Overview:
As the drive on Moscow slowed due to supply problems and general winter, STAVKA was given time to deploy fresh troops from other fronts. The 78th Infantry, Siberian veterans of the Mongolian frontier, were transferred 6000 miles to use skillful ambushes and delaying tactics to slow the panzer’s march on Moscow. Near the River Istra, they were finally ordered to halt and fight. The snow-covered fields and the medieval town of Istra itself would become a battlefield for several weeks. On 26th November, the 78th was renamed the “9th Guards Infantry”, but needed no special titles to display élan or heroism. Squeezing out of the pincers formed by 10th Panzer Division and 2nd SS “Das Reich”, the “marvelous Siberians” would regroup and launch a counterattack to retake the historic town.

2017-12-19(D) Scott Sherer vs D. Bruce Weston Russian winPlayed this one with full ASL rules as I am teaching a co-worker the game and we decided to step up from ASLSK to ASL. Gave the Germans 6 dummy ? counters since they would set up concealed on board, but ignored the SSR about their increased broken morale. Called SSR#1 full winter camouflage, but kept the no FFMO. Probably made it a bit too easy for the Russians as they could assault move next to the Germans without losing their concealment, but it played pretty well considering I was the more experienced player as the Germans. The Russians won by capturing two of the three buildings, one of which was made easier by the MMG with the 9-2 leader rolling a 12 on one turn followed by a 6 on its repair in the subsequent RPh. Good learning experience for my friend...he's ready to go full ASL and we are going to try Gavin Take next!
2017-11-18(D) Jonathan Kapleau vs Zucker, Daniel Russian win
2017-05-14(A) Seumas Hoskins vs Dean Russian winThe German setup was spread among the three Victory buildings. Russians pushed with everything right in the middle, keeping 4 squads and the DC in reserve. A hesitant German held most of his shots allowing a concealed Russian advance into the building lines when they overwhelmed his forces there. Turn 3 saw the Tactical reserves arrive in the SE corner effectively sneaking right into the building with a dash. The DC attempt was a dud, but the following Russian attacks quickly mopped up the eastern building. The game ended after turn 4 when the Germans had only 2 squads and a heroic leader left (one squad being berzerk and charging a forward russian line)
2017-05-13(D) Louis Langdeau vs Andrew S Russian winI set up pretty far forward of the middle building, putting my 9-2 in front with the MMG. My plan was to either force Andy out to the sides, or cause him to take enough casualties on entry that I could blunt his offensive with my reserves. Andy decided to take the chance, and pushed right up the middle with the majority of his force, leaving the maximum in reserve so I couldn't redeploy that much. My shots weren't great, and Andy did some good sequencing to keep me from getting my best shots where I wanted them. I pushed the rest of my troops into the massive melees that developed, but they ground on for too long, and eventually I lost too much. Once his reserves came in, it was game over.
