Overview:

At the initial stage of the German invasion of Poland, the XXII Corps had orders to break the defense south of Cracow, defended by the Polish 10th (Motorized) Cavalry Brigade. In charge of the brigade was Colonel St. Maczek, who immediately started to use the brigade's 121st Light Tank Company as a kind of "fire brigade", thrown in at threatened parts of the front in order to secure any breach. - - - - Maczek Fire Brigade is a tourney-sized 5.5 turn scenario. German light tanks and elite infantry from the 4th Light Division have orders to secure 12 buildings defended by Polish infantry. The "fire brigade" in the form of Vickers tanks enter as Polish reinforcements.
Attacker: German (Elements of 4. leichte Division)

2023-06-25(D) Douglas Leslie vs Jeff Howell Polish winTerrific game against Jeff Howell in round 3 of the VASL League competition. The German assault got off to a bad start when one AFV was immobilised in a position from which it could play little further part in the game and a truck perished with all of its passengers. Flushed with success, I stupidly left my HMG position at level one so that it could try to take out another of the thinly armoured German AFVs. It gacked the shot and then broke under fire with the result that the entire Polish defence came unstuck in the village. Desperate AFV combat followed which included an incredible sequence when Jeff parked two AFVs adjacent to one of my Polish tanks and broke both MAs. Things were looking good until the very next RPh when they both managed to repair them and destroy their target. After lots of craziness, the game came down to the Germans needing to capture two out of three buildings. One was manned by three MMC and the Germans had to cross open ground to reach it. They ran through the hail of fire to nail all three defenders with an unlikely 4+2 shot. The other two buildings looked like easier propositions when the two remaining mobile German AFVs froze their defending squads. Unfortunately for Jeff, his attackers couldn't emulate the debacle at the first building in advancing fire and then they came up short in the close combat that followed.
Great game, regardless of the final result.

2023-02-15(D) Simon Staniforth vs Mick Allen Polish winMy second recent playing of this scenario this time using the Bret Hildebran defence from Journal 8. This I would describe as more conventional in how us average players might set up with the heavy weapons concentrated to defend the village. HMG up front which I lost early to a 6+2 bounding fire shot but the depth of the defence allows for the slowing of the German attack. Plenty of broken MAs, B11s all round, and a MG Stun on those Panzer Is will see a recall. It went to the final turn but helped by a couple of CHs along the way the Poles were just able to hold on to enough buildings for the win.
2022-12-13(D) Simon Staniforth vs Mick Allen Polish winThere is a very good article in Journal 8 accompanying this scenario with a couple of top line players setting out alternative defensive setups. Giving both a play, this was the one by J. R. Tracy which sees the Polish HMG and MMG on the B50 hill mass rather than in the village where they proved effective at putting down fire (against both infantry and the lightly armoured AFVs) as the Germans pushed forward. Efforts to take them out saw one knocked out German tank and infantry casualties. Overall I was I think fortunate with DRs burning a couple of trucks with their occupants on low odds shots and eventually KOing or recalling all but one of the German AFVs for no Polish losses. A defence I wouldn’t have considered (clearly, that’s why I’m not a top line player) it proved highly effective. We’ll be giving the other defensive setup a play in the coming weeks

(VASL Log)
It was my first time playing with trucks and motorcycles and I was caught a bit off-guard by how incredibly slowly these vehicles move off-road. The length of the scenario is barely enough to make it to the other side of the board when off-roading around the village.
The first half of the village was cleared pretty fast by liberally employing smoke and VBM freezing. I then scored three somewhat lucky MG kills against the Polish AFVs, which left their armoured forces a bit overwhelmed and gave my infantry pretty much free movement through the rest of the village. The deal was sealed when two of my motorcycle squads managed to race unharmed past the lone Polish squad defending the access road to the two buildings on the far side of the village.
