The Soviet encirclement of the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad in mid-November posed a great risk to the entire southern half of the German front. Hitler refused evacuation of the pocket and ordered Gen. Manstein to organize a relief expedition. The newly arrived 8.Luftwaffenfelddivision were among the miscellaneous troops gathered and they disembarked at the city of Morozovsk on 25 November and moved eastward across the snow-swept steppes. They moved through the town of Nizhe Chirskaya, expecting to find retreating German troops of the Sixth Army. Instead men of the Luftwaffe ran headlong into the hastily constructed defensive positions of the Soviet pincers that had snapped shut around the German Sixth Army.
Attacker: German (Elements I./8.Luftwaffenfelddivision)
I rolled a 1 for the additional concealment counters, a bad start. The German mortars were hot, getting 5 critical hits. The Russian Sniper activated only twice, both times a 1, and both times only pinning the German sniper. The Germans played very aggressive and were able to exit more than enough EVP to win on the last turn.

I was Russian defender vs Germain Attacker. 4 hours to play. I set up defense across up front. My 9-1 leader with LMG in center. MMG back near middle building in trees for maximum range and affect. I was very lucky with my rolls in this game I lost 2 of 8 squads but overall held the field intact. Germain tried to slide his forces down the north side of the board but was not able to exit the required 9 VPs. His mortars never hit home, and my rolls were very good.
Lesson, Sanger. I should have placed more units in Sangers vs trees at setup. I did not consider the mortar.

The Germans have a lot of open ground to cross, but if they can survive and mass together they will have the opportunity for some big firegroups. The Russians must make the most of the few defenders they have, and hope they survive long enough for their reinforcements to get to the fight. In a scenario this small and dicey, one broken MG, lucky shot, or lucky sniper result can wreck the defender's game quickly. Theoretically the swirling snow should be good for the attacker, but in our case it severely hampered their return fire. German mortars could obviously create some issues for the defense, but the one that came onboard with the first wave saw its carrier broken never to return, and the second was never in position to cause many problems. German dice in general were pretty atrocious, suffering many +2/+3 snow rolls, and doing no better on their many MCs. The Russians did not have to take a single PTC/MC until Turn 4. Needless to say all went well for the defenders, and the frantic attempt to try and get even one unit close to sniffing the exit on the last turn proved abysmal.

The variable LV due to the snow was unkind to both sides. Morter went on a rate terror late and made it very close but Russians held on for the win - Germans exited 7 of the 9 points required.

Germans made a run along the north edge and managed to slip past a single 4-4-7 with an LMG. The Russian reinforcements came in on top of my escaping Luftwaffe boys. I managed to break 2 squads and then one last squad entered into CC with my pinned 9-1 and got stuck in Melee when they just wounded the 9-1. My boys made a final run for the exit and got 14 off for the win.

Finally FtF, but another setup mistake (too forward... should have set up much nearer the German exit zone). Snow "light dust" kept voiding residuals. And, last but not least, more mistakes entering reinforcements. I would play this again, keeping the Russian side, but trying a different defence.

The first turns were a real cakewalk for the Germans who progressed quite unmolested through the blowing snow. The arrival of a strong Russian reinforcements forced the Germans to change their plans and cross open fields under Russian fire. Several deadly shots stopped the German progress. On the last turn, there was still several opportunities to exit the required EVPs for the Germans. But neither the snow nor the accurate Russian shots helped. A KIA, a casualty MC and a wounded leader wiped out their dream of victory. Only 7 EVPs out of 9 needed made it.

A short scenario with many SSR. The issue of the game was decided by the IFT DR of the Russian fire lane in the last turn. I was pretty lucky on this one.
