The Fields of Black Gold	One of those scenarios where I could do no wrong, and everything Dave touched went sour. SS lost 1 squad KIA, but otherwise just marched up the hill, whilst the PzIIIs took the small hill with a pltn of infantry. By Russian turn 3 I was raking the hilltops with MG fire, killing squads outright. Dave hoisted the white flag.	Minedog
Second Thoughts	Friday Night Fight What a bloody affair! My SS conceded on American turn 7 when I had nothing to prevent the two remaining AFVs exiting to over-rule the multihex building I was still holding that was not a guaranteed prospect for the Amis. Second Thoughts	Interesting concept. The Americans are the scenario defenders but, in reality, will be doing most of the attacking. Herbert seized the stone building beside the stream but didn't threaten any of the other possible multi-hex buildings. Instead, he concentrated most of his force beside the road leading to the bridges. The Americans were able to seize only building held by the Germans and held on at the end despite misplaying by allowing the Germans a chance to enter the building in force on the final turn. Polka's Dance	Another good scenario from Lionel Colin. A highly recommended scenario. To play it well, both the attacker and the defender need to be familiar with the noble art of mobile warfare. Our scenario came down to the very last die roll in a melee, but getting there required every bit of our skill. Truly highly recommended. Also excellent as a tournament scenario, given its manageable playing time.	cosarara

Danish Crossroads	NOTE: Not sure if it is part of the scenario design or an erratum - the 3x Danish 457s have "Assault Fire" printed on the counter art of the scenario card. The SSR mentions nothing about Danish units being granted "Assault Fire". Ath the same time, the 3x Danish 458 do not have "Assault Fire" printed on the counter art. We played it as if the 3x Danish 457 in fact do have "Assault Fire" as printed. This is a short 5 Turn scenario in which the Germans, consisting of 10 squads, an 8-1, two 8-0s an MMG and LMG, supported by three thin skinned PSW must clear and occupy a two hex crossroads. In the penultimate turn, they are reinforced by one PzKw IIF. The Danes defend with 8 squads, an 8-1, an 8-0, one MMG, one LMG and two 20L AT-Guns. The primary challenge for the Germans is that they will have to cross a lot of open ground to get to the village. The only cover they have are some central patches of woods, which are likely be defended by the Danish to delay the attackers. The crossroads is surrounded by a number of stone buildings, which serve as fine defensive positions for the Danish against the Germans, who won't have any comparable favorable terrain. While the German PSWs do have a sD, it's number is 6, so it is all but certain that Smoke can be created in this manner. At the same time, due to the Victory Conditions, the Germans cannot really put his AFV to the risk of being taken out while they cannot really get along not doing so. For the Danish, the question is how much of his resources he is going to spend on the "delaying" part and how much on the "stone building" defense. The broken morale of the Danish is low and they have an ELR of 2. This leaves some precarious choices. The German PSWs ar thin-skinned but two M-35 20L AT-Guns are not hard hitters. Hitting a German AFV might prove easier than to actually knock it out. This combined with the importance of the AFV for the Germans creates much of the tension of this scenario. The time frame for the Germans is tight and the Danish move last. I played the attacking Germans in this one. The challenge was to get my force forward without being shot to pieces in open ground and to get the PSWs out of harms way, for which it was necessary to find the HIP AT-Gun (the other one sets up non HIP). Since the Danish Leaders and SW may set up as if it were Night (i.e. noted on a side paper), it was not immediately apparent were the MGs' threat would lie - both for infantry and vehicles. Simply charging across open ground or plowed fields with nowhere to rout and rally to seemed out of the question, but getting a toehold in the central patches of woods, where my opponent had placed a considerable delaying force proved difficult and was time consuming. Basically, the Danish had no losses until Turn 3 and the Germans had a lot of troubles. This was aided by the Danish rolling a couple of 3s and 4s, one combination of which knocked out one of the PSWs in an important situation just short of reaching the backfield to create havoc there. I had lost a second PSW before to one of the Guns. So by the end of Turn 3 I felt that I had very little chances to win this one, as the Danish force was mainly intact. Fortunes began to change when I managed to break his 8-1, 458+MMG combo and one of his AT-Guns malfed. This allowed me to craft some paths for movement by imposing Target Selection Limits at some cost. However, my central push was gaining momentum - the question was if I had enough time left. Just coinciding with the arrival of my PzKw IIF, the Danish managed to repair the malfed AT-Gun, but at least my tank had a frontal AF of 3 instead of the AF 1 of other remaining PSW. Three CCs occurred which evolved into Melees. Luck was on my side here for sure, because two of three Melees had the odds against me, but everyone survived on both sides, thus depriving the Danish to do anything useful with his units locked in them. This provided the essential openings for the German final push: Both ATGs were locked in Melee and thus their threat to my two remaining AFV neutralized for the moment.The Danish had only little infantry left who swamped by the German infantry coming in and could not also prevent my two AFV occupying the crossroads. I won one of the Melees, establishing the Germans in a stone building, My "killer stack" of 8-1, 467+LMG had taken up positions in another. The second Melee persisted, while the Danes won the third Melee. However, they were unable to threaten my AFV due to a wall of German units in between. So with some luck, I was able to turn what I had determined to be a lost case by the end of Turn 3 and finally snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. von Marwitz	von Marwitz

Wisembach Roadblock	This was a fast little scenario. Germans made a speedy approach but lost a squad 1st turn due to bail out. Belgian MMG firelanes slowed down northern approaches but southern approaches quickly overtook the MG nest. Things seemed strong in German favor as Belgian troops were mostly routed and falling back, but towards the last turn Germans realized most of their squads could not make the exit point in time. It came down to last turn preventing Belgian exits to win but a lone Belgian SMC made it off board to secure the W.	feralhuntsman

88s at Zon	Almost immediately a German 88 came to life eliminating an American squad, but that would be the first and last time a German 88 would fire this day (the next shots fired by either gun were "boxcars" and none would repair for the entire scenario). While the initial American attack stalled, the Germans failed to capitalize; leaving a squad and its leader able to rally back. The Germans moved up to attempt to stall the Americans from entering the town. As the Americans pushed in, a long German half-squad in the forward position kept a bulk of the Americans busy and moving at a cautious pace. Surviving withering fire from all sides, the half-squad, having done their job, finally pinned and succumbed in close combat. As the Americans gained a better foothold, they began to overwhelm the Germans defenses. With the 88s knocked out, their crews working frantically to get them online, the Americans swept through the town virtually unmolested. Finally, with Americans in sight, the crews abandoned their guns, took up arms and, along with a beaten down half-squad, did their best to hold off the Americans. But it was not enough as two companies from 2nd battalion and one company from 1st battalion survived the German defenses at Zon (VASL Log)	toddgrx

Guerra Relámpago	Things started a bit roughly for the Peruvians when I broke a MA, had a tank shocked by the mortar, and bungled a CC vs a PB. Turn 2 saw better progress made when the PB was dispatched, the remainder of the Ecuadorian dummy stacks was exposed, and the shocked tank recover and drive to safety. Turn 3 saw further inroads pushing into the first set of stone buildings, taking down two squads and an 8-0. The first of too many POWs was taken, granting precious deployment. The west side of the stream was toppled on Turn 4 rounding up three more squads and an 8-1 as POWs, and killing another squad and the other 8-1 who held a vital spot in R5 guarding the bridge. The Peruvians saw a squad-laden truck flamed up by the mortar, which now found itself bookended by tanks. By now three tanks had broken their MAs, but it was their superb MGs that really mattered, and those were all intact. The Peruvians blew up the mortar at the top of Turn 5. Had this not occurred I think they would've conceded, as Scott (as he is wont to do) had a very well-placed gun, threatening both infantry and tanks equally. Protected by their vanguard tanks, this allowed the Peruvians to pour over the bridge in force. But time was running low, and there were still many Ecuadorians to clear from their comfy stone buildings. The Ecuadorians knocked out their first tank with a well-placed MG shot, but by the end of the turn the attrition continued, with them losing another 1.5 squads. Time was ticking though, and getting personnel off was going to be difficult. Turn 6 had a couple important shots (P3 and R1) that had to succeed or another concession was in the works. Both succeeded, allowing the Peruvians to push some of their southern force toward the exit. The tanks moved behind the Ecuadorians, causing rout issues, and by the end of the turn they were down another three squads and 8-0. They had only one good order squad, another locked in melee, and three DM brokies. Hope was with them when two of their three squads somehow managed to bounce back, but was again dashed when their studly 447 fell to point blank tank MGs, and the unit stuck in melee was busted. Then, in a bizarre twist, one of their freshly rallied squads turned berserk (the Peruvians having begrudgingly finally declared NQ), the 7-0 who rallied them turned later, and he then converted the other rallied HS. This left no good order Ecuadorians on the board, but with their half of the turn remaining they would still have to be dealt with. FPF betrayed them when the HS failed and the squad reduced to a pathetic 126, and them and the 7-0 were easily dispatched in CC. This was a really tense game that came right down to the wire. A freshly interesting slice of the war, and Chris Olden usually delivers on his designs.	buser333

Panther Cull	In the final player turn, an adjacent 548 survived the Cromwell’s bounding fire, found a PF on the start MP. It scored a hit and burn. At that point, the Allies conceded holding 3 of 4 needed VP.	Houlie
Farmyard Affray	Learned from my first attempt and was a little more subtle and careful in the approach. Michael conceded before his reinforcements arrived on the basis that my Canadians had taken the buildings and were able to begin the withdrawal unimpeded.	Dave
First Dance	Chaotic scenario lots going on. Plenty of opportunity to attack and counterattack to get enough VP to win. Our playing had the French zapping two AFV in the German first turn and the Germans returning the favor in the second. The Czech tanks swung momentum to the Germans but the reinforcing French tanks stabilized things especially when B11 started to plague the German armor. In the last half turn I was able to get the "entry" road hex pairs to pull off a win.	nebel
Silence That Gun	This was Kris' 3rd game and first in about a year. I took the Americans and had some luck. Hero threw DC onto gun crew breaking it. But Americans were short CVP. Shortly thereafter the Fortified bldg was discovered and Americans quickly surrounded it. A lucky 12 German squad MC sealed thebl deal. A lot was covered and Kris did well.	asevenson
Farmyard Affray	Second playing of this interesting scenario, with unusual VCs that require the Canadians to move into 2+ buildings then run back to defend their base. I had the better DRs early on so achieved the first part without much trouble, and just managed to get the required 7VPs back by my last turn. Even so, the Germans could have snatched victory had their tank managed to get into my hex to put my units in melee (hence not good order). But a last-ditch PIAT shot denied them.	Andy_Bagley
Farmyard Affray	Double One 2026 Main Tournament Round 3 my second playing of this, again as the Canadians. we did select sides randomly. Peter unfortunately left the woods path/road open which meant I was able to charge round for the back most victory building and from there push for the solitary building at the back of the enclosed farmyard. That group also include both piats to be in position to intercept the reinforcing tank. I was able to withdraw enough forces and when the afv fell to a piat peter conceded.	Paul Legg
Air Assault on Drvar	A very difficult task for the Germans, having to reorganize after landing. Two victory conditions are possible, but eliminating Tito should be by far the most difficult to achieve. The allied reinforcements took a heavy toll on Germans. They were way too far from victory. Far From Home	1936 tournament final. IMO a very hard scenario for the Republicans to win. The turn 3 reinforcements are not strong enough to make much of a difference and the turn 4 reinforcements come in too late to make it across the boards to the Nationalists village. The Nationalists have more end game VPs than the Republicans. So if the Nationalists take a hold 2 or 3 buildings that earn VPs on the first three turns, they don't have to push any further. 11th Company Counterattack	Nice little scenario - decided in the most part by one of the Finnish tanks with low ammo, and then a malf'd MA, fixed the gun and had two critical hits. Hot dice for the Finnish is a great combo!	Dave
Massacre au Paradis	Fun enough scenario. The 81mm mortar was the star of the show, helping to break almost every British squad that attempted to hold the front. In the end I was able to bring a couple of squads around the rear and the British couldn't fall back and hold the buildings at the same time.	Dave
Grappling Glowaczow	Snuck up the hill and made fairly slow progress but the German tanks were punished for being a little too aggressive and that left me with 3 of the Polish AFVs to bypass freeze our way to victory!	Dave
Soldiers of Construction	A strange scenario that probably needs some clarification around the timing of the VC, definition of a "clear runway" and rubble-type used at the start. Certainly unique, but ultimately one that is worthy of one play for novelty sake more than ASL-entertainment. My US Seabees pretty much focused solely on clearance attempts and ignored the Japanese bearing down on them - but the Japanese have a tough time of it from our observations.	Dave
Vossenack Church	Second go at this scenario, very close and exciting game this time, and one I was lucky to win. The Germans advanced steadily despite taking losses to some good American shots, so that on the last German turn I had just two SMCs remaining in the church, both of them being attacked in CC. But the Germans then rolled a 12 on the first of these, allowing me to sneak upstairs and deny them the building control they needed.	Andy_Bagley
Bounty Hunters	Very enjoyable scenario, although it took us longer than expected due to encountering a lot of rarely-used rules which we had to look up. The Chinese attacked mainly in the south and reached the main village but took heavy loses including one tank destroyed and the other immobilised. They would also capture all three of the other buildings, although had not found my HIP HSs hiding in the rear. After 3.5 turns we had to call it a draw as we were out of time, but it was unclear anyway who was winning and the result could have gone either way.	Andy_Bagley

There seems little the Japanese can do against an American defence that largely ignores the Japanese attack in favour of clearing the runways. My attempted 'left hook' was just too slow, and the only alternative seemed to be a Turn 1 banzai charge, which i felt would have been suicidal.	Andy_Bagley
Coiled to Strike	Very difficult attack for the Germans due to their piecemeal reinforcements and naked approach. They get two onboard smoke generators to kick things off. I used one to smoke in a PB, but the other had none. That won't get you far when breaking here is like the desert. Thus I cautiously advanced by men (setup entirely in the east), maintaining concealment, until support could arrive. Turn 2 saw my men venture onto Board DW-3a, searching for mines to pave the way for the armor. No surprise we knocked out the dug-in T-50 with our StuGs who ganged up on it. My reinforcing infantry rode in on trucks from the west, congregating in the middle of the board, and on foot from the east. We lost a squad to add to the HS lost on Turn 1. but lost all three of our light armor (two outright to the INF gun, the other immobilized). Turn 3 saw our infantry surge through the field toward the hill, but we were having trouble getting to the first set of buildings due to numerous wire and mines. A lucky break was found when his heroic 9-2 was killed by a bomb, as well as 1.5 squads. We also sent the INF crew and HMG squad running to mommy. Turn 4 saw our men congregate around the base of the hill, and us grab our first building, but the loss of the planes was going to be no small hurdle to overcome. Another fortunate break went our way when gusts caused a fire in one of his still-hidden AT gun's hexes, eventually burning it up. We permanently lost an HMG. What was a fairly interesting game up to this point grew really stagnant due to the combination of losing our planes, the arrival of the Russian one, his very effective reverse slope defense, and lack of smoke (all weapons were out by this point). A HS turned fanatic running through the mined buildings as he grabbed two more. Turn 5 saw us give up the hopeless attempt to get to the 2nd level hills, instead veering toward the lightly defended VC area around the small hill. Turn 6 saw another diverting force try to move in force to grab the far building. Despite some fantastic shooting from a Marder with seemingly endless HE eliminating all but one squad on the small hill, both these branching attacks were slowly but surely being depleted. When Turn 8 prep was absolutely abysmal the Germans threw in the towel. In retrospect, I think the Germans have to have a show of force against all VC objectives from the get-go, and go balls to the wall out the gate. The lack of rally terrain and eventual arrival/loss of the planes should foil all but the most determined/lucky attacks though.	buser333

Show of Force	FNF game. The defence got off to a great start when the German Tiger stopped in a location that had been bore sighted by a T-34. It is one of the obscure parts of the rules that a DI shot can use bore sighting even though it can't use acquisition. The T-34 duly got the hull hit that it needed for the immobilization and, even though it was destroyed then the Tiger returned fire, it was a worthwhile exchange. A second panzer was taken out by a rear ATR shot By turn three, the Russian defences were still largely intact and Chip decided that it would be impossible to clear all the victory buildings and conceded. Hill 27	Double One 2026 - Mini AM I setup most units out of potential LOS, the only units were half-squads manning the light mortars.. The Japanese were unable to generate smoke which hampered their efforts to ascend the hill.	Paul Legg

Jungle Citadel	Japan setup a panji line across left side before the first objective along with two hip squads waiting in ambush. Dean tried using smoke down the middle to obscure his troops but then realized the cost in movement it was causing as I double down with some Japanese smoke as well. He has extremely bad luck crossing the panjis as the found almost every one and failed the check almost every time. He then funneled an over stacked mass of Chinese into the jungle hex right into my HIP ambush that just annihilated them. With a vast majority reduced or broken from panjis and half a company's worth killed from CC, he conceded as he did not have enough critical mass to continue forward.	feralhuntsman

Hill 27	Consensus seems to be that the Japanese probably need the balance to make this one a decent fight. I didn't have balance, nor did I get any smoke/WP from my mortars, and against a well-prepared Japanese defence it was always going to be an uphill struggle (pun intended!). The Americans used reverse slope positions which made it very hard to banzai, and took a heavy toll on my Japanese trying to advance up the hill. By turn four I had taken a few Level 2 hexes but clearly wasn't going to achieve the number I needed, so conceded.	Andy_Bagley

Duel in the Desert	This is a classic meeting engagement. In this case, the die roll decides who enters first. The setup is structured so that the advantage enjoyed by the first player to enter and take up position is offset by the fact that, having reduced mobility, he will not be able to make use of the desert terrain features that allow both sides to go Hull Down, namely sand dunes and deirs. The player entering second, on the other hand, can concentrate his Schwerpunkt on a specific point of the map and, precisely for that reason, can go Hull Down. The British have smaller-calibre guns, and therefore lower penetration, but slightly stronger armour than the Germans, so the armoured component is fairly well balanced. In our game I entered first, concentrating on the right-hand side and trying to control the left from the centre of the map, with the idea of reaching the dunes in two turns. I sent the en portée forward on the first turn with ESB, unloaded one infantry platoon into the deir on the right, and kept the support weapons and another platoon on the trucks while waiting to see how Fred would move. The Germans went Hull Down across almost the entire map, concentrating their effort to counter mine. What followed was therefore a battle of attrition, from which I emerged victorious. As many as four AFVs broke their MA on turn 4. When a long-range shot from a 2 FP MG destroyed a truck with two squads on board, the CVP gap became impossible to close — 32 for me, 14 for him — and he therefore conceded. A very nice scenario, and one that exemplifies desert scenarios well.	cosarara
Strayer's Strays	A game memorable or the effectiveness of the German sniper, who rolled four 1's on his first four sniper DRs. My plan had been to run through the orchard and exit that end of the board, whilst using a squad + MMG with leader support to cut off the Germans trying to shift in that direction. But the sniper completely devastated that plan, breaking the squad (twice) and the leader. Even so, the Germans needed a lucky 1+1 shot with their last roll of the game, which managed to break one squad hence denying me sufficient exit VPs.	Andy_Bagley
With Tigers on Their Tail	Strange scenario. Both Jeff's Tigers were set up in the eastern hills, and he chose to split his force about evenly to cover the east and west. My first entry area was hard west and, unbeknownst to him at the time, this was the area I would focus on the rest of the game. I knocked out a Lang situated on the northernmost Level 2 hill in the west, and immobilized and forced abandonment of a StuG guarding the east/west road on the same hill. There was still a StuG guarding the northern road there, but I was mostly ignoring it and making a board edge creep. Turn 3 saw me start to break a trail through the western woods. Turn 4 saw me exploit this. His eastern force was still holding steady, having to be prepared for a possible entry by my Turn 5 reinforcements. The last two turns had seen no desire by either of us to engage the other, but Turn 5 saw me start to make my move. By the end there was a blazed-up StuG, Turan, another recalled, and two squads and a 6+1 captured. This of course allowed some serious Russian deployment. Turn 6 saw the first Russian casualty when a Turan knocked out one of my T-34s, but it didn't see the end of the turn alive.. Turn 7 saw me make another big push, and 2.5 squads, a 9-1, and another Turan were the casualties. I lost a piddly GAZ-67B. He had of course driven off 5VP worth of trucks earlier, but had not exited anything since. With only three turns remaining, he would need at least three AFVs to prevent me from just making an uncontested beeline for the exit on the board edge, and I had also started driving around the eastern side of the Board 50 hill. Not thinking he would be able to exit enough points and also contain me Jeff decided to throw in the towel. I was thankful too, as this was one of the most boring slog fests I had ever played. Tooz is often a great designer, but sometimes his love of the large can overwhelm him at times.	buser333

No Dubno	The scenario is scripted around the possible attack axes. The map leaves very little room for maneuver, and what can be done is easily predictable. This brings the Russian little room for maneuver his tanks under the fire of the German guns, where the armor gap really makes itself felt. There is no contest. The Russian tanks simply have no chance against the German AFVs: their armor is far too light. In practice, the game was over on Turn 1, when the KV — the piece on which the whole Russian attack depends — broke its gun and then rolled a 6 on the repair attempt. Dawn Assault at Mednoye	Germans squeaked out a win with effective shooting from the one unmalfed AT gun and rolling a number of 3s in the final zerg rush. The Russian was handicapped by solitary tanks that declined to move and conscripts that declined to rally.	aiabx

Escape from Derna	German used set-up found in on-line AAR, consisting of an arc of defenders in the forward hexes of their set-up zone. The guns were HIP in scrub. The British led with the tanks, which laid down smoke and dust, so that the following 88's could set-up near the board edge. Several vehicles bogged in the shellhole hex, but none immobilized thanks to one tank that held back to push. The German AC came in groups of 2 or 3, spread out across the front. The Germans decided to head east behind the hillock, the tanks taking HD positions behind. All of the AC were destroyed over the next few turns, to one destroyed British tank and two immobilized. The 88's neutralized the two western AT guns, and the third, to the east, was overrun by a flanking carrier. The infantry unloaded as soon as they reached the top of the escarpment, and none were lost throughout the scenario. Poteau Party	When I saw the amount of German material coming at me, I wondered how the Americans show as favored in ROAR and why I gave the balance. The CVP cap is the answer. One Panther dead is a quarter of the CVP cap. The Americans won this match when the Germans had gone half way across the board. We had heavy falling snow from the first turn onward.	mtrodgers99

The Bridge at Ramelle	My Americans rolled extremely poorly on the initial Defensive Fire. Dan's Germans created a Hero and KIA'd my hero in the Belltower and broke the 7-0. I MALF'd my first Bazooka shot and that was game. I conceded after Dan's Tiger got a crit hit on a pinned 7-4-7 on the bridge, which KIA's the 7-4-7 and destroyed the SET DC. The Lion, Driven	Came down to last player turn, Three CCs near the southern board edge failed to achieve any results leaving the Japanese “not in GO” adjacent to the VC road. The FINAL CC was a 248 that advanced into J2 with a 347. The Japanese obtained ambush, but Chad had expertly blocked all VC hexes forcing an attack (vs. an ambush withdrawal). The Publications page has had a minor face-lift and I've amended the scenario recommendations to exclude scenarios recommended that have the same name as scenarios you've already played before.

Site updates!

There's some updates to the scenario pages and the "My Page" that help find fun scenarios to play, based on other player's recommendations.

On the scenario page, you can see other scenarios that have been rated highly, based upon user ratings who have rated the initial scenario highly. (It's all a bit complex but it does try to quell the problem of good, popular scenarios outranking lesser played scenarios that might have a higher correlation).

On your "My Page" I've updated the games played and the publications owned tables to be a little more useful, and made an effort to speed up the rendering of the page, too. There's also a scenario recommender on there that takes into account scenarios that you have rated highly, and the input of other players - and checking that you haven't already played that scenario before (no promises on scenarios that have been released multiple times though, currently!)
