The Hedgehog of Piepsk	Germans setup all on board 3 and spread out near each VP with two squads covering the large building. Russians split into three forces, one for each board entry. Initially the Russian open seemed poor as the southern flank took longer to get into action and initial moves didn't afford an opportunity for human wave. While the was the case, The Russian eventually won a very hard fought battle, taking the last building (the large one) on the final turn in a close combat battle between heroes, leaders, and squads upstairs with Germans pinned down. The final German turn was unsuccessful in running a squad back into a building as they were pinned down during their dash to one.	feralhuntsman

Foreshadowing Ruin	175 Logs - as a VASL game a large one! The Germans were not too forward allowling them to loose little in teh first few turns and I choose the KV85 and SU152 reos A three pronged German attack allowed the division of Russian resources The German keep the heavy tanks back and shot at a distance- this reduced any signficant resitance points - the German infantry slowly moved forward and pushed in multiple spots to gain eventual advantage at two to three points spreading the Russian very thin across the line of resitance Only on last turn did he risk the charge and thus I had limited ability to stop all the VC attempts	macrobosanta

The Nut Lane Blockhouse	A brutal frontal assault by Marines supported by Shermans against Japanese in stone buildings. Progress was difficult until the Shermans forced their way into the buildings. It was costly with one destroyed and one immobilized tanks. But the infantry was able to move forward. The Japanese defenders were still active until the last turn with the Marines closing the distance and entering CC. In one of the buildings, a reduced Japanese crew ambushed the marines at 1:7 odds and killed them all. Japanese victory in this very nice scenario.	lt_steiner
Camp Nibeiwa	I used an Italian set-up from an AAR blog. The Italians primarily set-up on the southern hillocks. The Italian tanks charged the British infantry on turn one, after the Matildas all prep fired into the dust. Favorable DR resulted in quite a few broken British squads, but the Italian armor was all gone by turn 3. On turn 4 the wind increased to heavy, removing all smoke and vehicle dust. Even through the Italians were mostly shooting into the wind, the loss of vehicle dust gave the HMG several chances to go on a ROF spree, leaving 2 British leaders KIA and two others broken. The British were able to regroup eventually and move forward on board 29 using the wind as cover, and on board 28 using the front hillock as cover from the HMG and artillery pieces behind it. The weak northern defense was overcome first, as many Italian weapons succumbed to their low breakdown number. Around turn 7 the wind changed again, back to normal, and the vehicles were able to shield the advance on the hillocks. Thanks to the dust and entrenchments, most Italians had to be cleared out in CC, though 5 MMC were forced to surrender. The last CC ended on turn 9 while the tank leader went crazy and broke the last two units on a ROF tear of his own.	Guru Bob

Failure to Assimilate	The American attack was supported by mortar indirect fire and quickly a first critical hit killed a SS leader. A killer stack with all 666 and MMG forced the SS to duck and retreat allowing the US troops to advance and conquer some buildings. The panzers were a big threat but another CH from a mortar immobilized one for the rest of the battle. Despite the US troops dropping in quality by ELR, they keep coming back to fight. On the contrary, the previously killed SS leader would have been very helpful to rally the routed SS troops. The Americans achieved victory in the last turn with 17 building hexes controlled. The SS were able to capture two hexes back but that was not enough. A very tense scenario.	lt_steiner

Suxy Beasts	Outstanding scenario! German had net 1VP at the start of game's final (French) player turn. I was able to KO a PanPan that, while it went in motion last turn, failed it's radioless TC. My recently manhandled 37L KOed it for 3VP (crew survived). In my prior advance phase, a 248 advanced into a hex with an abandoned 25LL and recovered it in the final Rally phase. At game end, it it added 4CVP for a net 8VP win (40-32). This was a VERY tight, exciting game! Most recommended!	Houlie

Spartan Style	Typical Korean War scenario...charge and die unless the Greek player rolls poorly...9-2 with an HMG and an endless buffet or rate of fire and the ridiculous impulse movement of the Communist Chinese...just not my kind of fun ASL. I don't enjoy slaughter scenarios. This one is balanced though and both sides can win. But not my cup of tea.	grumblejones
The Curtain Goes Up	Ruweisat Ridge #1 – The Curtain Goes Up Fred and I decided to head for the desert, and we chose to try this scenario from a “historical” module. The comparison between the first version and the second version in my possession was merciless. Not only had the map been substantially changed, but the position of Ruweisat Ridge in relation to the entry areas of the opposing forces had been heavily altered, while scenario length and forces remained unchanged. On top of that, the SSRs in the version we played had also been massively revised. The level-2 hill which is the focus of the victory conditions, originally completely bare, had become a six-hex trench complex; and what had once been British air support had somehow turned into German air support. In short, the usual CH mess, with changes that completely distort what may well have been the intent of the original designer. In very broad terms, the scenario revolves around the Allied infantry, heavily entrenched around the crest of the Ridge, trying to hold their position. The Axis forces, on the other hand, must drive them off and, above all, exit 30 CVP from the board edge through which the British reinforcements enter. Both sides have OBA. My plan was to use OBA to smash the fortified position, bring the infantry forward to a safe distance, and unload them from their vehicles — meaning far enough away that the vehicles could not easily be knocked out by the Allies’ light anti-tank weapons. I had organized a group of four halftracks carrying enough infantry to satisfy the exit conditions, plus a six-AFV armored group built around the 75L guns of the Marder and the Pz IV F2. Their job was to keep the British tanks under control, while my smoke-capable tanks and the other Pz IIIs and PzIV supported the infantry assault. I also intended to use the two 75L guns mainly to smoke the hill in support of the infantry. Unfortunately, things did not go quite as planned. For the entire scenario I never managed to establish radio contact for my OBA. Even so, a coordinated AFV and infantry attack succeeded in taking the trench complex, and at a cost that was, all things considered, acceptable — more tanks than infantry. Unfortunately, the Allied 57L then went on an absurd run, maintaining ROF seven or eight times and managing to tear apart my AFV battle group over the course of just two turns, despite range, SMOKE and Vehicle Dust. That left the halftracks facing two Crusaders with only air support to help them. For three turns they performed a sort of death dance across the desert, and at times they even gave the impression that they might somehow pull it off. But on Turn 6 a lucky shot from one of the Crusaders destroyed a halftrack. At that point, not only would I have had to save the remaining three, but I would also have needed to exit a Pz III by running it in front of the guns of the Grants and Crusaders. That was close to impossible. Since I had no desire to keep playing merely in the hope of catching such a thin chance, I conceded. The desert is a peculiar ASL environment. It was Fred’s first time with it, while I was coming back to it after a fairly long break. We had fun, but certainly not thanks to CH, nor particularly thanks to the scenario itself, which proved far too static in the way it was designed. In practice, rather than really fighting for control of Ruweisat Ridge, the Allied player’s only real concern is blocking the Axis exit. The result is a scenario that is not especially enjoyable. Gavin Take	Attacker (at a beginner level) against a seasoned defender. The outcome was logical but the fun was quite high. Using a westerly route, Ostberg’s force came close to the bridge and to EE17, arising the hope to win the game but a good shot from the opponent wiped it out, but hey, at turn 6. The Gavin-Maloney force tried to support the advance of the other force, but it had to push through the Germans, which tended to concentrate. By doing this, the 10-3 leader got injured.	DOTT_68

Timoshenko's Attack	This was like playing three games at once. While the German side getting to split forces and set reinforcements was a nice touch, wasn't much of a fan with the boards not connecting. Russians struggled on the city board, taking several losses from well placed MGs. The open board found Russians rushing quickly causing Germans to reinforce early. Unfortunately VASL crapped out and game save was lost, wasn't up for a replay.	feralhuntsman

Assaulting Tés	Germans lost a ton of halftracks...but all the Soviet tanks were knocked out with all four Jagdpanthers roaming the battlefield. German 9-2 eliminated the Soviet 9-1, 4-5-8 w/50 CAL and after that the buildings began falling.	grumblejones
Sting 'em at Zingem	Looks of options for the Germans to enter. Germans had 2 Squads, MMG, LMG and 9-1 on the bridge side. The reinforcements split and came in as a quazi pincer attack.	slunts
Currie's Favor	My 10-2 went berserk on the second turn and of course took a squad with him. I managed to lay smoke in front of their 88 before the berserkers had to charge across the road to take their 81 MTR, but the mortar crew reduced the squad as they attacked. They eliminated the crew in CC, but then the 10-2 and HS were out of position. They did manage to get as couple shots off with the MTR, but captured use and inexperienced crew made the DRMs too much to stay there. It all came down to the final turn. I needed all 6 VC locations and took 5 easily, but needed to push him back out out of one without losing anyone myself as I was 1 away from the CVP cap. I assault moved a leader and squad next to the location where he just had a HS. If I make it into CC, I have a great chance at winning. But he manages to get an NMC on me and my squad rolls boxcars, casualty reducing and giving up the final CVP. Very fun finish to a fun game.	sushidog

West of the Merderet	A good well-balanced scenario. Ultimately, there are two battles which take place. 1) is for Hill 30 which can increase the number of American CVP which need to cross the river, and then 2) crossing the river. I had a fortunate Zerker who tied up some paratroopers on top of Hill 30 which eventually caused the death of a squad or two and a key leader... Additionally, my I had Germans with SW in DD12 and FF13 who never broke and adequately covered the terrain necessary to cross one of the two bridges over the Merderet. While the scenario ended with a Melee in progress (which was in progress for several turns) the Germans did enough damage on the left side and took enough hexes to make the last charge for the Americans to be extremely low percentage. I think there's a lot of balance with this scenario and could see this being close to even after 100 plays of equally skilled players. Log is from the last turn and half. (VASL Log)	CWO_19

Another Tiger would be immobilized by a side shot...but then two Tigers knocked out my last T-43. After four turns of pretty bad dice rolls on my side and 4 snakes and multiple threes by the Germans...I conceded. My chances of winning next to zero...especially as I got diced.	grumblejones

Combe Force	With no pre-requisite as to where the Italians must face in their setup, the initial turn can be summed up as mind games to see if you can trick your opponent into driving face first into your powerful artillery pieces. By the end of the Italian Turn 1, the British had lost 5 or so vehicles, with no real hope of achieving their goal of 4 destroyed/malfunctioned Guns. I'm sure that, with worse rolls on my part, the British thrust may have had more success, but honestly this scenario just feels at odds with itself, wanting the British to act quickly but not necessarily having any means to do so when faced with the Italian Guns and Vehicles, while the Italians simply need to survive and run away. First Dance	With 26 vehicles plus motorcycles this was the biggest armour scenario I had tackled to date. As the French I attempted to amass the 19 CVPs more than the Germans and amassed 17 to 0 before the German tanks arrived on turn 2. The arrival of these tanks resulted in all my on board armour being destroyed and ending any hope of the French fulfilling the automatic victory condition. The game was close Martin eventually winning 12-8.	alexashton@vinecc.org
Road to Prome	Classic PTO fare. As the Allied side, I opted to pull back rather than risk being overrun by a Japanese banzai charge on turn two. I don't know if this was the best plan but it worked out in the end a Japanese banzai on turn four near the exits failed to make much of a dent on the defenders aided in no small way by my opponent rolling three boxcars and an eleven in CC which led to a concession on turn four. Show a Little Guts!	One of the most fun scenarios I have played this year. Multiple Banzai's kept my Japanese moving forward and by the final turn would have 13 locations for the win...but a heavy price. Only 1 wounded leader left alive and only one full squad with three half-squads left. Bloody and fun scenario. Recommend it!!	grumblejones
Not Much of a Soldier	I entered my entire force on the southern board, as this looked the most lightly defended. His PSK squad guarding the road there gacked when he cowered, allowing one of my Shermans to roll through and behind him. When he broke and was eliminated for FTR it was the highlight of my turn, though my tank broke 2/3 of its MGs doing so. Unfortunately the rest of my plan went to shit when I pressed into the woods and stumbled upon some mines and the bore sighted mortar hex. Thankfully the mines were sniffed out by searchers before they could do any damage, but the mortar caught me in a stack move. A lost squad, two broken, a wounded 8-1, and a generated hero was the price. Needless to say I was a bit more cautious on Turn 2, and it was of little surprise when my other Sherman exposed more mines in 55AA1. Unfortunately it was via bypass, so no TB was laid. My men in the south, vanguard by the hero, were able to follow a clear trail presented to them by a retreating German, the crippled Sherman joining them. Turn 3 saw my central tank bog in the woods (despite using all its MPs), while the mortar severely limited my mobility in the area. Turn 4 saw my bogged tank immobilize and my other bog crossing some bocage. And when my play to take out the mortar saw only a HS survive while three squads and a 9-1 broke I had enough of this nonsense. Bocage is the best friend a competent defender can have. Paired with my poor dice, there just wasn't anywhere near enough time to recover. Not my favorite scenario.	buser333

And the Walls Come A-Tumblin' Down	I see I was beat to the punch in being the first to play and post, though when we had started I was shocked to see zero plays to date. I figured the bottom part of the map was included for a reason, and that reason was the basis for my dastardly defense. 100% of my force was set up south of the Intramuros. The bulk being as far west as I could muster, though my HIP units were set up further east as a sacrificial line of defense. During the RPh of Ami Turn 1 I broke almost all my infantry and routed back to the warehouse and woods, in preparation of rallying them and setting fire to them. When 100% of my force rallied, and three fires were lit, I couldn't have been happier. We did quickly realize that due to SF SSR only one kindle attempt was allowed and adjusted it. Either way, the bulk of my men were quickly ensconcing themselves in the Manila Hotel, while more than half the Ami force in the east were licking their wounds from the pasting my HIP boys dished out to them. Meanwhile it would take the other half of the Ami force 4 turns just to get into any type of threatening position. This scenario was looking to be a complete bust, and I wouldn't have blamed Scott one bit if he threw in the towel. But thankfully he pressed on, as it ended up being a fairly entertaining game when we played it to completion. Turn 2 saw the eastern Amis whittled down a squad as the Japs picked on their brokies, but they lost a MMG crew in return to some withering 0.50 HMG fire. A THH bungled a silver platter attack on a Sherman sitting next to them. Turn 3 saw the Amis in the north double-timing their way into position, the Amis in the east lose another HS, while the Japs there continued to get attrited, with three crews striping. Turn 4 saw the Amis lose another HS, while the Japs lost the other MMG crew and an AA gun blown to bits with a CH, but not before it knocked the treads off a Sherman. With the path looking relatively clear, Turn 5 saw the Shermans leave their fellow troops behind and move to the front. But the Japs still had a couple tricks up their sleeve in the form an LMG-toting HS and the other AA gun. The LMG promptly broke, but the well-positioned AA would not be so easily dealt with. Meanwhile the attack finally got underway in the west, with the Amis losing a squad to the Japs' HS. Turn 6 was quiet on the casualty count, with only an Ami HS lost; Turn 7 a bit more costly: 1.5 Ami/0.5 Jap. And so the last turn saw the full-on assault of the hotel with everything the Amis had left, which frankly wasn't a lot. As expected, it didn't go the Ami way, losing a squad to a HS for the Japs. And of course any Japs remaining at arms' length from any Amis broke and routed to avoid any further CC losses. Thus the final CVP count was 12-12, a much closer and entertaining game than I ever would've expected, but still probably a somewhat broken scenario.	buser333

The 138 of the 138th	Germans force concentrated the northwest corner. A russian fortified building placed right in the northwest corner proved challenging to approach as a placed DC couldn't do much. Luckily though, the russians feared the worst and called for OBA on the corner including their own building. Their blasts wrecked their own units as germans skirted around the blast area. A southern push up the middle quickly took out russians there with no german losses. AT gun jammed before landing a solid hit. At this point the germans could play the slow game having control of several buildings with only 1 HS loss.	feralhuntsman
In Pursuit of the French	I set up with the French in a way that wouldn't be game-y and ultimately paid the price. The French simply didn't have the ability to move fast enough through stone buildings and down roads in order to escape the closing grasp of the Germans who managed to take out several of the French tanks before they could get off-board. The French started off with some successful CC rolls but when a pair of them dragged on for several turns...	Jobbo_Fett
"...Things Are Hot!"	Looked decent for German's in first two turns. However, lost 2 x Panthers (one hull-down) in a single DFire phase to two APCR (TK22) turret hit shots (M4 had ROF) to take 16 CVP on top of ~8 already lost. Conceded in turn 4 after Germans missed again in CCs that would have given them 2/4 of the buildings needed.	Houlie

Over the Prosna	AT gun caught one of the AC's on the far side of the stream and the 81 mortar knocked a couple squads off the motor bikes. Put the Germans a bit behind schedule. Opponent went for the exit with a few squads so the reinforcing cavalry had to take posiition on the hill. Opponent resigned when my LMG took out his second AC. Fun scenario.	nebel

The Streets of Stalingrad	The opening shot of the game let to a fanatic and heroic 10-3 German leader and shortly after another fanatic assault engineer with him. German advances into the Tractor Works happened quickly, securing the factory fast enough to setup a defensive line within. Meanwhile in the west Russian assault squads struggled with their approach as they got peppered with sniper attacks and other fire crossing the road. Gradually the Russians began taking the other buildings in the west just in time for T34s to lend support. As German positions in the west began to collapse, Russia mounted a counterattack on the northern end of the Tractor Works and southern choke point. The northern push faltered and the southern one turned into a massive meat grinder, mostly due to supporting StuGs and a lone HS with a flamethrower torching the advancing Russians from an upstairs window. The Russians eased up on the northern push until reinforcements arrived from the fully secured west. Nearing game end and with only a 2-1 squad ratio, the Russians were looking at a possible loss as the Germans still very securely held the entire Tractor Works. A massive Human wave with supporting T-34s turned the tide as the Russians were able to overwhelm German defenses and led to securing all but one location in the Tractor Works by the final Russian turn. The German counter-attack only earned them 2 locations and another 2 locked in melee, not enough for victory.	feralhuntsman

Dying for Danzig	I drew the hard-pressed Germans in this one, a wild slugfest from turn 1! Lots of IF, HoB, desperate moves and PF shots that kept the outcome in doubt until turn 5. The Germans are outgunned, but dangerous with two PSK and lots of PF. I put the 88LL in BB9 where it could dominate the road through the middle of the strongpoint. It paid off as the crew survived two turns of CC then killed an ISU-122. My luck ran out when I fired PFs from inside Y4L2 in a desperate bid to fend off the OT-34. Jim: This was a ferocious fight! The Soviet force is powerful but small, so picking your risky moves is critical. The key to a Soviet win is "non-Encircled" in the VC. You don't have to kill or break all the Germans (just almost of them). Vic's 9-1 led kill stack in Y2L2 and a 467 skulking in CC8 almost saved him, but I managed to break the last hold-out for the win. This one went down to the last half turn, the sign of a very good scenario that's much more balanced than it looks.	dieneuner25
The Whirlwind	Americans gambled on a forward BAZ Ambush that paid off when the Germans stacked all units aggressively forward on setup. Turn 1 saw the BAZ take out the FlaKPz and a sniper activation from the small arms broke another German squad. The BAZ squad found itself quickly overrun and ended up captured and interrogated by the FlakPz crew, revealing the HIP of a nearby squad. The Germans then tried a northern approach and some intense street fighting began. One by one the American units were getting eliminated as Germans gained ground. It came down to an Alamo defense of the last remaining building in which the American squad was pinned and encircled. Close game considering the FlaKPz loss on turn one felt weighted towards Germans.	feralhuntsman

The Publications page has had a minor face-lift and I've amended the scenario recommendations to exclude scenarios recommended that have the same name as scenarios you've already played before.

Site updates!

There's some updates to the scenario pages and the "My Page" that help find fun scenarios to play, based on other player's recommendations.

On the scenario page, you can see other scenarios that have been rated highly, based upon user ratings who have rated the initial scenario highly. (It's all a bit complex but it does try to quell the problem of good, popular scenarios outranking lesser played scenarios that might have a higher correlation).

On your "My Page" I've updated the games played and the publications owned tables to be a little more useful, and made an effort to speed up the rendering of the page, too. There's also a scenario recommender on there that takes into account scenarios that you have rated highly, and the input of other players - and checking that you haven't already played that scenario before (no promises on scenarios that have been released multiple times though, currently!)
