As Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk commenced, the British clung desperately to their hastily manned strongpoints along all major roads leading to the channel port. At Wormhoudt, southeast of Dunkirk, the British made a determined stand, fortifying the nearby chateau and surrounding houses in the town. Trenches were dug and guns sited. The attack was first launched by SS infantry of the Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler Division, courageous to the point of reckless.
