One Spanish HeroFun scenario. Spanish ARTY did it's thing and broke up my Russians pretty good. I would MALF an MMG and my HMG at critical moments. The Spanish Hero was shot dead on Turn 4, but Dan would create another Hero that took the boys on it for a crushing defeat of the Russians and the capture of 5 full squads and all three bunkers. grumblejones

Go on to Kolpino!Fun scenario. Spanish OBA was the hero of the day. Never drew a Red Card and had the OBA on for the duration. Close Combat resulted in mutual destruction as the 9-2 and Squad with MMG was KIA'd along with the Russian 9-1 and MMG. By the end of Turn 5, the Spaniards had twice as many VP for the win. grumblejones
One Step ForwardMaurizio main attack came from the bottom of the board, where one of my AT Guns was set up. This AT Gun proceeded to get rate, kill tanks, go into close combat, win the CC, and go on to continue getting tanks. I don't think there was one fire phase when it didn't get rate, even when changing CA, and even continued to hit (even critting) while firing out of a SMOKE filled Location. I really diced my poor opponent, who took the dicing like a man (it's one of those things you have to do from time to time in ASL, unfortunately)! Even despite all that, he didn't lose his nerve and actually managed to mount an attack against the last VC Building despite losing ALL of his armor. Much RESPECT! Chuck
Suxy BeastsInteresting scenario that gives the Germans a couple of attack plans. Dan kept his AMR tanks hidden to avoid destruction, but without them the Germans were able to break the infantry and roll through the village. Rolled up a mild breeze on turn 3 which made the the smoke from the STUGs more effective. Would like to play this one again. dmareske
Opening the Burma RoadJohn and I continued playing through a few meaty ones with this beefy PTO scenario. I figured denying the Chinese any opening turn Human Waves or Dare Deaths was more advantageous to me than preventing concealment gain, so I set up back off the line. There was no stopping the eastern invaders, so I let them be so long as they didn't make for the footbridge. I heavily defended the east central road, as this was the easiest approach for the vehicles. The west central defense would be a game of delay, while the eastern units were just hoping to survive and hoof it out of there. John chose this route to bring on his vehicles, as all he'd have to do is punch through one hex of woods and have a pretty easy go of it. Of course this would be the area my tanks would be heading once their freedom of movement restrictions were lifted. I had a bit of bad luck in the west when one of my conscripts turned berserk and charged to his doom, otherwise the first turn was quiet. Turn 2 was even more quiet, as the name of my eastern defense was bend but don't snap, constantly keeping two hexes in between any attackers to deny them the possibility of initiating contact without losing concealment. I sent an HMG to deal with the eastern marauders, and manhandled my mortar to give them a little backing. In the west central our forces were content to have a Mexican standoff, with him in the western jungle and me in the eastern. In the west I moved to guard the footbridge, but my tiny force was going to be no match for his in the long run. Turn 3 saw my western conscripts lose a HS and another HS disrupt, and I was down to only two squads. Fortunately for me I could now move my southern reserves, and the tanks raced over to protect the VC area, while my men moved up to protect the jungle path. The contact elsewhere was limited or non-existent as John continued a slow, methodical grind forward. John was disappointed to have his air arrive already on Turn 4 as he would've rather had it timed in conjunction with the kickoff of any assault. They did of course somewhat limit my running around, but most of my men were concealed in in jungle so it was certainly manageable. He of course used them to go after my tanks, and managed to knock one out. But one of his planes was recalled on its first sighting TC. I had my own misfortune breaking the MA on one of my two remaining tanks. Next turn saw me lose it to a failed repair roll, but he lost his second plane to a failed TC again, neither of them able to even drop their napalm. I had just enough bodies, and the terrain was narrow enough, in the east to keep him at bay, and my west central force was in control of the paths. But my eastern force, though substantial, was being stretched thin and also about the be squeezed by the Chinese units which had hooked around from the south, and the ones which had bulled up through the central hill. Turn 6 finally saw a fair number of casualties, as my units in the east central were divided and squeezed relentlessly. By the end of the turn I had lost a crew and two squads, to 1.5 squads to him. Turn 7 finally saw him in control of the west, scaring my last tank into motion and subsequently fleeing the scene. In the west central he finally had pushed his way through the jungle to the tree line, but my force north of the stream was closing in fast to support the original defenders. The east saw him reach the bank of the stream, but I won the battle of FTs when I busted up a squad and his FT-toting leader. The casualties were rather sparse though, with him losing a squad and me a crew. Turn 8 proved to be the nail in the coffin. He finally activated a DD squad, only to see him unceremoniously mowed down by a conscript, and his hero-toting FT fizzled out in his attempt to clear me off the east bank. When my mortar went on a rate tear and completely enshrouded the other side of the stream with smoke, and then I broke his stoutly mortar squad he felt there'd be no way he'd ever be able to push across and clear the east bank. Overall, like the last one, I think I liked this scenario much more than John. But, like the last one, I think he was way too tentative in his attack. In this one ELR of two scared him off, perhaps rightfully so, but I really expected to see some more DDs and even a human wave or two. I've found most every ESG scenario I've played to be quite fun, and this one was no different. I really think, had John's luck gone a little better at a few key points, that this would've come down to a close finish. I'd gladly play it again from either side. buser333

By OurselvesThe Norway had taken 25 building locations, when a MMG snaking across the board found a space between buildings and rolled snakeyes to KIA an 8-0 leader and squad. Then next turn rolled a 3 in prep fire to break the 9-2 leader and squad with a MMG. The sniper was triggered and broke the firing squad to open up the middle of the board for the last turn. Then the 9-2 leader rolled a 12 self rally roll to die, taking the CVP total to 10 to give the Germans the win. Guru Bob

The Hero MaduroAn utterly terrible scenario. The Dutch have a decent firepower base that they can use to create a kill stack, and a Gun that gets to boresight before German setup - but... the long line of Green troops that need to push past a singular bridge and road hex makes smart placement by the Germans a veritable death trap for any advancing Dutch troops. In my game, the Dutch shots at the start reduced a German squad but forced the creation of a Hero, and they and the rest of the German force rolled well (with -2, -3, and -4 shots) to annihilate any troops trying to cross. Lack of LOS forced the Dutch to stay on the south side of the bridge, which only exacerbated the issue.

Skip this one unless you really want to practice your defence against a regular, expected assault.		 Jobbo_Fett

Vogt's RitterkreuzThe Dutch set up forward to try to prevent the Germans from crossing the open ground near the board edge. The Germans generally crept on, staying in the board edge woods mass. Two AC entered on the road and the other to the south. The lead car was immobilized and the crew bailed out and then broke. They were unable to rally and enter the AC again until after the battle was past. Both the other 2 AC were forced to be recalled later. The Dutch fell back as they could, and kept the Germans stalled in the large woods. That defense collapsed on turn 4. The Dutch got two missions out of their OBA. The first stopped the Germans from exiting the woods along the trail, and broke a couple of German squads. The second came down on the bridge as the Germans were starting to cross. The Germans were crossing the bridge because the Dutch started a lone squad next to the bridge. By turn 4, the squad had reached the wooden building on the far shore and was concealed. All of the crossing units were broken by the Artillery, but the Germans still had their MG's set up across the river with the 9-1 leader. They were able to break the concealment and then caused a HOB-surrender result, ending the game. Guru Bob

Under the Bloody BirchesFriday Fight Game (or early hours of the morning for Peter in New Zealand). As the Russians, this scenario was tailor made for human waves to get across the mudflats and brush in front of the starting Finnish defences and start to clear the hill before the cavalry arrived. For six turns, Finns and Russians fought at close quarters with the Finnish HMG churning out seemingly endless ROF. It was touch and go at the midway mark but the Russians eventually managed to seize undisputed control of the victory hexes on turn 6 for the win. Fun scenario against a great opponent. Before the BlunderI had the Germans versus Brett Poles as we continue taking turns attacking through Poland in Flames. Brett played a terrific game and kept me at bay for a couple turns with his HMG inside the pillbox on a level 1 hill. I spent a few turns getting back together after him breaking 5 squads. I finally made a big push in turn 5, getting some troops concealed on the hill above the village, some troops coming in unmolested from the south and some troops coming straight into the village from the west. On turn 6, I dropped a DC on one pole that was in a VC building, breaking him. I survived the rate tear from hell from one HMG with a single 5-4-8. I ended up getting the 5-4-8 into CC with a HS and leader, a 4-6-7 and 9-1 into CC with a 4-5-7. I needed to completely eliminate both in CC to win. I did not. Kudos to Brett, I brought everything at him but the kitchen sink. Great scenario, we both really enjoyed it. (VASL Log) tatumjonj

SW points buy is an interesting variable - Brits took MMG, LMG and PIAT to focus on delaying German infantry exit, since they can't win with the JgdPzrs alone, but lost the Sherman T3 and by end of T4 the left flank was cracked open and Brits conceded at start of final Turn 5. Good primer on gun duels and AFV tactics. RMod
Indeed!I tried to use an Allied set-up from a YouTube Let's Play. I chose to arrive on the O4 pier, whereas the video arrived on the H4 one, so I had to use the principles of their defense after that. The allies pushed forward aggressively on the defense, and kept the Germans bottled up and almost broke through from the north to have los on the pier. The Germans rallied aggressively and were able to hold on and press forward with the starting forces and use the follow-up troops to hold the flank. The kill stack in Z0 very effectively controlled the S4 street with a firelane for two turns, but the Germans were able to slip a couple of units across. A British squad in the R2 building became fanatic and held on until the game end. On the turn 6 the final Allied squads broke or were held up in CC, so that the Germans could pour towards the board edge on turn 7 for the win. Guru Bob

This proved tough for my Finns. The 2.5 squads setup on board can't do too much to slow the 12 Russian squads to prevent them reaching the base of the hill and outskirts of the small hamlet before the turn one reinforcements can come to the rescue. Bring up the GunsDutch set up along the road at the forward edge of the set-up area, with the lmg in the stone house in the middle. The Germans sent one platoon on each flank and the bulk of the force towards the middle. Dutch luck ran hot first as the leader on both flanks was killed, and several squads in the middle were broken, as well as burning one of the wagons. By turn 3 the Germans had amassed a line of troops across the road from the Dutch. First both flanks collapsed for the Dutch, then the middle in the following turn. The Germans had to make a run for it with the wagons and one more was destroyed. By turn 5 there were no unbroken Dutch units on the board. Turn saw the sole 7-0 Dutch leader rally and make a run for the wagons. He survived, but failed to make a kill in CC. He failed again in reaction CC, and the final two wagons had to survive galloping through a couple of grain hexes to get to join the lead wagon at the exit for the win. Guru Bob

Rite of PassageReally 2 actions for the Germans. Reinforcement Convoy on the left and Hold the Village with 4 squads on the right. VC are straight up with 3 bonus VC for a Fortified building. So given these VC, as soon as one shot hits that Convoy from that AT Gun up on the hill you should Unload and save the Vehicles or you lose the game. There really isn't enough time to reach the Village and rack up some VC. The Village Germans can hunker down in the Fortified Building and the Partisans have very little chance to break into it. No Partisan FG allowed and no weaponry. So overall Germans should probably win by just doing nothing. Not a very fun scenario. nekengren

Grebbeberg HeightsThis was the second time we played it and again, the Dutch won. I lost the first time as the German, and I noticed how tough it was to cover the whole Grebbeberg. So I placed 2 pillboxes overlooking the Northside of the Grebbeberg (the "Grebbe Mountain") with MMG's, as far to the west as I could. Same for 3 trenches. This worked, the moutain became my friend, since it took so much time for the Germans to plough through the forest and the smoke they dropped. PVeenstra
HühnersuppePlayed this as the Russian vs. Chuck Hammond, who is an entirely nice chap! Usually, can rarely play with US players due to the time differnce but for this one, it worked out.
I was looking forward to this scenario expecially because of the 537 Volksgrenadier Squads. A squad type which was definitively missing from the game - I say this as being someone who believes that we don't need yet more counters, however the German 537 Volksgrenadiers ARE an excellent addition!

In a 1944 setting, some Russians need to hold on to a handful of stone building hexes and/or exit some AFVs. The latter seems difficult, because initially, the Russians are not strong and it appears questionable if their two SU-76 would survive the dash to exit the playing area through hordes of PF and PSK toting Germans and no less than 4 StuG IIIL and a StuH 42 which have a 9-2 and a 9-1 Armor Leader to boot...

So I settled for a defence back in the village putting the 50mm MTR on the Russian left flank hoping to paste some German Volksgrenadiers who would have to cross an expanse of Open Ground. The ATR with a squad lurked in the fringes of the forest on the right in the hope of catching a StuG in the side an being a general nuisance. This left precious little for the village itself to hold on until the much needed reinforcements would arrive in Russian turn 3.

Chuck did a textbook advance, making good use of the StuGs' excellent SMOKE making capablities to cover the advance of his infantry. I felt as if the entire thing might be decided by turn 3 altogether with the Germans firmly lodged in the village. But there was my 50mm MTR from HELL!!! Keeping ROF, it contrived to break three Volksgrenadier 537 squads, two of them ELR'ing. Still, my first line of defence within the village seemed in a pinch and would have a hard time falling back. The conundrum seems to be that the Russians can't afford to forfeit the first line of Buildings in the village. But if they hole up there, they might die all to soon or be captured for Failure to Rout when forced to pull out. The Russian MTR having wreaked havoc took just enough steam out of the German attack to prevent my Russians from being brilliantly overrun. Yet, I had reluctantly to take some risky shots and Intensive Fire trying to hold some ground.

I was able to break more German Infantry, still out in the open, even helped by the Sniper, who took out one of the German 8-1 Leaders. One of the SU-76s was in a threatening position yet out of the crosshairs of the StuGs. For a short while, it appeared that it would now be the Germans to be bagged, because I was set to take pot shots at another three German squad equivalents in the open without cover. But luck evens out: After the rampage caused by my mortar, I broke the MA of the SU-76 set to fire at two HS out in the open. Next, I gacked a 8FP @ +0 Point Blank shot vs. a 537 with PSK next to a building I was holed up in. Never mind, I had a 76L MA of one of the reinforcing T-34s with a -1AQ for a 8 TH but missed. Shot the MGs of the tank at +0 DRM. No effect. IF'ed the MA, hit, but created a HoB result and a German Hero. Doh! Basically, where the MTR had broken three squads with a ROF tear in a previous turn, here I had missed pot shots at three German squads, which turned the scales back.

These unscathed Germans now took apart my first line of defence, the SU-76 was recalled to a Disabled MA after a 6 on repair, two Russian tanks and a 527 which I had entered on the Russian left flank could not break a German 237 HS over there, and three StuGs began milling around in the village.

To cut it short, the battle raged back and forth with the Russians appearing to crystallize again in the village once more at the cost of some rather audacious moves and the German HS at the left Russian flank could not find a PF to kill the ADJACENT Russian tank. Then it was time to pay for these moves, the Germans pushing on hard and the Russians gacking Point Black shots at Germans in the street. Another T-34 malfed its MA (and BMG), etc. pp. It was all a big brawl, with one T-34 breaking through into the German rear.

In the end, the Russians were somehow still hanging on but admittedly fighting at very long odds. Finally, the odds told and the Russians were forced to concede when one squad did not rally, which they would have needed (along with other things) to work out to still snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. It was not to be.

Great game with much drama and fate swinging back and forth several times. Also a great and very nice opponent.
It was fun to have the 537 Volksgrenadiers feature: As long as they are good order, they are powerful, but they break easily and are brittle if they cannot rely on TEM. In that way I felt that they played quite "historically".		 von Marwitz

Crossing ChaosThe Germans started out strongly with the armored cars getting across the bridge and attempting to secure the far side. Several times German MMC’s made it across, with help from MkIV SMOKE, but each time they were thrown back. Just as the French we about to break their reserves arrived. A viscous back and forth on the bridge with overruns and CC’s allowed the French to barely hold on. This was an excellent scenario! Tomkrny

WintergewitterWe flipped sides and played again, twice in one week. Again a very close battle, the Russian armor came in together on the west side and immediately knocked out a Mk IV, to be fair, the Mk IV malf'd his MA firing at the armor column. It looked like it was going to be a Russian rout, but between surviving crews disabling T-34s and my opponent's tenacity, there was still a German chance of victory in the last half turn. A great winter/January scenario, I would probably play it again. CWO_19

Bricks in FlamesAs the Germans I miss read the ability for the AT Guns could fire on turn 1.
At the end of turn 1 I was down 2 tanks. I was able to get two company's of squads and two tanks into the village facing the factory. I then Bogged one of my remaining tank going into a row-house across the road from the factory and my second tank fell into the basement of an other row-house hex. On the next movement my bogged tank became immobilized. Id did get 3 squads into the Factory but could not kick the British out. Besides these rolls the dice Gods felt that I need to be punished. I think the game is closer than it looks and with a little bit of luck it could be a close one.		 slunts
Polish PanzerjagersBy far the meatiest scenario we've played of our play through of PiF. I was defending with the Poles in the one. Honestly, a bit of a slog for the Germans. All the HIP Polish guns just rained down holy terror on the Germans. I think Brett realized that his mortars and OBA should have been used for smoke, instead he chased me around with it for 10 turns with little success. An easy Polish win in this one, the Germans barely got onto the victory boards at the end, let alone capturing level 3 hills. tatumjonj
Art NouveauOne Belgian squad was not enough to stop the Germans from flooding around the South flank of the pillbox. The Belgians KIA'd the first motorcycle scout to the north and set down a firelane, but the Germans concentrated in the south. They eliminated the pillbox position in CC on turn 2. The Belgian fell back from the north and re-positioned effectively, but the German fire was too accurate. One Belgian tank fell to the fighter and the other to CC. The roadblock was eliminated on turn 5, and the Germans exited on turn 6 with no Belgians remaining on the map. Guru Bob

The ReplacementsThe Russians were able to hold off the Italians. The Italians pushed through the trees with their tanks with only one bogging. They failed most of their MCs and thus were not able to gather enough firepower on the Russian stone buildings. The Russians had a couple of chances for MOLs but rolled too high on the results. Grebbe EndThe Germans opted to push the right flank and the road, and a hasty push by one of the armored cars (which failed an overrun) was promptly wrecked by an LMG hiding in the woods. On the attack, several CC attacks were made with varying results, but ultimately pushing the Dutch back to the buildings. Several squads were captured, and although the German line threatened to crumble thanks to great rolls and a berserk'ed squad, they missed out on a few critical rolls to seal the deal. Second WindInteresting scenario despite seems to favor the Russian. The German is going to be crushed and it seems the idea of the scenario is for the German to delay the Russian and do not allow a "strong repositioning" before the German reinforcements come in and attack to retake the buildings. Strong Morale for the German that sees all his set up defenders being vaporized by the Russian forces 27 MMCs vs 11 and 13 AFVs vs 3 entering on Turn 2 and 2 small guns (50L, 37L) at set up. The German conceded on the 4th Turn due to bad rolls and Soviets being already advanced, with only 1 MMC and the HMG to defend the center of the village. Maurizio.Grassi
Göring's MenThe Soviets set up poorly and were too scattered. They also suffered a persistent gun malfunction from turn 1 onwards. The Germans killed another gun in the middle of the game and managed to cut off a Soviet squad that had been placed too far from the main action. The German reinforcements delivered the final blow to the Soviets defending the village. Amerigus Crux
Defending Norwegian WoodDan's Germans struggled on Turn 1 in the woods and got pinned a couple times and then Close Combats went against them. The German mortar destroyed one of the guns when it hooked up. All three half-tracks bit the dust. The other gun defended itself and got back to back CRIT hits on the assaulting 9-1, which repulsed the final attack. The Norwegians ended the game with 2 squads, a crew, a half-squad and the 8-1 and 7-0 on Board 33 for the win. grumblejones

Tretten in FlamesGermans played against the set-up found in the British defense found in the log file below. The Belgian set-up was spread somewhat evenly over the village. The Germans attacked each piece in turn, concentrating much of their force against 2 or 3 British squads at a time. Guru Bob
Abrams' ChargeVery interesting scenario, but the CVP cap and large German guns makes this tough on the Americans.
American's pushed center-right, with a covering force to the left.

Early German MG fire from the steeple and then accurate OBA really hampered the American infantry. But progress was being made and by roughly the half-way point, it looked like either side could win.

On the American left, however, a Panther and JgPz IV moved to engage two Shermans. Between US OBA and Gyrostabilizers, this ended up being a two-player-turn crap shoot, and the German AFVs got the better dice. (Basically, both sides needed 4 or less on some shots.) At that point, the CVP damage was done, and the AFV advantage had swung to the Germans.

I think this might be a test for "Expert US Tanker" badge.		 ubertripp

Resistance at PaderbornThe kind of scenario we designed back in the Squad Leader days to use all the toys. It's a bit of a mess as a scenario. The historical part is not all detailed and likely lacking to a large extent. If you like fielding a Jagdtiger, Elefant and Brumbar in the same scenario, then you will love it. Otherwise it's a very busy scenario to play. My Americans managed to get the win by overwhelming the German infantry. My armor knocked out the STUG, both Pumas, and got a crit hit that destroyed the Elefant. The Brumbar and Jagdtiger took out my Chaffee, both Jacksons, my 105 Sherman, and my 75 Sherman. Enjoyable scenario, but again, it can be overwhelming to play with so much going on. grumblejones
Charging ChaumontWeather = Mud is the real party pooper for the Americans here: no smoke of any kind. This makes it a tough nut to crack. Beware that if the German chooses the Hetzer, you won't have any tank that can kill it with a frontal shot (except for a miracle CH). Action at BalberkampPlayed against Allied strategy found on internet. The Norwegians defended the forest road spread across board 5. Germans flanked both ends with a small force. The west side was held up by the HMG, but the main force and the flankers on the right broke through eventually. Three squads were able to fall back to the village. The British did not show up until turn 8, and the German flanking force arrived the next turn. The Germans and British arrived at the board 2 bottleneck at the same time, and the Germans came through on top due to better leadership, force and hilltop positioning. The INF gun but the cherry on top by pulling up on the eastern board 2 hill and got off a couple of shots. Two German berserkers sealed the deal; one in the chateau and the other at the crossroads. Storming KutrikAxis defenders on bd 85 withdrew to the 2x5 VP bldg areas with limited losses on either side. Seeing the Russian hordes, focused on taking out T34s to deny safe exit VC of one T34. 1 each by: THH / mtr immob. / DC / CC / CCRF immob., for a total of 5 of 7. The two remaining tanks failed their 6ML radioless TC (inexp. crew) in turn 5. This would allow the 3xPzIIIs turn 5 reinforcements w/ 2x(-1) ALs (and w/ A6) to cover the VC exit areas with side shots on the T34s (6AF) and the 150ART still concealed. Chuck had an absolute awful turn 5 when the 2 crews did not pass radioless TC and infantry prep fire couldn’t get a decent result. The failed TCs really hurt. Russians called off the attack. It was an interesting challenge for both sides, but the inexp. crews, once no longer in platoon, really hurt Russian chances. Houlie

Exceeding ExpectationsDan's Russians broke the MMG and that allowed the Romanians to swarm him. Near the end, the Romanians had taken a bunch of prisoners and only a 4-4-7 with the mortar. This dude had 7 shot rate of fire that KIA'd the 10-3 and 1-1/2 4-4-7's. It very nearly undid the Romanian attack at the very end. Game ended with a single 4-4-7 reduced to a 2-4-7 in the CC and held in MELEE and therefore not good order for a Romanian win. grumblejones

Through the Dragon's TeethTough game for the Americans. The AA Guns were just devastating at point blank range. Hand to Hand combats were bloody with everyone dying. Snipers took out the 9-2 and a Japanese 9-1. Japanese managed to hang on for the win. grumblejones

March Madness Korean War pack updated
The Encircled Productions guys have updated their pack to include errata to fix some issues with some scenarios (most of the errata is already on the site but I'm told there's a couple of small extra bits that are fixed, too).

Existing purchasers can simply re-download their pack to receive the updated version at no extra cost.
