and last turn was a stressful sequence of French leaders withdrawing and rolling defensives, residuals, PTCs and a Melee, with the French winning with the last roll by one pip. It's a long and tense scenario.
