After the initial assault by the Soviet 108th Guards Rifle Division failed to capture the Városmajor on January 1, the 320th Rifle Division, supported by a half dozen armored vehicles, was ordered to try to seize the City Park. The main defenders of the Városmajor, the Vannay Battalion, had by this time erected three major lines of defense within the park. The Vannay units were supported by elements of Kampfgruppe Europa, headquartered in the Baár-Madas School located just to the north of the Városmajor Park.
Defender: Hungarian (Vannay) / German (SS) (Hungarian 1st and 2nd Companies, Vannay Battalion and German SS-Freiwilligen-Kavallerie-Division 22 "Maria Theresia"/Hungarian Central Hungarist Combat Group/Kampfgruppe Europa)
The great Russian push was halted by MG and mortar fire, while the SUs were picked off by the Hungarian AA gun and the FT tank taken out by the AT gun. We discussed the game afterwards and came to the conclusion that the OBA Smoke might have changed everything, had it been used a turn earlier to blind the defenders.
Phenomenal Russian CCPh on Turn 4 - 4 Close Combat DRs with 3 snake eyes!

One of the most exciting games in recent memory. Came down to the final rally phase with my Russian squad needing to possess and then in DFPh destroy the 75L ATG. Of course, I rolled a 6 and failed ot posses. Drama and excitement from the first turn to the very end! Highly Recommended!

Russians made a strong push up the northern edge of the map, with only a light force coming in from the west. Between mines, two Hungarian MMG nests, the AA gun, and the mortar, the western force had their hands full. One tin can was lost in the west to the AA gun before the crew was broken and forced to abandon it, and another immobilized in the north (ESB?). Meanwhile the Russians lost their FT, while the Hungarians lost their mortar. But Turn 3 was a great turn for the Russian horde, expelling the Germans completely from their strongpoints north of the rail station. The OBA still had yet to be used as the Russians were scared of smoking in the two yet unknown fortified locations. Turn 4 saw the Russians smash their OT-34 into a building across from the rail station and fry a well-stacked Axis hex, but the much sought after AT gun finally showed its face on a fortified upper level and scored a CH, frying the FT tank. At this point though there was just too much Russian muscle on their doorstep and, with the OBA imminently about to enshroud the station in smoke, the Axis threw up the white flag.

Used Russian balance. Slow & cautious approach by Russians gained CVP Conditions first, then hard push for 4 more VC without trying for the Building Control condition.

The Soviets drove across the north edge and evicted the Axis from the victory point buildings. A critical hit on the PaK40 gained more points. The Axis conceded on turn 5.

My second playing of this - went down to the last turn again and just sneaked in by killing a couple of squads to achieve the CVP condition as well as building control ones.

Game went down to last CC phase with Russians making 3 of the VC but coming up short by 1 building hex on the fourth! Felt it was a struggle all the time and some poor dice didn't help, but on reflection a good scenario...

Went to the last turn. Finally found the AT gun in desperate attempt for a fourth VC after assault on the White villa petered out without gaining access to the fortified location. Two squads pinned or broken adjacent to gun crew preventing capture....
Had to resort to VBM freeze and sacrifice all armour to get there.

Steve shows me how the Russian player avoids high casualties in the first two turns. Think lots of SU-76 VBM.

An up front Axis defense slowed down the Russians enough that they couldn't meet the VC.

Another excellent scenario ruined by the VASL dice bot.
Seems pro Hungarian, but was fun until the dice bot decided that one player was going to roll less than 6 for everything and the other player 8 or higher. Seen this happen too often now.
