When day broke after the main Japanese attack, the Americans were not sure of either the Japanese penetration or their own casualties. By noon the situation had come into focus and counterattacks were ordered on parts of the hill. Leading the way to retake the captured positions were two platoons from F Company, 145th RCT. They knew this would not be easy and would take maximum effort.
