Overview:

Since June 2, 1942, the entrenched camp of Bir Hakiem, held by the 1st Brigade of the Free French, had been surrounded by the DAK. Further north, the 8th Army did not worry Rommel, who managed to maintain his communications and his supplies. However, the position of Bir Hakeim, at the command of General Koeig, poses a number of problems for him. He must in fact reduce it in order to guarantee his rear during his offensive in order to put an end to these irreducible Gauls. But the French resisted fiercely, and on the 8th, Rommel decided to launch Sonderverband 288, an elite unit trained for combat in the desert, against the Legionnaires of B.M.2, hoping to win the decision.
