Overview:

Brigadier General Norman Cota had decided to tag along on a mission to capture two bridges that the Germans might use to sever the tie between US forces in Carentan and Omaha Beach. After crossing the Vire River, the two companies encountered heavy resistance and the total force was reduced to just 80 men. Capturing the bridges was not going to be possible. Around 6 pm, as Cota’s men were digging in northwest of Montmartin-en-Graignes, reinforcements arrived in the form of 60 men from Battalion I, Glider Infantry Regiment 327 who had been probing south from Carentan. Cota decided to take Montmartin instead, or risk being slaughtered out in the open in the dark.

2026-06-14(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM German winI drew the G.I.s in this bocage fight. It's a classic dig Krauts out of stone buildings mission. I pushed around Jim's left flank with the Glidermen. My throw Smoke and dash into Jim's MG fire netted me a bunch of broken MMC. For three turns, Jim's fire was hot! (He never activated my sniper, but rolled lots of 3's and 4's.) I only lost 2 HS and got good rally DRs, so by turn 5 I had closed in. Finally my PF and DF hit hard and I got into the VC rowhouses, but needed to take four building hexes in turn 6 and fell short. This one plays fast and fun! Jim: The key to success for the defenders is timing a last stand in V6 and U7. You need half your MMC there to hold out. I lost 76U9 and five HS in four turns, but low IFT rolls and dummy stacks drawing fire kept my defense intact. Then US fire from stacks in U9, S8 and X9 broke my MMC in V7 and it got very tense. In the end, my pinned 8-1 in U7 and a pinned 447 w/LMG in V6 held out and gave me the win. Very close - a good little scenario!
