At dawn on 26 January, the Volksdeutsche, Dutch and Scandinavian volunteers of the SS “Nordland” Division stood ready for battle outside the village of Gubanitsy. A request for armored reinforcements had been denied: they were forced to rely on a few anti-tank guns and Stummel halftracks. Fortunately for the defenders, these weapons were in capable hands, including those of Dutch SS-Rottenführer Sporck.

Tony's Russians hit hard along my right flank trench line, guarded by the 9-1, 3 squads, a LMG and PSK. The Germans did a fair amount of damage, but the bulk of the armor were able to pass through. The trench line (which surprisingly held until the game end), was able to delay enough time for the defenders to reposition. The Russians exited 5 tanks for 10 VP and needed to take one building for a win. The Germans denied them entry at the doorway. A close game that came down to the last turn. Good replay value for the scenario.

My Germans slanted their defense toward exit prevention, placing both ATs near the Board U road exits and a Trench system between. Unfortunately for me, Chip's Russians had no intention of exit, and used skillful combined arms to push into the village after wiping out Sporck's Ht in an overwatch position with a CH and wound-eliminating my 9-1 leading the MMG team. Snowfall turned heavy during the Russian attack, which also hampered DF, but the remaining German Hts could not get into position to cause real damage and Chip skillfully avoided the ATs once he deduced (correctly) their HIP location. Well-played attack.

I really don't like exit scenarios and, with limited infantry, that's most likely what this one will be. So the best way to deal with VC like that are to just go for it from the start and hope to get it over with quickly one way or the other. I made a very heavy approach down the northern sideline, with all troops riding and risking bail-out MCs. This Russian schwerpunkt worked quite well, and left my opponent a bit dazed by the rapidity and severity of my assault, not expecting me to get some men on foot on the northern side of the hill. Unbenownst to me however this was where a large chunk of his HIP defense was positioned - with a HT and an AT gun up on the hill. His HT managed to recover and blast two of the slower tanks, but his AT gun crew never did and was gone by the end of the turn. They were immediately replaced by a German squad that proved extremely resilient in my efforts to dislodge them. This was due partly to the heavy snow which started on Turn 2, and would prove extremely frustrating to the defenders. The HT was easily taken out in CC the following turn, while my SU-152s had their hands full dealing with the other HT which had flanked me in the east and situated itself HD. John had done a very nice job of repositioning his infantry and, joined by his fresh group of reinforcements, did a good job of hemming me in. But I wanted this scenario over, so I made a break for the exit with the two tanks that could make it, running the gauntlet with both for a quick 4 VP. The HT had been barely dealt with during Turn 3 prep fire when my second SU-152 managed a turret hit with no pips to spare, so the remainder of my tanks consolidated on the east side of the hill (even stopping) to provide support for my infantry as, by this time, I had decided I may need to take a building or two. The Germans had no lack of PFs available, but with the snow and moving vehicles didn't manage to hit a one, and when their reinforcing PSK broke on its first shot and the squad manning the gun up on the hill was dispatched John thankfully decided to call it a day as this one was not a very enjoyable play.

Crazy game - opponent rushed the hill flank. I was able to chew up his infantry so it was a matter of getting enough tanks off. Had to call it for time on the last turn.

Germans conceded early after amazingly bad luck - total overrun without a single hit on a Russian tank; heavy snowfall in turn 2 cost me at least 2 hits

I didn't make it a very close game. Took too many risks and he rolled well w/ his PSK's, to take out some lead tanks. Good scenario though

Played during mini at Double One 13, Sam was very unlucky with AT shots during first couple of turns which allowed me to get tanks up into the town to support the infantry. Game was still close and went to last turn, good fun!

Gave up the balance in the Heroes final for the Germans. The 75L gun kept me in it until its last turn boxcars :-(
