The Soviet offensive in Transylvania continued as the Red Army pushed across the borders of Hungary and Romania. The Romanians, now fighting against the Axis powers, had established a defensive line near the Maros river, in the vicinity of the town of Paulis. Bolstered with Russian 76 and 122 millimeter guns, the Romanians prepared for another assault by the Hungarian 1st Armored Division.
