Overview:

As the battle for Guadacanal raged 800 miles to the east, the Japanese had neglected the defense of the Papuan Peninsula. Decisive action by the Allies could crush the Japanese forces in New Guinea and thereby permanently remove the enemy threat to Port Moresby. While the Australians continued to drive the enemy back along the Kokoda Trail, the American 32nd Division would swing around to attack in force the enemy left flank at Buna. The bulk of the attacking force was flown to the northern Papuan coastline and then carried by 20-ton motot launches to Pongani, 23 miles south of Buna. Early on 19 November, the 1st and 3rd Battalion, 128th Regimental Combat Team moved northward up the coastline and were repulsed by the Japanese. The 2nd Battalion moved westward through the jungle, skirting the enemy positions, and on 21 November attacked northward along the Ango Trail.

2025-10-07(A) Eben Johnson vs ernie cameron Japanese winAs the Americans, and typical for me, our DRs destroyed me. My 7.6 average DR vs. his 5.7 hurt as did that I also permanently broke half of my kit, I lost half my leaders to freaky bad luck (of the two remaining, one was wounded to an 8-0), and I could not rally anyone. By the bottom of the fifth of nine turns, 66% of my MMCs were broken.

Nevertheless, I played a cautious game by flanking from the east and west, using cover well, etc., but the IJA could not miss, and I couldn't do myself any good. DRs aside, the IJA favored defending the east, and they built a trench line through 37O3, O4, and N4, with pillboxes in 37N1, M4, and M7.

Enjoyable game with a fun opponent. This one's worth playing again.

2021-11-13(A) Shane Pask vs American winLearnt a lot about pillboxes and their weakness in CC during this game. Japanese setup did not protect the pillboxes well and I won by turn 6. My 4 snakeyes (3 in one turn!) did not help the Japanese plan and the last snakeyes gave me a K/3 against his last leader and MMG crew. The random selection roll was doubles killing the crew and wounding the 10-1. The subsequent MC for the leader was boxcars.
