The road to Nijmegen and Arnhem became the scene of many dramatic events. While the 1st Airborne Division was being annihilated in Arnhem, XXX Corps, desperate to reach the Rhine River and rescue its comrades, was behind schedule. The Germans had other ideas and formed Sperrverband (“blocking force”) Harzer to contain the British drive. Without the threat of Allied air cover, the terrain was perfectly suited to defensive operations. It would cost the British dearly to move against the bend in the road between Nijmegen and Arnhem formed by the town of Elst on what the Allies called “the Island.”
Attacker: British (C Company, 1st Battalion, The Worcestershire Regiment, 214 Brigade, 43rd Wessex Division and C Squadron, 4/7 Dragoon Guards, 8th Armoured Brigade)
Defender: German (SS) (SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 21, Kampfgruppe Knaust)
British wedged themselves along the roas. SS shredded them with fire. Panzerswreck took out a lead tank. SS had great dice rolls and delayed the Britisg advance, easily. German win.

Gerard diced himself, rolling a number of boxcars to gack his Panther gun and decimate his infantry. I took the Panther down with APDS from the Firefly as it tried to relocate. When he took down his own HMG position with two ‘12’s, he conceded.

The British Shermans drove through the building and the mill providing smoke cover to the infantry. A panzerschrek survived and burnt out two tanks before retreating away. With higher MG firepower, the SS were able to keep at bay the British troops. The Panther destroyed the threatening Firefly, but a Sherman was still able to launch smoke on the German buildings. The British advanced in the center, but the Germans were still holding the ground with better terrain cover. Then the British began to attack North through the orchard and the grain with correct progress, in a slow rotating movement.. The Panther tried to slow them but malfed the gun. The last Sherman tried to attack the HMG nest but was destroyed by a panzerfaust. But firing a panzerfaust in a building with the backblast broke all the Germans and destroyed the firer. The British advanced all troops in the grain with enough firepower to win the day. A very technical scenario.

Solid game - all AFV dead. Close fighting - went to last turn and Brits could not get enough FP in range for a win.

Managed a middle push and stall while circling around both sides. Got a lucky crit on the Panther knocking it out. Fighting till last round for a marginal win.

Split my troops into three groups (North, Middle, and South) and moved onboard. The south group struggled to effectively engage while the other two groups ended up merging over time. The south group pinning his southern forces and had a critical CC they won allowing them to see the VC hex while the north overwhelmed the Germans added by prep fired smoke on the German's kill stack. Strong victory for the British.

I had trouble getting Smoke on the German positions, got impatient and pushed forward too fast. The result was more broken British squads than I could rally. The Firefly MA malfunctioned on its first shot, so the Panther moved up and killed it. Two attempts by Shermans to flank the Panther failed, and the HMG kept my depleted force at bay. Even though I didn't get any FP on the victory hex, it was a very exciting game. Lesson learned: slow and steady with SMOKE!

The British divided their infantry in two groups. The Northern one was to circle around the SS defense and reach the objective. The Southern one was meant to fix the defense. Whereas the Shermans entered through the road to help blow out the SS. A panzerfaust silenced one with a critical hit and the just arrived Panther destroyed two more. The last Sherman tried to flank the SS by moving into the mill but got bogged. The Northern British group was close to his objective but the Panther and a SS squad were still there. With the cover of smoke discharged by the mortar, the British assaulted the SS and the panzer. However, the odds turn on the Panther which disrupted the attack. After destroying the southern British group, the advanced SS troops retreat back and prevent the British the win by routing some of them. With only 12 FP in LOS of the objective, the British lost the battle.

My Brrtish tarted poorly, on the first shot, the German killed an MMC. From there, it was very chaotic for the British. Altho not much was left of the German defender in the enf, his stauch defense right from the start slowed me down to the point wher I was only able to place 12 FP on the Q15 hexes. As a player I ?HAVE to remember to use smoke, and as a player I need to worry about the Panzerfaust and Panzerschrek.
Very tense, his panzer was able to break the much needed 4-6-7 on the last turn to prevent my win.
Tense and fun.

Tough on Germans - had good luck to kill 2 Shermans and opponent bogged another in T1. My low rolls helped break opponent PMC in Turn 2. Don't think my infantry could have held out...

I was defending very staunchly up until the 76LL came out of his well defended hole. From there, it became nail biting. He was able to secure 18FP on the hex at the last turn.
