Overview:

By the end of the first week of the Winter War, the Soviet 139th Rifle Division had driven the outnumbered Finnish defenders back almost 40 miles along the Tolvajarvi Road, threatening to create the first Russian breakthrough. Into the situation Field Marshal Mannerheim, without reserves to spare, sent Colonel Talvela, who managed to stabilize the front within a matter of days with aggressive patrolling in the trackless forests to stymie Russian flanking actions. Talvela then ordered a series of counterattacks. The plan for 12 December centered on retaking a large tourist hotel on the shores of Lake Tolvajarvi. But Major Malkamaaki's 2nd and 3rd Companies ran head-on into two battalions of the Russian 718th Rifle Regiment which was itself moving to outflank the Finnish positions.

2024-11-02(A) Jobbo Fett vs RootinPutin Finnish winAnother exit VP scenario (although with an optional CVP goal instead) where the outcome can almost entirely be decided on setup due to the Russians having to split their defense and the Finns having the advantage of movement, especially on the first couple of turns. Throw in better troops and you have an uphill battle that, I feel certain, must be skewed by players who did NOT know about the errata before playing and thus have misrepresented the fight that the Finns have in this one.

Regardless, it feels harsh to say that we've had few positive things to speak at length about when it comes to the Winter War. Perhaps other scenarios will get our attention and get us craving snow scenarios soon...
2023-09-29(A) Dwayne Duval vs Kevin DuvalA Russian win
2023-09-29(D) Kevin Duval vs Dwayne DuvalA Russian winAll came down to last Turn with Finns unable to rally the extra units needed for the Exit .
2023-04-15(D) Shane Pask vs Russian winLuckily I checked the errata before starting. The board layout as published looked really bad for the Russian set up. With the changes the scenario looks much better. However, the Finns were totally diced. The 9-1 was stuck in melee for several turns and could get no result despite a 2:1 advantage. They passed the CVP cap on turn 4 after they got no result from a 20+2 shot and my 2+2 return fire broke the 8-0 and 2 green squads who were then eliminated for failure to route.
2023-02-28(A) Steven Cummings vs Peter Palmer Russian win
