Overview:

The German Sixth Army had rolled back the Soviet's 62nd Army since September 13 in an attempt to reach the Volga River. The German's 295th Division covered an area from Mamaev Kurgan to the Skulptury Park. The 295th's 518th Regiment followed up Banny Gully until they met Russian forces on the outskirts of the Red October Factory. On entering the downtown and factory sections of Stalingrad, the Germans found the Russians had fortified city blocks and buildings to fight from. Crossing a street became a major operation for the Germans. The fighting became so intense in the city the German troops called it VERDUN STALINGRAD: Fortress Stalingrad.
