Fall Rot (Case Red) commenced as the second part of the German conquest of France. The attack across the upper Aisne River front had led the untested 4th Polizei Division to assault the positions along the Ardennes Canal. One bastion of French defense that needed to be overcome was the hill top village of Voncq. The attack began with a successful crossing of the canal at many points with many footbridges laid under fire at many crossing points. Once across the canal, the attack began in earnest.
