On the Kalinin front, Cholm was a strategic crossroad and also dominated a land-bridge through the marshy terrain nearby. The first major Russian assault on Festung Cholm took place on the 19th of January, and over the succeeding weeks repeated attacks shrank the perimeter. The freezing weather, snipers and lack of supplies made the garrison’s life a misery.
