Overview:
Commanded by General George S. Patton, the U.S. II Corps attacks against elements of the Italian Centauro Division along the roads leading to Gabes were becoming a concern to Army Group Afrika. A breakthrough there could potentially reach the coast and cutoff the retreat of the German/Italian 1st Panzer Army. To deal with this threat, the veteran 10th Panzer Division was released from reserve and would attack the U.S. 1st Infantry Division just east of El Guettar.
