Requiem for a DreadnaughtThe German attack penetrated and supressed the big tanks - they fell easiyl really!

Defiance on Hill 30American mortar was totally ineffective and I struggled to prevent the Germans gaining a toehold in the woods. A lucky sniper held up some Germans for a turn or so. Pushed out of all but one building but reos came on turn four which saved the day. Had some lucky die rolls that managed to save me from disaster. Held on for a draw in the CVP score. Nicho11

Hill 621The Germans ran for the hill and tried to set up a reverse slope defense with some tanks up on the hill. The Russians were able to catch enough of the fleeing Army Group Centre to cause chaos and with not much to slow them down, the Russians were able to swarm the hill with infantry. We called the game in turn 7. dmareske
Scouts OutUsed US balance but Germans had extra HS south of river.
Interesting situation as US has tremendous firepower but are fragile. Was able to smoke HMG and get to river. On turn 3 the US moved to cross and the German HMG broke on a FL shot. It repaired next turn but the loss in FP enabled the US to cross the river T3 and get into several hill hexes T4. ASL eOpen2026

Might Makes RightPlayed this one very aggressively as the Norwegians, as the CVP limit is very low when you take into account all of the open ground around. A well-placed MMG with the 9-2 can absolutely devastate the attacker as the Alpine Hills can create interesting blind spots that can't be attacked by the Germans at the distances they'd like. Special shout out goes to the Norwegian Squad that found itself in Melee after being ambushed, pinned, and attacked by an 8-1 + Squad and got hit with a wonderful boxcars. He then drew attention for 3 turns, and was helped by a sniper killing the leader he was stuck with. Further reinforcements never managed to clear him and other minor losses added up to a loss. A fast-ish scenario, its worth playing a couple of times. Jobbo_Fett
Black Day in HattenThe German crew went down to a rogue sniper in game. The gun covered the two VC locations in the back. After failing to rally twice, the crew rolled 12 on his third attempt. Without that critical asset, the American TD proved too much and prevailed. Larry

Ramsey's ChargeAmis chose not to conduct a charge, but did eliminate one Jap HS in AFPh. They made a mistake not sending units north to interdict the Japs crossing the stream, as without danger they were able to hot foot it and get to and across the bridge. Another Jap HS was blasted away Turn 2, and the temple was captured, but their substantial reinforcements approached fast unmolested behind cover of the walls before the Amis were able to get much over there. With the Japs still threatening to reclaim the temple, the Amis weren't able to shift their entire force west, most of whom made their way through the gap between the bamboo and swamp. Start of Turn 3 saw the Amis lose a squad to a HS for the Japs, and on the bottom of the turn the Jap mortars got busy laying smoke cover. A banzai caught the Amis offboard near the bridge, and they traded another squad for a Jap HS. They survived heavy advance fire, and were even able to surprise the Japs in CC, but chose to withdraw to the safety of the palm gap. Meanwhile in the east the Japs reclaimed the temple, and busted up the squad next door to them. Turn 4 saw a common theme continue when the Amis traded a squad for a HS. Japs ran out of smoke on their half of the turn, but lucked out breaking the 9-2 and accompanying squad. This opened the door for yet another banzai, and when defensive fire was unable to halt anyone the Amis conceded. This started off interesting enough due to its unique situation, but quickly developed into whomever controlled the bridge first would win. One playing of this was enough for me. buser333
Kicked to the CurbA lot of open ground to cover or at least a lot of 4 even shots to endure as the Poles. Setting up eight squads per board limited the Poles' ability to concentrate their forces. My MMG kill stack lost a squad and MMG pinned on the first turn and by the time it caught up they all broke but the leader which rolled snakes to send them all berserk. Poles couldn't pass a basic MC despite good morale and this made advancing difficult. By turn five I hadn't captured any of the Russian buildings and threw in the towel. Nicho11

Hunters From The CloudsAn expanded, and slightly better, version of "Tumult From The Clouds". I appreciate the extra board and the fact that none of the objective buildings are Stone.

I really have to get it in my head to drop further away from the enemy as the Germans would be better helped by using the movement they'll need to get to the objective to find their weapons and having a more useful 5 FP per Squad. The pillbox placement is pretty tough to choose with the expanded map area...

In Front of the StormA very interesting scenario. I was playing the French and feel like we had a lot of win probability movement just within the last half turn. My armor tried to make its way around the AT minefields but in the process lost one AFV and the other was lost to the 37L, probably due to my AFV being forced to move in VPBM which slowed him down significantly.

A great little scenario with a lot of set up options for the defending Germans.

A thought for some play balance (since it leans a little German) would be to add an SSR which gives the German 37L a HE depletion number, like 9 or 10 or reduce its ROF to 2 when firing HE. The Gun was a bit too devasting to my infantry on the bridge, largely due to ROF of 3.

Overall, a great scenario and pretty balanced.

The attached log is the last half turn where the French tried to obtain Control of the last two VC hexes. Of note, it could be a fun half turn to play from the beginning, because both sides have hard choices to make. (VASL Log)

Dean's DefianceInteresting scenario with the North Koreans coming from everywhere and trying to exit. The Americans played a patient defense. The 10-3 stayed with a squad and an MMG which did cause some damage, but I think putting him with the BAZ 50 might be more destructive. The T34s stayed away from the bazookas mostly, not giving them a good shot. The Americans made good use of wall advantage which limited the use of the NK reinforcements from SSR 4. dmareske

Battlin' BuckeyesThings didn't start so well for Magnus when after the first turn both his BAZ were lying on the ground unattended after I knocked out both wielders. My tanks were very cautious, positioning themselves in case of a pinching entry of his tanks from the north or east. Turn 2 saw my 9-0 get brained by a sniper and break the gun on one of my tanks. But it was no shock when he chose to enter his tanks to support the village. Turn 3 saw me continue to muscle my way into town, eliminating an Ami squad and stunning one of his M7s in the process. Turn 4 got decidedly more bloody as we traded squads on the first half of the turn and I immobilized and knocked out his stunned M7. Not knowing which of two stacks was his real at-start M7 I was very cautious with my own tanks, but I figured I had a tank to burn and used one to create a land bridge across the street to the temple. No surprise when I lost him on the bottom of the turn, but I did dispatch his 8-1 and a HS. Turn 5 was all Japs as I eliminated a squad and a crew, and finally exposed the dummy M7. With just one more building in the east to grab to get to 22 I was ready to sit back on my laurels and let him come to me. Which of course he did on Turn 6. Trying desperately to take back the temple he lost two squads, while I lost one and burned a DC. He also went tank hunting, swarming one of mine with an M7 and M18. But when my sniper brained the crew of the other M17 it was all a moot point whether he'd knock me out or not and he threw up the white flag. Not really the most exciting game, as it got a bit static after I grabbed the northern buildings. buser333

War Without Mercy Bongiovanni
War Without MercyFun scenario where I came unstuck by completely misreading the defensive set up. There were so few units covering the exit option that I assumed that Eric must have gone for the HIP group option and that they were lying in wait to ambush the Russians if they went for the board edge. As it transpired, Eric had misread the card and was defending the wrong edge! The Russians accordingly attacked into the teeth of the German defences and had two Tiger tanks and assorted elite units whose arrival I could look forward to on turn four. Lots of crazy stuff happened. For the Russians, one leader went berserk while trying to rally another leader and the other leader decided to join him in the suicide charge. For the Germans, Eric managed to pull off the unique feat of malfunctioning both of his onboard guns with their first shots. In the end, the Russians couldn't clear the victory zone and I conceded on the penultimate turn. Dougban

Far From HomeNationalist forces roared forward to attack the critical bridge near the Republican village. Republican armour counter-attacked, ignoring the Nationalist armour and concentrating on the infantry. Alas, too much ground had been given up and the Nationalist, although losing the bridge, was able to withstand the counterassault and won by VP quite handily. Given that **all buildings on the maps score VP** at game end, the Republican should forego a passive defense in the first turns and make efforts to threaten the Nationalist village at the south end of the board. The BushmastersUnbalanced in favor of the defense. But a lot of fun to play the Japanese in defense. GOUREAU
Commando SchenkeI felt overwhelmed as Russian. I made poor setup decisions (Commissar outside the fortified building, a lot of squads in the first line of defense) and once overpowered, I prioritized keeping concealment and falling back. By the end of Turn 4, only a handful of Russian squads remain, and the Germans made their way easily in the building. No Russian units remained with a full turn to spare. mestravis
Danish CrossroadsScott was very aggressive with his ACs on Turn 1, and by the end of the turn I had knocked out two of them (including the far superior PSW 222). With lots of open ground to cover and little time I thought this game was all but over. So I didn't blame him when he scurried his remaining AC to cover and very cautiously approached on Turns 2-3. Meanwhile I just sat in my stone buildings with about 2/3 of my force yet concealed, as skulking was very difficult with these tiny starter kit buildings. Turn 4 saw him reach the doorstep of the first building, in the process losing a HS and breaking the MA of his newly arrived tank. Turn 5 he of course made a bolder push, in the process losing two squads to my crew and HS. But what baffled me a bit was him driving both vehicles into the center of town. This of course was just another possible way to win the scenario, as there was little chance of him uncovering my three squads stoutly guarding the fort, and credit to him for catching that (and even more sporting of him to point it out to me). His tank was useless with its broken gun, so his AC is what got all of my attention. When shooting failed, needing only a 9 or less to eliminate it in CC, I rolled a 12. Well done. This one plays very fast, which is nice for a quick sit-down session, but overall way too dicey. buser333
Bite of the Bassotto PeterA
Chateau de QuesnoyUnfortunately, Bruno's French defence was sub-optimal. This scenario allows the Germans to enter on turn one or later. I did a lot of scouting before the main body entered mostly on the German left. Ordnance smoke and OBA smoke helped protect the attack. He conceded in German turn nine. mtrodgers99
"...Things Are Hot!"I almost pulled off a win as the attacking Germans at this one, but not quite. I got 5 squads in the final building but a few broken and at one good order American squad managed to get upstairs, denying me the victory. Matt and I both had crazy dice, malfing numerous vehicles and SW. I got two critical hits (one on the Sherman Jumbo, the other on a Bazooka team behind a stone wall), without which I probably wouldn't have made it as far as I did. Germans need to have everything go right for them to get the fourth building, and my elite SS melted from American firepower at least a couple key times. Germans need another turn to pull of a win in this scenario, in my opinion. Agoldin

Lions of WesterplatteNot a fan of the naval artillery, which can't be used past the first row it can see. The Poles put up stiff resistance but the reinforcements came too late to be able to help out the units that were already engaged. Some unlucky breaks to their MGs and/or crew allowed the Germans to close the distance and take control. Jobbo_Fett
Mageret MixerPlenty of smoke and WP from my tanks at the start allowed my Americans to close with the Germans quickly. I had some good fire attacks with my vehicles and passed a few key morale checks of my own so that by the end of Turn 2 many of Jim's Germans were broken and hiding in stone buildings while I had gotten in the outskirts of the town. The Rally Phase of Turn 3 was critical and ended to Jim's advantage, as he managed to rally his DM squads and thereby double his effective fighting strength. I didn't get the self-rally I needed and it went downhill from there. A sniper Recalled my CE 105 Assault Gun. His Mk4 'woke up' surrounded by my bazooka-toting first line squads opened fire in his Prep fire phase and managed to break all three of them. Although by this point I was in two of the victory buildings my relatively low FP attacks failed to dislodge the couple of LMGs and his AT gun from the key position in the T1 building. Meanwhile my 6 morale attackers couldn't withstand his return fire and broke with every attack. I could see I wasn't going to get across the street against his firepower to my front and a Mk4 running around behind me, so I conceded. Agoldin

Good Night, Sweet PrinceAs the German, I was aggressive and lucky in getting across the field quickly, and I did so by turn three, but there I should have put on the brakes and moved more deliberately. Hill 621Started out fun but the overwhelming number of Russians really killed it in the end. Russians went heavy with human wave and were able to close the gap on the German line very quickly. Russians manages to prevent almost all OBA attacks. By turn 8 the Russians had taken all 5 locations of Hill 621 and had significant forces closing in on the few remaining Germans hunkered in on the other hill. The early human waves and loss of effective OBA really lost it for the Germans. feralhuntsman

Heavy Metal NoiseFirst scenario of HW26. Gary and Jim chose well for the first round. A classic Russian/German heavy metal, heavy weight slugfest. I'm now 0-3 lifetime vs Bret and with good reason, he's a great player. I made 2 critical errors. 1) I set my infantry to far forward of the gunline and they were unable to withdraw back to safety with a zillion 1/2 tracks buzzing around and 2) fire discipline, usually my strong suit. I killed 2 kings, 1 with an FB and the other with an ambush shot from an IS2.
The choices given the players are very important and will greatly influence the outcome of the battle, give it immense replay ability. Highly recommend.

Beyond the PakfrontsScenario Design seems off on this one. Basically 4 Germans STUG can reach the Russian backfield and then have 3 turns to hunt down the 6 Russians tanks that should easily find a parking spot in the Russian rear within the huge VC area. Tanks are double VC by SSR. The Russian and German Infantry are mostly irrelevant since that tank battle will decide everything. The 6 German SPW won't have any impact on that tank battle unless maybe they can hunt down the only Russian AT gun which MIGHT be able take out some STUG. nekengren

I felt that Maurizio really showed me how to counterattack despite the flame tanks etc
It started with a solid push and the AT guns being dispatch by the frontal atatck and a flank attack from behind but..
Maurizio took advantage of the weakness caused by a prolonged Melee and retook both guns and dispatched both tanks with inexperienced crews

That being said, it's an cool scenario that I'd play again. There are interesting choices for the Germans on set-up, and the Americans were forced into some tough tactical positions.

They have some awesome firepower, though, and it will quickly tell.

The Hedgehog of PiepskGermans setup all on board 3 and spread out near each VP with two squads covering the large building. Russians split into three forces, one for each board entry. Initially the Russian open seemed poor as the southern flank took longer to get into action and initial moves didn't afford an opportunity for human wave. While the was the case, The Russian eventually won a very hard fought battle, taking the last building (the large one) on the final turn in a close combat battle between heroes, leaders, and squads upstairs with Germans pinned down. The final German turn was unsuccessful in running a squad back into a building as they were pinned down during their dash to one. feralhuntsman
Pomeranian FuryAttack went well from the start as I was able to reach the north corner of the defensive wall in T1 and start to turn it to get behind. Germans pushed along aided by a hero who took out a T-34 in CC and then aided taking the large north building. 9-2 and 548 with FT worked down the building line clearing several buildings before the 9-2 went heroic and then was killed. Russian luck was below average throughout while the Germans seemed to just get what they needed from the dice. We both enjoyed this but a good defensive setup is key for the Russian as they are somewhat fixed for most of the game. nebel

More updates
The Publications page has had a minor face-lift and I've amended the scenario recommendations to exclude scenarios recommended that have the same name as scenarios you've already played before.
Site updates!
There's some updates to the scenario pages and the "My Page" that help find fun scenarios to play, based on other player's recommendations.

On the scenario page, you can see other scenarios that have been rated highly, based upon user ratings who have rated the initial scenario highly. (It's all a bit complex but it does try to quell the problem of good, popular scenarios outranking lesser played scenarios that might have a higher correlation).

On your "My Page" I've updated the games played and the publications owned tables to be a little more useful, and made an effort to speed up the rendering of the page, too. There's also a scenario recommender on there that takes into account scenarios that you have rated highly, and the input of other players - and checking that you haven't already played that scenario before (no promises on scenarios that have been released multiple times though, currently!)

Firstly, just visiting and using the site is great - thanks for being here. You can contribute in many ways, from simply entering data like logging your plays, or your collection - through to rating scenarios or writing reviews. The site does cost me about $100/month to host, which I've been happy to do for a number of years now, and will continue to do so. Don't worry - we're not going away! However, if you'd like to support further donations are welcome (and all donations go towards the costs of running the site) or you could become a Patreon supporter for all sorts of funky benefits! (More details on the Patreon page.)

Patreons and regular donators are signified with a checkmark
on some panels across the site.
